NovaScotius
Hey, After getting my first Grey Hunter painted up, I'm not entirely satisfied with the colours I've used, so have resolved myself to paint lots of different variants until I settle on one I'm really happy with! I love the effect some people have achieved using Codex Grey as the base colour for the armour, and what I assume is Fortress Grey for the highlights. Now, I've spent a little while this evening layering Codex Grey onto the same patch of armour (thin coats!), and it's taking quite some time to get nice coverage. I'm doing this over a black undercoat, should I be using a white primer for this paint scheme? Any help would be gratefully appreciated. Wolf Guard Dan
When painting colors like grey most painters use black primer. white is generally for brighter colors. DV8
There are several options you can play around with, the most inexpensive of which is to find a nice decent medium tone primer (preferably grey :)). Krylon makes a nice grey primer that is somewhere in between Adeptus Battlegrey and Codex Grey, and is relatively inexpensive ($6 CDN for a can equivalent to GW's spray cans). The alternative is to use an airbrush (my preferred method) and spray-coat your models. Oh, I\'ve covered the red bases with codex grey, too. :P Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/195099-for-those-of-you-who-paint-your-armour-with-codex-grey/#findComment-2322199 Share on other sites
Barn
I'm actually planning on paiting up roughly 1500 points of models in around 3 weeks time using this painting guide Basically, its black base coat, heavy dry brush of Adeptus Battle Grey foundation paint , Badab black wash, lighter drybrush of Fortress Grey. Im going to try and see what that with maybe a last brushing of something with a tiny bit of blue in it would be. I dont like the current baby blue look myself, but i dont want my Space Wolves to look like Relectors :teehee: Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/195099-for-those-of-you-who-paint-your-armour-with-codex-grey/#findComment-2322244 Share on other sites

Demonslayer
Personly I am going for this http://www.mywargame.com/2009/12/03/painti...s-space-wolves/ Thats basically how I've done mine. Only done a test batch so far and I think some bright colour for detail will make them stand out better. spacewolflars
I use a black under coat for my codex grey Wolves. Though recently, I have started using the foundation gray color Which I then drybrush Codex gray and then follow with a lighter drybrush of fortress gray. Wispy
I don't have a problem getting codex gray coverage on black... I paint from the pot, though. NovaScotius
Thanks for the replies people! I like some of the guide people have been posting, it's a fantastic source of inspiration - Keep them coming! I'm still going ahead with painting a miniature with Codex Grey, it's actually quite therapeutic... but I can imagine that it could get pretty tiresome painting up multiple squads of models! I'm currently experimenting with doing the recesses with a really watered-down Adeptus Battlegrey, and highlighting the edge of the armour with Fortress Grey. Might give DV8's scheme a go... If I'm feeling particularly brave! Thanks  Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/195099-for-those-of-you-who-paint-your-armour-with-codex-grey/#findComment-2322894 Share on other sites
neonwolf
I'm also going for the true gray color on mine. I've almost got my 80 marines painted...only 18 Bolter Marines and 10 scouts left to go. I might try and take some pics this weekend and see if I can figure out how to post them. I've gotten a lot of compliments at my LGS for my paint scheme which is nice since this is the first time I've painted any models. I use the Krylon Gray Primer. About 1/5th the price of GW primer and it's gray. I tried the Armory gray primer on a few models but it was much lighter than I wanted. The krylon is closer to Codex Gray and the Armory is closer to Fortress Gray. The second step for me has been a heavy Badab Black wash. Then drybrush Fortress gray. After that it is just detail work which is mostly red/bronze and faces/fur. I've gone through about 3 pots of Badab Black painting up about 80 marines, and 2 cans of primer, but I think they are turning out great. NovaScotius
I keep hearing good things about Krylon, but alas, I live in the UK, and they don't seem to stock it over here :-( Does anyone know of a decent UK alternative, other than a pot of Codex Grey and lots of patience? ;) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/195099-for-those-of-you-who-paint-your-armour-with-codex-grey/#findComment-2323193 Share on other sites
Mjelnir
an airbrush maybe ? With 1/6th of a pot of codex gray you can paint almost an entire army and get incredibly smooth coverage Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/195099-for-those-of-you-who-paint-your-armour-with-codex-grey/#findComment-2323730 Share on other sites
ulrak
NovaScotius I use Hycote grey primer. It's pretty much codex grey in a can, has nice coverage and sprayed properly leaves a very thin coat of paint with no loss of detail. Should be available pretty much anywhere in the UK. HelbrechtsSword
Tamiya Grey Scale Primer is excellent. Prime. Then 2:1 Water:Codex Grey. Then Badab Black. Then Codex Grey Armour leaving shadows. Then Highlight Fortress Grey. I've taken a quick look into that, and it mostly looks like car primer? I used car primer once on a Imperial Guardsmen, and he died a horrific melty death! ;) Do you have the exact name of the one you use... I don't want to kill my Wolves! Tamiya Grey Scale Primer is excellent. Prime. Then 2:1 Water:Codex Grey. Then Badab Black. Then Codex Grey Armour leaving shadows. Then Highlight Fortress Grey. Sounds like that could be a serious contender, as it seems like a fairly quick scheme to paint, but will still look great. Do you have any photos of your models you could post? Thanks :) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/195099-for-those-of-you-who-paint-your-armour-with-codex-grey/#findComment-2323908 Share on other sites
ulrak
Hycote acrylic formulation grey primer the blurb on the back mentions covering plastic surfaces like bumpers and I've done several tanks and a few squads of plastic SW's with no ill effects. MadMonk
Here's a tip from a old wolf that got back in the hunt I use black primer and this spray paint from the http://www.thearmypainter.com/ the grey spray paint is great! Then I use painters tape to mask of the stuff I want to be black. Then do some high lights and I'm done enjoy! Hotspur
I like to use Tamiya paints (a byproduct of my days modeling airplanes), and I've found that the Tamiya Matte Black makes a great primer. I also use IJN Grey (Kure Arsenal) as the main color and then highlight with a lighter shade of Tamiya grey, but I've forgotten it's name. Personally, I like Tamiya paints better than their Citadel counterparts b/c I feel like I get better coverage out of them. Good luck!
