Brother_Kaelgrim
So I picked up A Thousand Sons and I'm enjoying it. While reading about the Avian warriors that they fight later on in the book, I suddenly had an image of Grey Knights, their armor tinged slightly blue and weathered by years of fighting, stuck on an world similar to the one they fight on in the book. What was really neat about the image was how cool they looked with feathered cloaks trailing bits of parchment from purity seals and the like. Sort of a take what you can get feel for the otherwise pristine GKs. So this look for the GKs...how would you guys go about it? My Gks already have fairly warm tones with gold and red interspersed with blue washed mithril silver. How would I go about getting feathered cloaks for them? I'm picking up an airbrush soon, perhaps I can do some very light snow effects? As to the background of it, plausible? Would the GKs forage when stuck on a world battling say a Lord of Change and taking the feathered hides of the local fauna to keep warm? jeffersonian000
On one of the Imperial Vehicle upgrade sprues (in the LR kit) there is a cluster of Purity Seals that is roughly cloak-sized for a Power Armoured model. I had thought about using it as a cloak for my GM. Your idea reminded me. Dilgar
I´ve painted my all Grey Knights with shining blue armour, looks pretty good (better in RL as always ) even if I say so myself. Otherwise they are still very much a "work in progress" :F. Just uploaded them from my phone (N86 shameless promo B)), just took em straight away as I read your post Kaelgrim, so maybe not the best light settings etc. The Yellow dog with the GKT was there so u guys can get some colour comparison. http://i256.photobucket.com/albums/hh164/0mnipotent/19032010886.jpg http://i256.photobucket.com/albums/hh164/0mnipotent/19032010885.jpg http://i256.photobucket.com/albums/hh164/0mnipotent/19032010884.jpg http://i256.photobucket.com/albums/hh164/0mnipotent/19032010883.jpg Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/195308-inspiration/#findComment-2325528 Share on other sites
Brother_Kaelgrim
Not too shabby. My GKs are a bit lighter in blue tinge as its Asurmen blue over Mithril Silver. As I'm picking up an airbrush soon, I'll be using Hawkeye's spray metals (they are very nice and have these neat polishing powders) and their website says you can add in a bit of color to tinge it. Might I ask how you got that rich blue without it overpowering the silver? Is it Asurmen over Boltgun? Dilgar
Not at all. It is quite simple. Black base, then drybrushed (with small amounts of Vallejo paints!) boltgun, letting quite alot of black still show through in holes etc. Then drybrushed even less (can´t see the text but think it is regular) silver on the areas that "stand out" the most. Letting the paint dry (da) after every step, I finally drop a few drops of (Azur?) blue wash in a palette, mixing with ~40% water to make it even less thick. With the blue wash I used extremly small amounts of it slowly adding more and more of it, making sure it doesn´t cover to much of the metal colours below it. I think the most important thing is to only use small amounts of the blue wash at a time, even using a dry pencil to wipe some access wash off from places where it has gathered to much, not that hard really (u can even first use a wet pencil to quickly make the blue wash "wet" again so u can dry it up if it has gathered somewhere. Hope this helps (I truly am a bad painter, and even worse to descripe how I do something ;) ).
