hail and well met brothers.

following a long series of defeats with my wolves if feeling a bit low in the moral department (to the point i was seriously considering abandoning the sons of Russ). I know why ive not been doing so well but it is demoralizing having so many defeats all in a row.

also i have been suffering from a severe lack of inspiration as of late.

So i ask you brothers, do you have any good inspirational movies i could watch, or books i could read, of just even a few kind words to cheer me up.

any comments would be greatly appreciated :)

If you know why you're not doing so well, can you not change it ? Post here why you think you're on a bad run, and also your army list, and I'm sure you won't have a shortage of people willing to help you out

I recommend listening to "Swords in the Wind", "Dawn of Battle" or "Sons of Odin" by a band called Manowar... in fact, many of their more recent songs are pretty good for inspiration, as they're largely based around Norse mythology. Makes good painting music too!

As for your series of losses, I'm sure that if you were to post up the list you're using, and roughly what some of your regular opponents take, many of us would be happy to help you out.

When I used to play Deathwing (Before they were crushed when I moved house :) ), I found that my army list got very stale very quickly due to my lack of variety. I went through the same crisis of faith that you did, looking at other armies and thinking that the grass was always greener on the other side. My problem was that I was just fielding Terminators and a Land Raider... I didn't like anything else in the Dark Angels Codex (To be honest, there really isn't a lot to like!), but I made myself go out and get some Ravenwing Bikes. It was like I was playing a completely new army, I was forced to relearn my tactics, and try something new. Ok, I did lose the first couple of games after putting them in, but I was so excited to be playing something different, I didn't care.

So before you throw in the towel with the Wolves, try mixing it up - If you take lots of Grey Hunters, try some Blood Claws. If you've got no Fast Attack, try some Swift-Claws or Storm-Claws... If you've got no Wolves, try getting some Fenrisians in there, or even some Thunder Wolves. Perhaps try something like adding Drop Pods instead of Rhinos (or vice versa), or even get rid of all your vehicles completely. The important thing is to do something different with your list.

If you're close friends with your regular opponents, it might be worth voicing some concerns - Tell them that you're not happy with your list, and that you want to experiment with some new styles; they might want to do the same thing! Everyone gets bored playing the same list week-in-week-out, so by adding a little variety, you give yourself some flexibility, as well as make the game far more enjoyable.

Anyway, my couple of thoughts appears to have turned into a mini-essay. I'll get off my soap box now!

@Spacefrisian - yes the wolves are my only army. Ive tried to branch out to different ones but none of them have really captivated my imagination fluff wize, and i feel that that is important in an army. I tried to start a Guard army but lost interest (even when i tried to apply my own fluff to it) and as a resuls i have some converted ogryns and a half built Vendetta on my workbench.

@Bartali - the reason why im going wrong is because i am experimenting with different units (ones that ive never fielded before). I diddnt expect to do well as i had never used some of them before but diddnt expect to loose as badly as i did.

the lists are in question have been black listed (when i say blacklisted i mean burnt, torn up stricken from record, i suffer from extreme gamer rage) so i cant put up what i was using.

also another reson i keep loosing is probably because most of the people in my local GW are powergaming whelps and i am a fluff gamer.

like i said i diddnt expect it to go well but is just gets on top of you you know?

Try your trusted list but just ad 1 new item and not a whole new list.

But most i would say, find fun players to fight against. I only game a few times a year so i know ill lose most of the time, but i just love the game and dont care about winning.

@NovaScotius - hmmmm a complete re invention of tactics and list style might be the thing to go i do use alot of rhinos, so i might start using drop pods. also i never intended on throwing in the towel, that is not the Space Wolf way! lol everyone calls me "Space Wolf Paul" at my local GW and i dont think anything else would go

"Ork Paul" no

"Tyranid Paul" no

"Tau Paul" that sounds really weird so no

i have and always shall be a Space Wolf!

im feeling a bit better getting this out in the open brothers

@ Max_Dammit - i also like your idea of changing one thing from my last winning list and seeing how it goes.

I find that reading the books gets me in the mood to paint. It doesn't really matter on what book it is for me, but you might want to try that new Horus Hersey Book. The pseudo McNeil book that was actually written by Abnett the Great called A Thousand Sons.

Glad to hear it! Now grab an ale while we figure out where you should go from here! :)

Whether you do a little reinvention of your list, or a complete rebuild is up to you; but I found that even by changing one unit, the dynamic of the army changed, and became something entirely new.

Also, Max_Dammit spot on with what he's said - You need decent opponents who are willing to push the boat out and try something new - Power gamer opponents are cool to play occasionally (Gives you a chance to really test how hard you can play!), but they're rubbish if you play them all the time. You mentioned that you're playing in-store a lot... are there any local clubs you could start attending which are based outside of a store? If they're an evening group, you tend to find that many gamers are more mature (That's not a pop at people who play in stores), and generally more relaxed - People go out of an evening to have fun, they're not there because wife/girlfriend/mum is out shopping on a Saturday morning, and they've nothing better to do.

I didn't think there were any clubs in my area until I spent ten minutes searching, then I found four. The largest of which books out a function room at a local pub on a weekly basis - Sure, you pay a couple of pounds in subs to turn up each week, but there are so many people there, you could play a new person every week for a year and not run out of people!

So yeah, mix up the list and mix up the opponents... but most importantly, have fun! ;)

sorry about the late reply gents

heres my list that i last won a game with

HQ

Wolf priest Degar Stormheart ( wolf priest, Jump pack, Plasma pistol, saga of the warrior born) [goes with skyclaws]

TROOPS

9 grey hunters + banner + rhino

9 grey hunters + banner + rhino

9 grey hunters + banner + rhino

HEAVY SUPPORT

6 Longfangs (pack leader and 5 lascannons)

6 longfangs (pack leader and 5 missile launchers)

Whirlwind

ELITES

Wolf Guard (TDA Cyclone missle launcher) [ this guy goes with the missile launchers]

Wolf Guard (stock) [goes with grey hunters]

Wolf Guard (stock) [goes with grey hunters]

Wolf Guard (stock) [goes with grey hunters]

Wolf Guard (stock) [goes with grey hunters]

FAST ATTACK

9 Skyclaws

well thats my old list that i used to roll with any comments?

Split the lascannons and Missile launchers between both squads, itll keep them alive longer.

Your GHs could do with some upgrades, Id drop the skyclaws to get this rolling. Id also drop the WG if your not going to give them any upgrades.

While having to many toys reduces your model count to drasticly and ends up with a negative effect youve simply gone to far the other direction... not enough toys to make the most of what you have.

Example- by dropping the WG squad you net yourself 135pts. Buying back 3 GHs puts you at 90, giving to GH squad PRs and PWs will take another 50, A PF on the Skyclaws puts you at 15, and a Set of Meltaguns on the third GH pack puts you at 10. Dropping one LC LF lets you give all your GHs PFs instead of PWs, and increases their CC potential 5 fold. The addition of firepower to them means that theyll be more of targets- and your Long Fangs less so.

For movies? I reccommend 13nth warrior, quite good.

hmmm id rather not loose the wolfguard squad as the cyclone goes very well with my missile longfangs (7 krak missiles a turn is too tempting, and is polishes things like avatars off quite quickly). Also ive had more effectiveness out of keeping all the weapons the same in those squads.

i was thinking maybe drop the whirlwind (as i have plenty of fire power already and the large blast is only realy good against low toughness stuff) and beef up the grey hunter squads with the 85 points from that?

However that works, but you need to get them some upgrades... a small amount of points can rapidly increase the effectiveness of a unit if spent well. 70pts is all youd need to give each GH squad a Plasmarifle or Meltagun, and each squad a powerweapon.

A sad day for any Chaplain who sees a Brother marines morale broken. Even if you aren't an Ultramarine I'm here to support my Brothers no matter the circumstance.

Brother Stand fast in the face of annihilation! Remember your vows, the Emperor protects the strong in faith.

Now fall back in formation before I have you summoned before your captain!

Teeth of Russ, what's the pretty boy doing here?

Brother, pay him no heed. I'm facing a little loss of insparation as well so maybe the exchange helps both sides.

We're moving for the 2nd time in under a year now, my wife and daughter. At the moment I'm short of variety in my Lists because there's a lot already packed etc., I'm even shorter on time for gaming and painting etc. and honestly feel bad about that. I have great plans, but no time whatsoever. Long story short:

I went out three days ago and got myself "A Thousand Sons" and I read about Leman Russ in the flesh, eyes wide.

Now that was inspiration for me, I own a recently assembled, primed and painted Landspeeder I first used in a game yesterday that can proof that fact ;) .

Reading about our beloved primarch made it for me, I can only tell you to try the same, after all we're both Sons of Fenris.

And may I suggest a good barbecue with lots of beer :D , always a good treating from what I know.

;) Like a Space Wolf needs to be reminded of the All Father, ha, have some ale though i doubt an pretty boy could stomach it :(

Well said Bulweih, have an ale on me! (ps loving the name)

@Acidburn, Grey mage was spot on withe the movie, if you need a second try 300

@Acidburn, Grey mage was spot on withe the movie, if you need a second try 300

Am I the only one who saw that movie at one point and said "oh look, the story of ragnar blackmane" when the opening hunting scene rolled.

Exact thought that went through my mind

sadly i didnt start my Wolves until after i saw the film but now you mention it, hell yeah, aaoo aaoo aaoo B)

You werent the only one to say that i said the exact same thing.

If its fluff you seek in an army than i doubt youll find anything more Glorious and Expanded as the Spacewolves. What about Sisters of battle made in the same Colours as Spacewolves. Might not be the same but it does give a different playstyle and could make a nice combo with youre SW army.

Or give Dark Eldar a try, helped me.

Well if you are testing things out you should be OK with losing. Every loss is a learning point. All those learning points should lead to more victories as you gather your knowledge. This is the tiem to also have fun. You know you are going to lose because your testing different elements.

Aside from that, if you love the fluff, then re-read the dex and previous fluff books. Or count them as another SM army to see if the grass is greener or brown(I suspect you'll find it is brown :) )

not to try and seem as a one upper, but you should see my IG win-to-lose ratio...... lets just say that after about 6 years of have IG i am still pushing to get a good list going, once i had one the new dex came out and my old list didn't quite work the way it used to.
