Just an update on a wolf lord I'm painting at the moment:

He broke!

Yeah, I agree with you. He goes with a squad of termies, and all of them have bare heads...so for him, a helmet. It looks better in context.

More progress:

As it happens, I'm kinda using this guy as a test bed. I did the lightning claws that way because I'm going to be doing some Blood Angles with that technique, and his shoulder pad may look a little bit mexican inspired. Indeed it is. I was at the british museum earlier this month and saw the Mayan/Aztec (I forget which) death mask they had. Its a torquoise mosaic, very iconic. It kinda got me inspired to do a Space Marine/Unit with a pre-european central american archeotype. Just trying out some colors here.

Cainthehunter: Thanks! I'm sure you could with practice. I've been doing this for a good ten years now!

Bane of Angels, I'm glad that you like the helmet. I was thinking that as well. I've never really seen a helmeted HQ except for chaplains.

Strike Captain, I can give you the recipe right now, along with some theory, and I can give a step by step when I get to painting his squad.

The green is:

50/50 Hawk Turq/Regal Blue

Shaded by adding a bit of regal blue,

shaded by adding just a touch of black to the above

Then I go back to the original mix, and add some scorpion green, and do a highlight

then a little bit more scorpion green

Finally, I add a bit of skull white to the above, and do a line highlight on the edge,

before adding the pure white dot.

http://i85.photobucket.com/albums/k63/OliverTwist_01/IMG_3393.jpg

That picture shows my own personal way of painting.

The big blob is the base coat, this can be any color or mix of colors.

The dark blue is an accent shade,

The black is the 'low light' color

The bright green is an accent highlight

And the white is the highlight color.

I will 9 times out of ten begin with a basecoat that is a middle color. From that, I will start by shading it down with the accent shade and adding lowlights. I will then complete the shading by adding the "low light color" and shading the very darkest part.

Then I go back to the base coat and slowly add in the accent highlight, then the highlight color. Slow, thin layers to get to where I'm going. I'll work on a specific tutorial as soon as I can.

I am using a wet palate. Its my secret weapon.

I made it using a normal plate, some kitchen sponges. Any kind will work. If you do get one with a scraper side, put that to the bottom. Soak it good and wet, almost to the point that there is extra water at the bottom. Then cut of an appropriate sized piece of parchment paper (of the baking sort) and put it down on top. The water should adhere it to the sponge and then keep your paints wet for a long while. I'm honestly not sure if it matters which side of the parchment paper you use. Then just put your paints on top.

It could help to put it in a resealable tupperware dish. That should keep your paints wet for a good while. Using a wet palate really helps with blending. I'll get a picture to show you how as soon as I'm able.

*edit* and thanks Ludovic!

Mikhail, what I've got now is a jem tutorial...its okay. I mean these jems weren't the best in the whole world to do a tutorial on. When I get something better to paint with blending, I can certainly do a tutorial for you. I don't know if I have the equipment to do a video tutorial, but I can try my best.

So...jems:

Start with this:

http://i85.photobucket.com/albums/k63/OliverTwist_01/IMG_3415.jpg

From top left to right: Chaos Black, Midnight blue (i know it looks purple) red gore, blazing orange, bronzed flesh, and skull white.

1st: Paint everything black:

http://i85.photobucket.com/albums/k63/OliverTwist_01/IMG_3417.jpg

http://i85.photobucket.com/albums/k63/OliverTwist_01/IMG_3418.jpg

Then mix some red gore and blazing orange to make a base color mid tone:

http://i85.photobucket.com/albums/k63/OliverTwist_01/IMG_3420.jpg

And paint:

http://i85.photobucket.com/albums/k63/OliverTwist_01/IMG_3421.jpg

Notice above that I only painted opposite sides of the diamond jewels. This is just something I do on jewel cut jems like that. Round things are different.

http://i85.photobucket.com/albums/k63/OliverTwist_01/IMG_3425.jpg

Then, mix in a little blue with the main color to get a shade:

http://i85.photobucket.com/albums/k63/OliverTwist_01/IMG_3427.jpg

And shade the jems:

http://i85.photobucket.com/albums/k63/OliverTwist_01/IMG_3432.jpg

http://i85.photobucket.com/albums/k63/OliverTwist_01/IMG_3428.jpg

Then go back to the base coat. Don't add highlight color to the shade color, or you'll not end up with the right color! So add some orange to the original red mix:

http://i85.photobucket.com/albums/k63/OliverTwist_01/IMG_3434.jpg

And highlight, towards the tips of the jewels, middle of the eyes and top right of the round lenses:

http://i85.photobucket.com/albums/k63/OliverTwist_01/IMG_3436.jpg

http://i85.photobucket.com/albums/k63/OliverTwist_01/IMG_3438.jpg

Then add some white to the latest mix

http://i85.photobucket.com/albums/k63/OliverTwist_01/IMG_3439.jpg

The above picture shows how great wet palates are for blending. They really allow you to gently mix the colors on the palate, and maintain each step. It really works for a gradual progression of color.

So highlight the very tip of everything:

http://i85.photobucket.com/albums/k63/OliverTwist_01/IMG_3441.jpg

Then put a tiny white dot in the opposite corner of the highlights, or in the center for the eyes:

http://i85.photobucket.com/albums/k63/OliverTwist_01/IMG_3447.jpg

http://i85.photobucket.com/albums/k63/OliverTwist_01/IMG_3451.jpg

Now usually I would paint the eyes just like round, elongated round jems, like the two on his back. The reason I didn't is because I was going for this effect:

http://i85.photobucket.com/albums/k63/OliverTwist_01/IMG_3453.jpg

http://i85.photobucket.com/albums/k63/OliverTwist_01/IMG_3456.jpg

http://i85.photobucket.com/albums/k63/OliverTwist_01/IMG_3457.jpg

Which was achieved by watering down red gore until it was nearly all water and adding a few very thin layers around the eyes. With the highlight in the middle, it looks like the eyes are making light, not reflecting light in a colored lense. To be consistent, I also did some OSL on the back:

looks pretty good at the moment, the battle damage and lighting effects on his eyes are superb! the only problem i have is the light reflection. the lines are incredibly bold and maybe if you used more layers and thinner paints you would be able to achieve a thinner, more realistic blending for your gems etc.

other than that crit, it's looking brilliant!

Thank you Deffwolf. I know what you mean. This isn't quite my best work, and I keep my paints far thinner when I'm "going for gold" so to speak. Thanks though

Primarch: I used Mig Brown Wash thinned with Mig Wash Thinner. Easiest thing I ever did.

Thanks OT, will be looking back at this when I come to doing the gems on my marines!

Edit: note to self: must try making one of those wet palette thingys

Edit again  : Meant to say, Wolf lord is looking brill too!

He looks amazing!

Gotta praise you for using a helmet.

Terminator helmets look great and everyone and his grandma uses the bare heads for their Space Wolves.

About the gray armor which I really like.

I looks kinda airbrushed, is that correct?

What's the color you used?

Keep it up! // Andreas
