BA WIP: Returning to the hobby

So, I thought I was done. Until a friend come around with talk of a new edition, the game shifting more towards shooting and and an unstoppable Dark Angels codex. The gauntlet was thrown down.

"Just when I thought I was out... they pull me back in!" My wife is thrilled. whistlingW.gif

The first thing I did was kit bash a new Librarian after reading the new psychic powers, I had to have one! I magnetized his force staff so I could swap on a power force axe head instead if need be. I may end up buying a different Librarian in the future (FW Sevrin mini is fantastic! ermm.gif ), but he was still a fun build. I still need to decide on what his banner will look like and he needs a new base.

Next up, I finally based my kit bash Chaplain from three years back. If I end up using a Death Company, I think he'll fit in. My original plan was to cut the metal bits of the axe head away, leaving the very Crozius Arcanum shaped end, but ended up liking the axe, which was really no big deal in 5th. Now that a Crozius and power axe are vastly different animals, I suppose I should get trimming.

I also finished another Sanguinary Priest. This poor guy sat halfway done for years, I hope he's happy. Since he is in a much more dynamic pose than my other SP, I magnetized his backpack so I could put on a jump pack and stick him with an assault squad in the future.

I reclaimed a bunch of old minis from my mom's place and decided to salvage them instead of rebuying the ever increasingly expensive GW kits. 5 tanks were broken down and sent for a bath in Simple Green. AV14 is no match!

This led to the reconstruction of one of my first tanks, the Baal Predator! I actually had an unused Annihilator kit stashed in a box, so I used the chassis to make the Baal. The metal bits were badly warped and didn't fit against the plastic kit well, I had to use a lot of green stuff to gap fill, hopefully it will look okay. I have several of the old ablative armor kits that I'll use to bulk this guy up so he won't be dwarfed by modern tank kits. I hope to make some progress on painting him before my Pathfinder game tonight!

Lastly, an image of the ending of my first 6th edition game! The Blood Angels did well against their dark brothers. This pic is the aftermath of my Death Company, 2 ASM squads, Librarian and Corbs tearing into 2 DA Tactical Squads and Command Squad with Ezekiel. The green bases are stand-ins from my old Blood Angels army 10-15 years ago. Ol 'zeke was the last man standing and got nuked by an Infernus Pistol under the guidance of my Librarian's Prescience powers! Zap! biggrin.png

C&C is always welcome, thanks for reading!

Really nice painting there, mate! I love the DIY-Chaplain, he's looking ace! The Librarian's paintjob is just awesome, some very strong and blazing colours paired with excellent highlighting. Top-notch work! thumbsup.gif

Great job on defeating the trai- erm I mean the most loyal Chapter in the Imperium! What are your impressions of 6th edition?

Keep it up!

Snorri

@Snorri:  Thanks for the feedback!  6th edition has been better for me than I initially thought after skimming through the rules.  Overwatch had me worried but after two games it has yet to have much effect.  Hull points have worked out in my favor as my new Baal absolutely murdered some Landspeeders last game, 1 squadron with MM and 2 Typhoons iirc.  My usual opponent's list is looking like it will include more and more Terminators, which were a problem last game since my list has few ways of dealing with them currently.  Overall, I'm just happy that the new book got me playing again, it's been fun.

Here's the new Baal, 90% completed.  I intend to add weathering and battle damage, but I never really learned how to do it so I have been procrastinating.  I'll try to get a better lit image in the future when it is truly finished, it's really hard to see any highlighting at all in this pic.

If you haven't already trimmed the bits from the Axe head on the Chaplain you could just count it as a chaplain with a powerfist and make sure your opponents understand it at the beginning of the game.  Large 2 handed crozius with bladed head to me could justify the "powerfist" strength increase and AP boost from a normal maul.

I've been spending a lot more time playing 40k lately than painting my minis, but loving every minute of it!  My Baal is finished, as is another retro tank - introducing my salvaged las/plas Razorback!

I still had two old Rhino hulls and miscellaneous parts left over, so I got to work on building a Predator.  I wanted to do an autocannon + las sponsons, but had to borrow the autocannon from some generous Imperials.  I was also out of the spaced armor strips so I cut some out of plasticard for the sake of unity (and to hide some grisly scarring!).  Here it is with the rest of my armor:

I have only lost one game so far, 1,000 points against IG infantry.  The game ended on turn 6 but I would have been tabled the next turn.  I handed it back to them properly at 2,000 points however!  The last turn saw my final, power sword equipped, DC marine make contact with a late arriving Kasrkin squad and their Valkyrie.  He shrugged off the fire, even making a Feel No Pain save before lobbing a grenade at them and charging.  Their Hellguns hadn't the accuracy to halt his furious advance and he cut them all down moments later!

I need to finish up these old models so I can get to buying some new stuff.  I feel like I want to stick to a mech list still but am uncertain of the composition.  My thinking, as of last night, was something like this for 2,000:

Librarian

Furioso w/Frag Cannon + Magna-Grapple in Drop Pod x2

5 ASM w/Meltagun + Powerfist in Las/Plas Razorback x4

Baal Predator x3

Predator w/Autocannon + Lascannon sponsons x3

We tend not to like fliers much, preferring ground troops, so I am not planning for any of that in my list.  I feel like more troops are needed and I would probably end up dropping a tank or dread for tacticals or maybe scouts to hold a backfield objective.  Unfortunately, my wallet, desire to build and paint and desire to perform well on the battlefield rarely all coincide!

Following my trend of long periods of neglect between posts, I have some new Blood Angels to show! I have spent a lot of time painting things that would not belong on this forum (of the 41st millenium at all! whistlingW.gif ), but it's always a joy to return to my beloved red marines every once in a while. Unfortunately, my Beerhammer buddy has moved across the country for a few years, pursuing higher education so... maybe... I'll have to go meet some new local players. I feel too old to make new friends, darn it!

Here is my newest addition, a complete reworking of my first ever Dreadnaught!

http://i59.photobucket.com/albums/g315/skyseemstragic/IMG_2024.jpg

He's based on the old metal Dread, which I probably picked up around '97. While stripping the old paint job, I got to see bits of his history long painted over. Previously, he was set up with the Dreadnought CCWs out of the first Furioso box. Before that, he was set up similarly but with a converted right arm Dreadnought CCW (before one was offered officially) and both hands featuring the claw bit from the old Space Wolf Bjorn the Fel Handed kit. And even before that he was a standard BA kit multimelta/CCW guy. I felt he deserved a thorough cleaning and breath of fresh life after such a long and proud service. The frag cannon is obviously imported from our new kit and the banner was snatched from the Sanguinary Guard kit and is magnetized on for easier transport. The base is some thin corkboard and bits!

Here's a group shot of everything I have done in the, uh, years since I returned to 40k. Not much accomplished, but it's still a blast none the less!

http://i59.photobucket.com/albums/g315/skyseemstragic/IMG_2023.jpg

The headless fellas hiding in the back are my next project, slated to be finished sometime in, oh, 2017. They are a 10 strong squad of Sternguard, properly bred with Death Company and Sanguinary Guard bits! Pew pew!

Thanks for reading, c&c is always welcome!

I have dabbled in the red paint here and there since my last update. And now that we have another new codex (the previous book was the start of this thread... where does the time go?) to play with, perhaps I will have some motivation to work on the pile of grey plastic in my closet!

First up, while digging through my old minis, I stumbled upon a bunch of metal scouts. Half were already Blood Angels, the other half were Ultra Marines (please, don't tell anyone!). So I stripped them all and painted the first 5. I figured I would give the sergeant some Blood Angels bling in the form of the new chainsword, a wing on his shoulder and a resculpt of his hair, it's now long and brushed back, very luxurious. Given the rules in the new codex, I will likely be swapping out the shotgun guys with 2 more bolt pistol and ccw Scouts and then adding a squad of 5 snipers. Troops tax, CHECK!

http://i59.photobucket.com/albums/g315/skyseemstragic/scouts.png

Interesting note, during their first battle, I chose to have the squad abandon the game winning objective to engage a squad of Deathwing Terminators. I basically had the game locked up, but told my buddy that it would please Sanguinius to slay a Deathwing with a shotgun. I got 2. laugh.png

Next, we have the first motions into my 10 strong Sternguard squad. The squad is soooo expensive, but so freaking dangerous (2 melta, 3 combi-melta, 5 combi-plasma. This might be overkill. I might not care. biggrin.png ) The plan is to combat squad them, pack them all into a pod and get that first blood. I have been running them alongside two Furiosos podding as well. This fellow is one of the plasma mooks veterans. His base is actually finished now and all of the detail work completed, but he's in the basement and I'm upstairs, so...

http://i59.photobucket.com/albums/g315/skyseemstragic/stern.png

Last but not least, I stripped down another old Dreadnaught to craft my second Furioso! I tried to give him a more dynamic pose. I'll be painting him in pieces, so he's not even glued together yet (hence the plastic bit holding him up!) This one has the sarcophagus of the first metal Blood Angel dread as opposed to the generic version on my previous Furioso. The plan is for both of them to pod with Frag Cannons, either on a double-dread turn 1 or mixed up with my Sternguard while my Vindicators drive in from the front. I think I will pick up the new Blood Angel Terminator box when it drops and use that banner on this guy.
