Multiple MotW in one unit

Greetings,

I apologize if this has been brought up before, but I peruse the forums once a day and don't recall seeing this. Has anyone run with multiple MotW in the same unit?

I was thinking about it this weekend, and it looks like you can get 3 in a unit of GH or scouts (1 Motw, 1 WGPL, 1 WGBL). I don't necessarily think that MotW is useful on a character nut 3d6+3 rending attacks is pretty freaking scary.

I was thinking over my standard army list/unit choices and was thinking it could be all kinds of useful in a 6-8 scout pack w/ MG, PP, PP, MotW plus WGPL w/ Motw CM and perhaps some meltabombs (as he is losing the powerfist). They would of course be OBELing and could throw a monkey wrench in even the stoutest of objective holders (MEQ, etc.).

6 scouts equipped as above + WGPL would come in at an affordable 173 pts (or close to that, haven't memorized all point costs yet). Will net 2 melta shots, 2 pp shots which should be able to pop about anything's rear or side armor and if they happen to be close enough to charge guys in the transports, you're looking at 12+(4+2d6 rending attacks) if my averages are correct there will be 22 attacks on the charge.

Has anyone done this, and if not I will and I'll let you know how it goes.

Cheers,

Huzzah

Yeah, Rending kind of got the short end of the stick in 5th Edition. If it were 4th Edition Rending, I'd consider it, but as such, MotW is usually not as good a

buy as a Power Weapon, IMO.

It's not a bad purchase for Infantry, and it's reasonably useful on Wolf Guard with combi-weapons, but otherwise, it's pretty underwhelming as wargear.

one could maybe put it on a WG, maybe. depending on what the unit is for. if you are lucky and can get 4,5 or 6 a lot on you dice and you are facing horde/low Sv valued units then ok, but other then that it is really a waste of points.

and personally as a side note, i ran into a guy who gave the MotW to a WG in TDA....... i was forced to walk a way when he didn't understand my issue with it (HINT: PW)

Mark of the wulfen is a cool idea, but for the same points, you could have another grey hunter or wolf scout. I would take the extra guy. Another bolter and three attacks will be better against hordes and increase your survivability. If you're in it for the rending, take a power weapon or a power fist if you have the points. They're much better against heavy infantry than rending attacks.

However, if you just want to field a lot of werewolves and don't care as much about other considerations, that's cool too.

Hmm, thats one idea I hadn't considered for my flamer teams. even without the rending attacks the potential for bonus attacks is interesting... I'll have to look at the numbers and then give it a few test runs to see how effective it could be .

Mind you, I wouldn't use it on OBEL scouts. Against most forces they're little more then a suicide unit designed to kill they're points and then some. Old 'dex my list always had a OBEL squad with Melta, 2x P.Pistol. Always found it very effective, even without a P.Weap for in close. But with the change in points, composition, and OBEL rules... they're just not what they used to be, and I find the points better spent elsewhere. I'd have to be convinced they're worth taking again at all, before I'd even consider using MotW in them.

3 Games with Scouts (3 Wins)

Always Takes ALL MELTABOMBS (first off if you want Meltabombs for scounts you HAVE to pay for all the scouts, they are NOT Wolf Guard). Second I always take a full 10 man pack with a wolf guard pack leader with T-hamer and Combi-Multi.. They have full Kit, 2 Powerweapons or Pistols (Depends on game or if its all comers) and Marked scout! Expensive YES! Worth it, YES! Have you ever seen the Dirty Dozen? Nuff said! I will post some pics for you all as my pack is classic, but all that a side. The Kill Tally for my Pack is as Follows...

VS: Chaos 2500 Game

1 LandRaider :Turn they walked in lost 1 Scout in the blast =/

1 Squad Chaos Marines with Meltagun, and Lascannon

2 Plauge Marines

2 Khorne Zerkers

1 Rhino

Pack Loses: 4 Memebers

VS: Guard 2000 Pts

3 Basalisk Meltaboms turn they walked in Bye bye Lost 2 Scouts in the blast =/

14 Guards Men

1 Officer

6 Heavy weapons teams ( YES 6 Full BASES Mostly due to the D6 attacks and getting 5's and 6's)!!!!

VS: Guard 3000 Pts (This was my all time fav)

This one was so classic it gets a mini battle report. When I play my friends, we don't show each other our lists, we allow secrets, reserves to kept from view until the are the table ect. We prefere story based games and play for fun, more then anything else. So My friend has been playing guard for a while, and is starting to get the hang of his army. He was switching from ultras, so took some getting used to. He had finlly got enough for a BIG 3k game. So I give him full control of the table.

He sets up a strong fortress in the cornor of the table I have like 4 of the bastions and some custom multi kit ones made and a ton of armorcast trench terrain so he had it all set up and rip with guard. I had just made my drop pods that came with my battle forces, and I had 3 Gatoride Bottles Ready as "Counts as" to finish out my force!

Long story short the wolves drop into his lines and all hell breaks lose, he gives me a -1 on reserve rolls so my extra troops arn't landing and my first 3 packs are fully dug in at this point. He is moving in with these huge 50 troop mobs to eat up my packs and was picking apart the others in the open with heavy weapons fire. Just as My reserve pods (2 of them) come in and it looks like I might get some control again of the table he starts laughing as his next turn comes around. I'm like ok what have you got? He had just gotten off Ebay 3 new Leman Russ Tanks, and had taken a new guard thing that let him bring them in on a flank. So my wolves that had just gotten a a hold had 3 new battle tanks roll up their arse battle cannons and pie plates falling, las cannon hell breaking lose, and on top of the he had a New Vendettea loaded with Stormtroopers up flying CAP! So The tanks Roll out in Classic V With the lead tank some Plasma Something and at the Tail of the V is the Vendetta. Ok so right now my budy is gloating, and laughing and he kills off one of my weak packs with pie plates, and can't get to the others as they still have a few guard let to finish off in hand to hand. So he just moved up and waited. But I am on the other side of the table from him with ALOT of Open ground to cover, and my 2 packs who will be free in my turn are armed with Meltaguns, and WG with T hammer's all over them well over 40" away from this new problem. We are also playing a game where if I don't kill him off to a man I lose the game, which sounds hard, but its really if I didn't crush the head of the snake, then more guard would show up and kill more and it didn't matter wolves = Lost!. So anyway its all built up right, now mind you this is my first game using my scouts too, so he had not seen them either. He knew all my pods where in play and thought I was done on reserves. as all my preexplained gatoraid bottoles were expended!!! I get my scouts and roll for OBEL... I Roll a 4, all I need...

The Scouts follow right in behind the tanks that moved in and engulfed the rear of the coulum in a pressed edge moon. {> So that the Scouts are thicker on the flanks and at max coherency in the middle. This is important for my plan to have worked and it did. Scouts Fire Into The Bird with Combi Melta, Meltagun, and Bolt Pistols. Bird goes POP and little Men fall from the Sky and Land in the Middle of the tanks. YOu see where this is Going yet? Well as you can charge the unit that your fired at its transport, I declare my charge on the troopers, but those darn tanks are in the way of 6 of my 10 troops. However, my 2 power weapon, my MOTW, and my WG with T hammer happen to be capping the T on the end of the tanks V formation, which makes them the only troops that can get to the 10 stormtroopers. My other 4 WG use MeltaBombs on the Sqd of Russ that they Co-Charge on the way to the target.

So Picture this John woo Style because the turn they show up the walk right in behind this force of 3 Russ's 1 Vendetta, and 1 Sqd of Stormtroopers...

Melta's kill Vendetta

Men fall out, before they hit the ground my MOTW (Which is a scout with 2 chain axes) gets his 6+1 attacks his PW wielding frields hit with 8 attacks the damn WG didn't get a chance to even get a kill! The 4 Wolf Guard on the side come running up slapin limpit charges to the tanks and dive into cover as all three tanks explode!!!!!!

Then to top it all of, as if written for a script they get to consal move after killing the Glory boys and roll a 6!!!!!!! Which they use to charge out howling at their wolf brothers!!!

So yeah, if you want to take Meltabombs... But don't listen to me I have only been playing 40K and wolves since RT Days. What could I know...

lol, ok ok, I bow to the Wisdom of those longer in the tooth then I .

I used to only take a small 4-man strike team, 1x Melta, 2x P.Pistol. SOMETIMES with a WGPL with P.Fist. Only game I ever had them do exceptionally well was against static guard. Pretty much cleared 2 tables quarters on they're own :D. Though they usually downed at least a squad or expensive vehicle each game, so certainly always made they're points. New dex the squad I used to run no longer seemed as viable due to the raise in points, I admit I didn't really give them much of a chance, I shall rectify that.

To me it was always a thing of numbers... squad is worth x amount of pts, and kills x amount of pts per game. I promise I shall give the lads another go, with a larger pack size and some more wargear, and see how they go.

;) I think you will be happy with the results. I Use a Logan list most of the time, so I don't need the Elite slot, I could see it being a problem if you needed it. However, I think they are always well worth the cost, at least for me and my play style. Trop me a PM or message here and let me know how they do...
