Fighting Nob Bikers

So my friends are still annoyed that i keep wining so they keep proposing these lists that i am supposed to beat, however they all just keep using one trick ponys and i think this one is scary but pretty stoppable when i can tailor my list to counter it. After doing some searches on here i think the general idea is: SHOOT HIM LOTS!!!

his basic list is as many bikes as he can fit in (i believe its 3 squads of 10 each) with 2 warbosses on bikes as well. Besides that all he has is around 90 boys and maybe a tankbuster squad or something all for around 2500 pts. His goal is that while all my fire is pouring into those bikers who are tough with their painboys and 2 wounds each his whole mob of guys will be able to advance unscathed and by the time i am able to kill all his bikers the 90 boys will be crashing my line.

My initial thoughts here are max out on LF's with ML and go for some insta-kill action (even with his 3+ save i can do damage!) slap in some WG TDA with CML and even more krak missle goodness. Besides that my other ideas are 2 (or more) Rune Priests hitting him with Jaws (trying to snipe those painboys) and then a mix of Living Lightening and Murderous Hurricane to force him to make some dangerous terrain rolls. I feel that squads of GH rapid-firing into him will be good but i was wondering what a good plan is for when he actually gets into combat because i believe it will take a miracle for none of his bikers actually to get into melee. Would a squad of TWC be good here to either steal his charge or after he anihilates one of my squads i could get the charge myself? Another good (sounding anyway) option is some WG charging out of a Land Raider with some TH's and maybe a WP...

Let me know what you think about my thoughts and then any random advice about fighting Nob Bikers in general... again i feel he is handicapping himself because once i take out the bikes all he has is 90 boys (which is a lot) but there is no other teeth to his force.

Thanks in advance

Honestly, the sure-firest way to kill them is to hit them with s10 an s8 in assault. Whatever you send to kill them will probaly get ravaged, so you need to think of ways to kill him with a cheaper unit then his nob bikers.

How you can do this... Well, I've thought about it. Sacraficing a bait unit for him to assault, and then hitting him with a strong counter attack unit that he can't allocate attacks to. A small unit of thunderwolf cavalry with a powerfist could reap a lot of instant deaths. a dreadnought works too, though have less attacks, and might not be able to quickly rout the unit.

The cav is also a great for steAling charges, though you risk getting ravaged when they hit back.

If you engage them in cover, your powerfist attacks are simultaneous and you don't risk losing the fist when the orks hit..

Vindicators can soften them up, but because of their cover saves you can't expect that to be what finishs them. Thisis why I recommend the counter assault unit. The vindi is key for making them a much more assaultable target - and think, maybe they lose some powerklaws with the vindicator blast. Then you can assault them with your dreadnoughts and not be afraid of losing them instantly.

Edit: I recommend the assault only because it is very easy to waste ALL of your time shooting the bikers, and not actually killing them, especially if they take a painboy (uh, 4+ save, followed by FNP...). With a little maneuvering, trickery, and smart play, you can can instant death his super squad with only a small sacrifice.

i'll tell you what i use to fight my friends nob bikers. TWC do work. ulrik with a squad of bloodclaws in an LRC works too. after you have whittled down his squads some a TWC charge should take out the majority of whats left. they will probably be taking a lot of damage as well so they are only good for killing 1 squad of bikers. of course it depends on how you equip them. i've never put SS on all of them. my squad comes in at 300 pts so if you equip them better they should make an even bigger hammer. ulrik on the other hand and his squad of bloodclaws have killed 2 squads of bikers and still had 7 bloodclaws left at the end of the game. lots of attacks and lots of wounds.

RPs and MLs are what you should maximize

Multiple RPs for jaws and MH. Jaws the bikers then use MH to control his mobs

Max out on LF and ML with Las/Plas Razorbacks

Mix in some WG with CML

Add some LS Typhoons for even more ML. If you want to shred hordes you can squadron the Typhoon with a pair of 2xHB Tornados as well

Tons of GHs with Plasma and fists accompanied by WG

At 2500 pts you can make a ridiculous list tailored to ork smashing

3 LF Packs all with Missles

Grey Hunter Squads 2 Meltaguns each, I like Motw, Plasma Pistol, Powerweapon and Standard (But flavor to taste)

Then just Castle the F Up.. Long Fangs in the Middle Grey HUnters on the edge. Put a Run Priest with each GH pack and get and many MH as you can get.

Lastly a couple of Speeders with Missles and Meltas.

I would take Njal if you have the points. As long as you don't have to Take any objectives you win. If you have to take objectives then you need to rethink a bit. Taking rhinos will get ate so maybe take Logan and a small squad of wolfguard with Jumppacks (Like 3) keep them safe and out of site until the bikers are dead then boom jump out and contest his objective maybe even take it as you will be a scoring unit and all the bikers should be dead.

As for the Boys they will break on your bolters if you dig in and make them come to you. Just remember that they have frags, and FC so break cover and steal the charge if you can, don't wait for them to Charge thinking you can use Counter charge, noob mistake.

Good Luck Brother...

Haha, my first thought was JoTWW too.

But furthermore on a rules basis, and since my big book is not within arms reach... When someone is tagged with murderous hurricane, they count as being in BOTH difficult and dangerous terrain. So then would be hit with difficult terrain and dangerous terrain checks in their move, no questions asked. Then they ould be assaulting through it as well, more checks....

But here is where I am foggy. Bikes count difficult terrain AS dangerous terrain, and murderous hurricane says they are in BOTH, so would each bike take 2 dangerous terrain checks? In both movement and assault?

Sure, it would not slow the bikes down at all, but it will shave some numbers off.

MH means that infantry need to take a difficult terrain test (2D6 and pick highest for moving) in adition to a dangerous terrain test (roll a D6 for veryone, roll of a 1 = wound). Bikes ignore difficult terrain, and instead take dangerous terrain tests. you onl ever test once per movement phase, its like moving through multiple pieces of terrain, you only take one difficult terrain test regardless of how many different bits you move through.

i usually send my termies up against nobs (admittedly my opponent usually takes them on foot). i enjoy the big mash up that reults in mywolf lord and bodyguard vs his warboss and bodyguard... admittedly i try and whittle them down a tad first but i don't trust any other unit to reliably take them down in combat

thanks guys, all the advice rocks! I'm thinking right now 4 squads of GH chilling in rhinos with 2 RP firing Jaws and LL and MH as much as possible, with 3 squads of LF's 5x ML with TLLC razorbacks and a small group of TWC (im thinking 3-4) possibly led by a WL armed with a TH or PF (to get those S10 attacks in melee)

I agree with the general concensus of taking them down in melee because then they lose that 3+ inv save, but i definitley want to whittle them down as much as possible before careening into them. i believe my semi-list up top comes out to about 2500 pts, do you think a dred would be a worthy addition (if so what weapon, im feeling PC for those bikers and hopefully later those mobs of boys) but otherwise genearl idea is to castle up hopefully cacth them in the crossfire and then either sacrifice a unit or steal the charge with my TWC... also random question are the 3 razorbacks worth it, for 75 points each it certainly is a hefty chunk of points for squads who wont be moving much anyway, but the LC S9 shots are pretty nifty too...

again any and all advice is more than welcomed :D

  • 2 weeks later...

Great Sucess!!

Finally played my friend last night and although he was rolling amazing well all night i was rolling horribly it didnt matter for the brave son's of Russ!

Things started out badly with him winning first turn but after he moved everything up and turbo-boosted the space wolves went nuts. Men of the match were the 3 runepriests throwing around 3 Jaws a turn!!!! These guys were absolute monsters and left my opponent crying OP. They accounted for a warboss on bike, painboy on bike and then 4 other random Nobs, krak missles were a little sad with the 3++ save they were getting but was able to thin them down more and then my TWC squad charged the larger of the two squads and wiped them taking a wound on every member of the squad in return. At the end of turn 1 that left him with 4 nob bikers without a painboy left!!! His one-trick pony was effectively hamstrung and turned into glue ;)

We ended up calling the game at the end of his turn 3 because he had somewhere around 70 boys and 15 lootas remaining. Half of those boys were stranded 10 inches in front of all 3 of my long fangs squads with no cover save possible. One squad of grey hunters and their rhino were destroyed completley 2 other squads were reduced by half and 1 squad was untouched. full LF and full TWC. It was late and he didnt want to see his boys get slaughtered so he threw in the towel.

All in all not too shabby for the wolves being outnumbered about 2.5:1, it was an ok game my opponent put all his eggs in one basket and i just made sure i could blow up that basket, he also made mistakes with his 100+ boys and packing them into a huge blob trying to get around an impassable terrain (yay frag templates) also the nobs leading the squads did not have powerclaws so my rhinos would just tankshock and block move/assault on my units. So lots of tactical errors from him, made a few myself but all in all it was a good game
