DarkMark
I'm being rather indecisive at the moment, and need some help. I sold all my RT marine stuff a couple of years back, including a fair few bits like the 3-pack rhinos still on sprues  , and decided last year it was time to return to the power armour! So just before the wolves hit I read through the Ragnor books, and was inpressed. However, literally on the day of release I had to emigrate and naturally had real life tm to deal with. So, by the time I got back to it news was out that the BA were on their way. I decided to wait. I'm not fussed which codex is 'better' as I'm more interested in the model side of things. And so begins the problem. I love the wolf pack box and termies, and they're good value for money. Critically though there are no wolves or TWC models ( to speak of). The new BA DC set is lovely but very costly, compared the the SW set. The SG haven't won me over tbh, and I tend to think of hot crossed buns when I look at the knee pads. Without conversion I could take the new ven dred if I go with SW :) Having to order the furioso from GW, and convert it is somewhat off putting. I'm thinking of a list something like this: Wolf priest maybe on bike Ven dred WG in pod? 2xGH in DPs 1xBC mainly for fluff reasons Bikes LSS 1xLG LRC I think thats probably around 1.5k, and would be a decent start. Yay or Nah? Back to the BA. I love the new pred, Astorath, Lemartes, and DC. I think though if I run with an Astorath led list it would cost me a small fortune, and may not be clever on the TT. Roughly: Astorath Chappy in termy armour because I love the figure 2x DC one with JP with Lemartes, one in a rhino or LR 1x tac Assault termies chappy goes here 2x Baal pred 1x vet So people, trying to be fair ;) , tell me why I should pick SW over BA, or even vice versa. Note too that the lists are very rough, and are mainly chosen with the models I like in mind. Hfran Morkai
You won't get the LSS with the Space Wolves I'm afraid. With regards to which army to choose, that's really down to you. Are you more of a rough and ready, in your face kind of person? Quite happy to defy authority to do what you feel is right? If so the Wolves are probably a better fit, with our Grey Hunters and Blood Claws. Or do you prefer the idea of an artistic force, who perhaps try turning warfare from something savage into something more akin to art? Both Chapters take honour seriously, the Blood Angels are more serious in this aspect whereas the Wolves are all about creating sagas worthy of being told within the Fang with several barrels of ale. With the Wolf list I would probably put the Wolf Priest with the Blood Claws in the LRC, an expensive unit but really nasty. Grey Mage
Obviously I prefer SWs or I wouldnt be here <_<. Theyre a fun army, where just about any unit in the army is viable in CC, and most are good at shooting as well. Excellant psychic defense throughout, wich is becoming increasingly needed in todays game. Of course, I dont want them all dripping in furs and charms, so my guys are in many cases old tactical squads with GH bitz all around, some of my stuff that wasnt painted when the new book came out has had arm/head/torso swaps... for a touch of ostentation and wolfiness above and beyond the normal. BA are very pretty... but their units are also much more straightforward. A tac squad shoots, an assault squad assaults, etc. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/196390-gritty-pretty/#findComment-2339698 Share on other sites
DarkMark
Sorry I meant squadron rather than storm. I fancy the LRC mainly for looks, and not just for the BC delivery system, though I'm sure its nasty :D Also is there a way to sneak the excellent chapter master models into a SW list? Grey Mage
Its a wonderful tank- all the firepower of a GH squad and then some, with immunity to str 7 and lower weaponry... and when they finally do kill it a GH squad just comes out of the wreck and eats them. Ullr Direfang
wow, i haven't seen something like this since before the new 'dex cam out..... to me, i think you already know which you want, deep down in side there is that one that has a little more pull then the other. which means all you really have to do is say what you like about them both and figure out which one it is. i personally like the Norse feel more then anything else, but that is my take. jjfelber
Get both, Paint your own color scheme that is Dark Gray and Dark Red. Get both Codex and switch it up as you wish. Get a few wolfy heros and a few bloody characters and there you go, there will be no confusion on what you are playing. Edit: If there is TWC on the table people will know you are playing Wolves and If there are Angel wings on the table people will know you are playing Blood. Uncooked
You can only take one death company, so its either jump packs or on foot. Wolf guard are the better army to play if your planning on getting serious - blood angels are expensive unit wise, and in a tourney, unless if its a big tourney points wise (not many in the UK, avg pts is 1500 for grand tournaments). Blood angels have the nicer models and the BAAL :cuss When i saw the new blood angels codex i wanted to get them, the more i looked through it i saw too many problems with it (playing wise and balanced army lists). Nice looking army = Blood angels Best marine army to play = Space wolves Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/196390-gritty-pretty/#findComment-2340395 Share on other sites
TopToffee
Blood angels have the nicer models Don't know about that tbh... I still think our Terminators are the best plastics GW have done. They're not as 'flashy" as some of the new BA models... but they're just plain AWESOME Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/196390-gritty-pretty/#findComment-2340439 Share on other sites
Ullr Direfang
Blood angels have the nicer models .... Nice looking army = Blood angels really? i think the wolves look better, i guess i am just a not that into the "Romanesque" look at all. Grey Mage
Oh, the new blood angels minis are pretty... but thats because theyre of the same quality as the SW plastics. Ours are just as good... the start of a new age of marine plastics, and its cool to have the first run as it were. Though I admit, Ive got a couple of the winged jump packs for Hunin and Munin. DarkMark
Thanks everyone for the input. I've tried scoring the models, and this is roughly what I'm thinking: Characters Around a draw, Njal and priests for SW, Astorath and Lemartes for BA being my favourites. Troops Although I really like the DC when it comes to regular marines SW win as BA, in my option, need the bits from the DC set to look better. GH are better than reg tacs easily. DC and BC are probably a draw, as both aren't optimal choices gaming wise. Using Astorath would allow me to take more DC units but they're super expensive, and would really eat into the points of a standard 1.5k game. Elites I love the SW termies, and have yet to see a bad one. SG on the other hand look to be suffering with a dodgy GW paint job, and so look a bit clunky. Doing a wolfwing has crossed my mind. Fast BA win this easily with the new Baal, though the turrent looks a bit rough in the piccies! Heavy A respectabe draw. Living in the grim north, every 2nd man and his dog like SW. Also I'm sick of looking out my window and still seeing snow at this time of year, enough already! :woot: My poor head...
