Your Golden Rule

Only using fully painted armies and putting some elbow grease into it. I saw an entire model proxied with just a base, no legs, no guns, no basing on top, just a base.

I've got to admit I'm a one for winning by making the perfect balanced list, not some beard fest - but play fair if your looking to play. Don't go saying 'oh well they don't need a Ld test because you forgot to tell me at the end of shooting' - what goes around comes around.

Never underestimate just how crazy the dice can be. Calculating the odds is fine, but don't think you know what's going to happen just because the chance is high.

Two Examples from my recent games:

- Ragnar's WTT nullifying three warp lances from zoanthropes. That's a 5+ roll required to nullify and I rolled a 6 three times. Not a terribly high chance of doing that.

- Arjac saving 17 wounds from termagant shooting. He made 17 saves at once. That made everyone there, including me, stare in awe for a few seconds.

The dice can be very kind or extremely cruel, regardless of how high or low the odds are of a particular roll.

And as I always say to the people who whine about a 3+ armor save, it's only a great save if you make it. I frequently don't.

Never choose winning over true Fenrisian spirit,

i once charged my wolf lord into a combat of 4 grey hunters and a Bloodthirster when he couldve contested an objective simply because the grey hunters previously killled a whole lot of bloodletters and deserved to live.

* Never assume you know the odds on the dice... the dice gods are fickle creatures... watched an Avatar roll 9 1s for saves...

... and watched Arjac survive shooting from a 2x 20 man guard squads using fire-rank-fire... from 8" away  (120 lasgun shots...)

* Always assume your enemy knows exactly what your trying to do... so just get drunk and start swinging that chain sword!!!

* Yes, your Blood Claws DID drink every keg they had sitting in the Land Raider... but they're wild swinging of point things are still going to turn the enemy into mince meat.

* If a dice rolls a 1 on a 2+ save, BURN IT!!! :woot:

What are your golden Rules for your SWs, and 40k in general?

What are common mistakes you see made?

Your Always, and Nevers...

- Always make sure that your unit can do atleast two of the four things well.

- Always keep your objectives in mind.

- Always synergise your lists.

- Always ask the tough questions before it matters.

- Always know your foe.

- Never forget its a game.

- Never leave an HQ without a squad to be in.

- Never stop asking questions.

- Never buy a rhino by itself.

- Never be rude to a mod.

But I think decoy and Lord R said it best: never give up a game. Ive seen the most amazing wins pulled out in the last round... because the player wouldnt stop fighting. Hell, its how I win my tournaments- its not over until the time is called or every model I own is off the board.

- Always make sure that your unit can do atleast two of the four things well.

What four things are you referring to?

Speed, Durability, fire power and assault.

Of course each breaks down into two types... sheer speed, like landspeeders, or tactical speed like rhinos/drop pods. Durability comes in heavy armor *landraiders, TDA* and numbers *Fenrisian wolf packs* while fire power and assault both come in anti-tough and anti-numeric values.

If something doesnt excell in atleast two areas then its scope is simply to limited IMHO for use in an all takers marine list. I actually play my eldar along similar lines- squeezing the most multi-tasking out of aspect warrior squads I possibly could has made me very appreciative of the strengths of our incredibly versatile units in the SW codex.

But I think decoy said it best: never give up a game.

Hmmm I must be invisible :P

No, I just edited my post after scrolling up... and didnt quite reach your post. Sorry LR.

Never forget that when you're using special characters, they don't just have their special rules. Check their wargear and remember which saga they have. Forgetting that Njal has Saga of Majesty has screwed me twice.

On the other hand, looking at Ragnar's wargear just in time in a recent game and confirming that he has a WTT saved him and his wolfguard from being obliterated.

It's easy to remember a few of the cooler things that someone like Arjac can do, such as throwing the hammer, but don't forget that extra attack in the first round of assault because of his special shield. You'll kick yourself later if you forget it, and trust me when I say it hurts.
