Revitalising my BA

ancient god

Recommended Posts

Hey folks,

quite some time since I posted any BA here! I'm really happy to be back. :cuss

Dodgy pics ahead! I got impatient and took some snapshots without any proper lighting.

First up is a Baal Predator that I painted to get into BA again. It's the old metal kit, glad the next one I'll paint will be 100% plastic.

Next up, two Dreadnoughts. One of the regular shooty variety and one Furioso. I mixed the regular kit with the venerable dread kit for these.

A quick snap of the freehand, in memoriam Tycho...

Aaand the Furioso...

And since these were part of my BAPC vow, the required WIP shots:

I'm now working on a couple of Landraiders, one of them is a Redeemer. Also part of the vow, here's some WIP shots. Started painting them tonight, not much done yet...

I hope to get them done by Saturday.

OK, hope you like them and sorry for the very pic-heavy post.

Glad you like the bots. :P I think I went a bit heavy on the chipping, will do a little less from now on.

Baal Dropout, I know, I'm shamefully lazy at the moment. :) I'll have to sit down soon and drill a couple of holes here and there. The dread and LRs suffer from the same laziness.

I'm really eager to get home and get painting again today! Want to see those Landraiders done. :P (And start on my nipply Sanguinary Priests, hehe...)

In other news: Easter vacation in T-4 hours! It's like GW planned all this, BA release + Easter vacation = weeeeee!

Hooooo yeah!

Ancient God is back!

I was a big fan of your Blood Angels (And Tau) way back when you posted them.

I will be keeping my eyes on this thread.

It should serve as a great inspiration for my own Blood Angels... If I don't chose to go for Raven Guard (Those new Forgeworld models are tasty)

Brothers of the forum – buckle your safety harnesses – ancient god is back among us.

And welcome back brother! I see that you still know how to paint red. You know you have to wonder when players move away from BA to paint TAU? Geeze, whatever. (Not that I’m anyone to talk).

You going to get a blog going? I’m sure a good number of BA players would follow along.

Great stuff as always. I will be watching intently for more.

Not everyone can be as old as us Dem. But anyone that’s been around since the 3rd Edition days counts as a vet in my book (though some of us are even a bit older than that, i.e. the old guard vs. the grave guard  ).

Hey,

thanks for the warm welcome back and the kind words guys. ;)

OMG, I'll blog my progress here, let's see how far I make it this time. :P No Tau going to divert me now! (Maybe Dark Eldar but they're far away :))

Machinepriest, I read in another topic that you're going for BA now, good good... :>

Custodian Athiair, this batch was first sprayed black (GW Chaos Black), then red (Army Painter's Pure Red). Drybrush all edges and stuff using Vallejo Brown Rose and afterwards apply and paint on all markings. After that, use a torn piece of blister padding to chip the red. I used German Camo Black Brown (Vallejo) here. Add very tiny spots of Chainmail where the chipping is heaviest (see LR door for details).

To finish the red off I dabbed a homemade oil wash (Vandyke Brown/Black with lots of thinner) into all places I wanted to shade. The oils cling to crevasses and leave little to be cleaned up afterwards but take longer to dry and are also rather unhealthy. Also, be careful to let them dry fully before you spray sealer on your model, the thinner will cloud up the finish if it hasn't had time to evaporate.

As the Dreads had so much other detail that needed to be painted and comparatively little red, I used thinned-down German Camo Black Brown (Vallejo) to shade them. Applied several layers of washes until I was satisfied. Both shading methods gave me basically the same result. On the Landraiders, I'm currently mixing both techniques - I'm shading finer details as I paint along with the Black Brown and will give the less detailed areas an oil wash in the end.

Paint the rest of the vehicle to taste (I painted all non-red parts with their base colour before applying the oil wash, so that I wouldn't get problems with paint adherence).

I haven't painted any infantry yet with the new spray so I'm not 100% sure how I'll shade them. Brown Rose is the perfect colour for highlights, with a bit of orange and a bit of pink in it, but I'm going to try out some different washes for the shading. I'll post up further comments on this once I've painted the LR crew.

Probably the German Camo Black Brown but I might experiment with Leviathan Purple and Baal Red too.

Hope this helps! I'm not the most organised writer. :) Ask away if anything remains unclear.

So, back to painting the Landraiders...

Thanks for the recipe, I might give that Pure Red spray a go in the future.

One question though: is there a colour similar to the spray that I can brush on? I'm fairly certain that with my sometimes careless painting I need a colour to touch up the red.
