WG w/ fist and Combi-melta

I notice nearly every list that i see posted on here features a Wolf Guard unit, all with fists and combi-meltas split up to lead Grey hunter packs. I wonder though, is the WG carrying the fist that much better than the GH carrying it?

If we have the WG toting the fist and combi-melta, it costs 43 points. While the GH carrying it costs 30, but can't take a combi-melta. Now, i understand that the extra points are for the leadership, extra attack and the combi-melta. But, in most cases the addition of the WG means that the GH can't stay as a 10 man unit, and because of this they lose an extra special weapon. I'm not entirely convinced that it's worth it, but then again i haven't played many games with my wolves.

If the GH carries the fist:

you save 13 points

you get a free plasma gun (or whatever you want) which essentially saves you up to another 15 points.

fills an elite slot for the WG

If the WG carries the fist:

you get a downgrade to a combi-melta instead of a regular melta (or plasma, or flamer)

you get one more fist attack

you get one more leadership

For that extra 13 points you could get a wolf standard, or for a little more, you could get MotW on an additional hunter. Wouldn't that be more useful that the single bonus attack, and +1 ld? Not to mention drop in shooting effectiveness when exiting the pod/rhino.

Clearly, everyone takes the WG for a reason, maybe I'm missing something?

I believe your math is off. A WG with just a PF, is a few points cheaper than the GH with PF. He becomes more expensive with a combi weapon but only by a few points.

Unless my math is really just that bad...

EDIT: No my math isn't that bad. A GH with a power weapon is 30. A GH with a power fist is 40.

Ld 8 can be a liability.

Extra attack with the powerfist improves your chances of doing well in combat, especially once you get in Round 2 and after. If you get stuck in with someone like plague marines, your regular attacks will bounce off their T5, and the power fist is just about the only way to hurt them reliably. Get stuck in with a walker, and the extra PF swing might help you out, as opposed to the combat dragging on and on and on. Few things are more heartbreaking than whiffing with the fist and realizing that your GH squad will continue to get slowly whittled down in CC they can't win.

I use this type of WG in a couple of my squads but I also include the GH w/ PF to maximize the number of PF attacks. It's a bit pricy but it's also been very worth it too! Nothing like rolling 5 PF attacks and watching your opponent as he realizes that he's about to loose something important, lol

Hmm. So Lord of Hats is right, my math was off.

A GH is indeed 40 points with a fist, compared to a WG at 38. So it's actually cheaper to get the WG, or 3 points more to get the combi-melta.

In that case, an addition punch fist attack, and the ld is definitely worth it for three points. Thanks for pointing that out!

@ Olgerth: You're completely right. My regular army is all plague marines, and i laugh maniacally at tac squads when they can't reliably hurt me.

@ Aeddon: I'm seriously considering doing the same. I'm really tempted to go one step further and make uber units with GH fist, WG fist, and MotW just to see how brutal they can be in CC.

I suppose Mods can close this thread. I don't wanna throw anyone else off with my poor math skillzzz.

One time I had a 10 man grey hunter pack with powerfist and attached rune priest assault a unit of plague marines with blight grenades. I killed no plague marines and my one power fist attack missed. Defensive grenades are a pain in the arse.
