Quick question for my knowledgable Brothers

The guy I play on a normal basis tends to play Tau. He has some gadget called a Target Lock. He claims that he can put this on three different models in a unit and will then let all three target different squads of my Wolves. I figure it's more like our Split Fire and he should only be targeting (at most) two units. I know many of you have faced Tau before (or field them yourselves). Would someone clarify this one for me?

A Target Lock does indeed allow the Battlesuit to target a different unit than that targeted by the squad. In short in a 3 man Crisis Suit team, if 2 Suits have Target Locks then all 3 can shoot at a seperate target. One without the TA can shoot at the chosen unit, then the other two can use their TA's to target another enemy instead if they wish.

The downside of course being that it takes up a Hard Point for those without access to wargear. So either you're opponent is trading accuracy for the ability to split fire, or they're paying quite a few points for the ability on a Crisis Bodyguard.

Make sure to keep in mind when playing Tau that Shas'ui Crisis Suits have 3 Hard Points and that's it, and a Twin-Linked weapon takes up 2 Hard Points. Shas'vre squad leaders or bodyguards have 3 Hard Points and can take Hardwired Wargear, but doing so is considerably more expensive.

Vash is correct - the thing with tau is - they hit on 4's basic and are weedy in combat - just run towards them with everything that doesn't have heavy weapons and put everything in the open... EVERYTHING! you present enough targets hes going to be scared out of his head about what to shoot at, diverting through terrain or around it looses you a turn or two just trying to get around, best thing you can do is get close and do it damn quick.

don't be scared of fire warriors, outside of rapid fire there only likly to kill 1 marine through shooting average - thats what mine was when i played them and it is mathematically correct bs3 (12 /2 = (6 / 6) * 4 = 4 wounds = 1 marine)

If you have a drop pod, kill the pathfinders first

Yep, theyre allowed to do that. I mean come on... tau shoot. Its what they do, and its almost all that they do at that. Youd figure theyd be good at it right?

Yet most are only BS3, so it's kind of ironic.

Yep, and whats weirder is that their fancy laser pointers only let them go up to BS 5.

Well I might be wrong but BS6+ did not have anything special about it in 4th ED compared to BS5 like it does today right?

Thatd be right.... so why put the restriction in there?

For reference, other 4rth ed codices had the occaisional unit with BS higher than 5, they just didnt change anything.

Yes... but imagine if they could go higher then BS5. A S5, 32" range, rapid fire weapon, with BS6 and greater could turn out quite nasty (specially now with true LOS)... frankly I'm glad they can only get to BS5 :)

And Uncooked is pretty much spot on the money. Hit 'em hard and fast and just throw everything at them. Unless you ahve some bikes, jetpacks, or speeders to hunt/dogfight they're suits or skimmers I usually ignore those and get my pups into the safety of close combat asap. DO NOT try and weather they're fire for any longer then you have to, considering even they're basic rifles can open up the FRONT armour of a rhino. Kill his troops, then clean up the rest. These days I take at least one Typhoon for dogfighting Skimmers, and they're quite nice against horde armies as well (Used to use a Tornado, but with the nerf of rending...).
