Largest Space Wolf force out there?

Recommended Posts

I remember seeing a topic a while back about what our actual 'model count' was... made for an interesting read. This is a little more ego driven Im afraid... ;) . I apologise if this has been replicated before but I couldn't find it by searching...

So, who has the biggest fully painted Space Wolf force out there? And please, no skullduggery

I start the bidding at 8551, excluding wargear (i.e. weapons only) and about 2 - 2.5k 'in progress' or 'too rubbishly painted to be included' . Impress me ;)

Apparently, one of the guys who works at the local GW store has the entire Space Wolves chapter fully modeled and painting, with all Wolf Lords, a complete Great Wolf Company, and an armada of vehicles. They say he's got over 4000 models XD.

I've never seen it but everyone swears by it. I can only imagine what his work room looks like.

Im havent recounted yet.

3 Wolflords (ragnar and Logan)

4 Wolguard Battleleaders

2 Wolfpriest (ulirc)

3 Runepriests (njal)

Bjorn

40+ wolfguard (arjac)

10 Wolfscouts

Dreadnought + droppod

50 Greyhunters

30 Bloodclaws (Lukas)

2 rhinos

1 rhino/ razorback/ whirlwind

5 Droppods

9 Fenris wolves

5 Thunderwolf

Predator

landraider

Vindicator

18 longfangs

I also have lying (not added to the force yet.

Bloodclaw bikers

10 bloodclaws

Couple of Hq's

Leman Russ Exterminator

Somewhere between 10 and 15k. I had it up to 13k in the old dex, but haven't counted since the new dex and have acquired around 3k since. It's probably around 13k again as there were a lot of overpriced long fangs and 30pt BC jump packers in the old dex version. If I get a chance I'll try and do a recalc at the weekend. All painted to basic gaming or beyond except 5 Mr Dandy Thunderwolves arrived this week - they do look good!

Update Edit - scratch that, after some counting I'm up to 17k. I really need to do a full sort and sell some of my early EBay acquired stuff. I love having the option to do any build, but 100 GHs, 40 BCs and 40WG is probably over the top even for Apocalypse, don't even get me started on the multiple characters (3 Leman Russ, 4 Ulrik, 3 Ragnar, 2 Logan, 3 old Njal, 1 new etc.) Just checked how much this little lot (and paint, brushes etc) has cost and the answer is £2k ($3) ;) - wow must have been more efficeint ways of acquiring a really nice, really big SW army!

Berek Thunderfist's Great Company:

Wolf Lord on Thunderwolf (Berek)

Wolf Lord on Bike (Berek)

Ragnar Blackmane

Ulric The Slayer

x2 Wolf Priests on bikes

x1 Rune Priest on bike

x2 Rune Priests

Bjorn The Fell-Handed

Iron Priest

x4 Thunderwolf calvery

x8 Wolf Guard

x60 Grey Hunters

x6 Rhinos

x14 Blood Claws

x6 Wolf Scouts

x30 Swiftclaw Bikers

x3 Swiftclaw Attack Bikes

x3 Landspeeders

Land Raider Redeemer

Scratch Built Warhound Titan

Scartch Built Thunderhawk Gunship

I play with a normal Space Wolf force and a bike army with Space Wolves

My Space Wolves sit at what I feel is about the average size of a Great Company with:

Wolf Lord

Wolf Priest

Rune Priest

2 Battle Leaders

2 Iron Priests

10 Wolf Guard

5 Wolf Guard Terminators

5 Wolf Guard Pack Leaders

5 Wolf Scouts

Venerable Dreadnaught

58 Grey Hunters

30 Blood Claws

5 Skyclaws

5 Long Fangs

10 Fenresian Wolves

2 Land Raider Crusaders

4 Rhinos

It comes out to 4,783 Points.

I'll likely add some more Skyclaws, 2 Razorbacks, 2 Rhinos and another Land Raider but that's about all, I don't see the point in having 10k+ of a single army. However when you add in my 50+ Imperial Fists, 50+ Raven Guard, 130 odd Ultramarines and 26 Grey Knights I have about 18,000 points of Space Marines of one variety or another... and a Baneblade cause... why not?

logan

njal(both armour)

ulric

bjorn

canis

ragnar

iron priest (4 servitors)

1 rune priest

2 battle leaders

7 pa wolf guard

10 termis

50 grey hunters

15 blood claws

10 long fangs

5 scouts

4 thunder wolves

5 sky claws

15 wolves

2 standard dreadnoughts

6 rhinos

whirlwind

2 vindis

3 drop pods

1 predator

1land raider

1 redemer

1 speeder

i think its about 4.5-5k

I'm still working on my first 1500pts. My main question regarding this topic is, why?!

There are so many great model ranges and codexes out there that I tend to get to about 2k and then stop and move to a new force. I don't understand why you would collect such a big force unless you played apocalypse as standard (which I certainly don't). I considered doing a full company and then baulked at the financial cost of that!

i guess most of us do it in some way for the love of modelling space wolves and maybe even have totaly decked out packs(markings etc) so they have to use another pack should they wish to use the 2 MG pack instead of the 1MG 1PG etc

that's just personal opinion though

Its all personal preference isn't it? I do have several other noteworthy forces, particularly a 2.5k + Grey Knight force, so can see why you say that, but its the individuality of your collection which makes this hobby so great isn't it?

There are loadsa ideas why you might collect a big force, but the main gaming reason I can see is so that you can actually make choices when you pick an army rather than be forced to pick the same units over and over again. For example, I can pick any unit out of the Space Wolf codex except thunderwolves and Canis (both of which I have playtested using some of my more interesting biker models as proxys to see how they perform!). This means that at 2,3 or even 4k I can completely surprise even the most regular of opponents with what I might bring, and thus keep the hobby interesting for both of us.

The main other reason is... how do you know when an army is finished!? That secret eludes me ;)
