New to the gaming aspect of the hobby

Recommended Posts

So, while I'm certainly no stranger to the GW hobby, I've never really played a game of 40k. I had a few tries back during 3rd edition rules, but anything I remember from then is long gone :o A friend (who shall remain a nameless Tau playing grot) and I decided that if we were going to get back in to the hobby, it would be nice to actually play a game. To that end, I've ordered a few things, including the new black reach set, both for the rules and the ridiculously cheap way of getting a dreadnought and terminators in the box. On top of that, I still have a lot of space marine plastic sets from when the 4th edition codex came out that I haven't started.

So, since I still have a load of space marine sprues that I have not started, I thought that I might as well build them up and convert them into the sons of russ. Problem is, not being a player, I'm not too sure how they should be built up. Here are the sets I have available to make up my wolves force:

Black reach stuff:

1 Space Marine Captain

10 Tactical Space Marines, one with flamer, one with missile launcher, and sergeant with bolt pistol and close combat weapon

5 Space Marine Terminators with storm bolters and powerfists, sergeant with power sword and storm bolter

1 Space Marine Dreadnought with twin-linked heavy flamer, close combat weapon and storm bolter

Other sets and blisters:

1 Space Marine Commander

Full space marine command squad (Veteran Sergeant, Company Champion, Apothecary, Standard Bearer and a Space Marine with assault weapon)

Assault squad (5 space marines with jump packs)

2 unbuilt plastic terminators (others have been mutilated, built etc)

2 full tactical squads and a combat squad (25 marines)

1 space marine bike

Space wolves pack (10 marines)

1 metal captain lysander blister (terminator armour, storm shield and thunder hammer)

I was considering building them up as the following army, mostly ignoring wargear for now:

HQ

Wolf lord in terminator armour, with thunder hammer and storm shield

Wolf priest on bike

Elites

Venerable dreadnought with twin linked heavy flamer, close combat weapon and storm bolter

Wolf guard pack: 5 wolf guard, terminator armour, 3 storm bolters + chainfists, 1 with storm bolter and power sword, 1 with powerfist, storm bolter and cyclone missile launcher.

Troops

Grey Hunter Pack 1: 1 Wolf Guard with combi-melta + frostblade, 5 Grey Hunters with plasma gun, wolf standard

Grey Hunter Pack 2: 1 Wolf Guard with storm bolter + power sword, 5 Grey Hunters with meltagun gun, wolf standard, meltabombs

Fast Attack

Skyclaw assault pack: 4 skyclaws with bolt pistols and close combat weapons, 1 skyclaw with plasma pistol and power weapon

Heavy Support

Long Fangs pack: Squad leader with close combat weapon and flamer, 2 long fangs with missile launchers, 2 long fangs with heavy bolters

Obviously, not being a player yet means that I'm not too clued up on how well this army will work. Any input is appreciated, brothers!

Welcome back, I'm a big player of the game myself, so i'll just be brief :o

Is that list around 1,000points?

Kinda don't get the wolf priest on bike, i am guessing hes going with the skyclaws, but hes going to have to end up rolling difficult terrain tests if the rest of your unit is flying over it.

Grey hunters units are pretty small. In the new Edition of the rules, only troops can capture objectives, if those guys take a couple of turns from good tau shooting, they will not exist. Maybe stick them into transports? everything could be a bit slow in keeping up

Well, I've just received my bonus, so I'm considering investing in more troops. I'm assuming transports are a no brainer, but is there anything else I should look in to getting?

Hunters! they are the most flexible tactical squad in the game IMO. Pretty much what you want to do is pick up the Space Wolf Pack box, and then a Tac Squad box. Enough parts for 20 bedecked GH's and still enough bits leftover to wolfy up anything else you may have. But yeah, hunters will provide you the solid backbone of just about any force out there. Grab as many of them as you can early on so you can try different squad make-ups.

Other than that, you could use some anti-tank. A predator is a nice option (esp if you are good at magnetizing). Otherwise another box of devastators for some longfangs will work too.

Well, I've already got enough tac marines, and a space wolves pack is on the way, so the hunters are covered. I've also found a cheap razorback, so wondering if it's worth it or I should throw the money at some scouts and longfangs.

On a related note, does anyone know which set it is that has the Bjorn style dreadnought claw in it? Thinking of getting another dread and converting it into Bjorn, because I've heard a lot of good things about fielding him.
