WIP: Blood Angels Veterans

IronKobra

Recommended Posts

Ok so I am still working on my Moriar conversion and some Vanguard Veterans, but I have also made a start on some of the new Sternguard and Veteran models. I am doing them as a 10 man squad (at least for now) and have made enough progress to at least start a WIP log.

So far, they have been cleaned, primed black, given a base of mechrite red, a wash of 50/50 devlan mud and baal red (which I managed to get to work well this time) and this wash left a much better finish than badab black did on my vanguards...I will probably keep a tub ready at all times now.

Anyway, some pics...

I think I am going to go for gold. I was wondering myself since I am a 2nd ed fanboy I was gonna go for yellow originally, but with the new codex out and making the definitive change the veteran status = gold helm I think it just standardises them a bit. I was really pleased with the gold on my Vanguards too so I think it will bring some uniformity to the look of my slowly progressing force.

Hopefully I wont have much trouble re creating this helm effect:

I have made some progress on these today. When doing the Vanguards, I really struggled to get blood red over mechrite to look even. The solution with these, mix the two! Over my Mechrite and washed basecoat, this is going on really nice and making them look like Blood Angels with minimal effort!

You can see the difference in the brightness of the red here. The 3 on the left have the blood red and mechrite mix over the dark base coat seen on the guys on the right.

Nice work so far mate. I use a very similar colour scheme to you, and after a bit of experimenting, I've found that highlighting with blazing orange and then using a Baal red wash works wonders. Just a suggestion though, your stuff looks great as is.

I've probably asked before, but how did you do the gold?

Thanks Punkfish, I suspect the highlight and wash it the route I will go down with these. I will probably get to the stage my Vanguards are at and then highligh them all in a batch and wash in a batch.

The gold is pretty similar to GW standard recipe really with more washes.

- Black Basecoat

- 50/50 scorched brown & shining gold

- Sepia wash

- Pure shining gold

- Sepia wash

- 50/50 Shining gold & mythril silver.

I havent actually done any actual exteme highlights on the gold or anything yet. To be honest I am afraid too since I think they look great as they are. I will get round to an extreme highlight eventually and then wash with sepia again to tone it down. Sepia I think is just perfect for gold. Really makes it look a rich browny but not old gold.

Did a little more this weekend on these. Just finished this layer of red. This Mechrite/Blood mix is really ticking all the boxes for me! It seems to be going on quite smooth and looking even to me right now without a great deal of effort. These are going much better than my Vanguard squad...Annoyingly, since I prefer the Vanguard models...But I think I will eventually get into doing a 10 man plastic squad kitbashed from the new plasic box sets and veteran models.

Next stage will be hitting the metal work around the model and and deciding on what colours to go for on the robes.

Then ill get into finishing the red plates once I know I wont ruin the layers I have layed down already with darker colours.

Started on the gold today. For some reason the light today was pretty poor and at the same time is washing my pictures out a little. Thats what I get for just using my phone I guess  But anyway, you'll get the idea:

Looking good Brother Ive been thinking about some SternGuard but think I would rather Make my own out of storm bolter mags and bolters apart from the sarge with a PowerFist just because I like that mini.

Keep up the Great work IronKobra

Between work and Moriar and other such things I haven't made as much progress on these as I would like but I have made some foward steps.

Mainly still getting base coats down. I have done the eye lenses. Got into doing the parchments and purity seals too. using the LOTD masterclass on them to see how they look at the end. At the moment I'm not totally convinced.

Here's the pics:

Looking very nice, mate. :tu:

Only thing regrettable is the bad lightning, as their armour really appears orange...although we have seen that your marines always have a nice and deep red. :P

I like the gold you´ve chosen, a deep tone with decent shadows and not too shiny thanks to the washes.

Can´t wait to see them finished!

PS: Ah, a question: What will you build out of the "normal" veterans, meaning the non-Sternguard guys? Thanks!

Yeah, you're right. I'm just using a phone cam, and while it is actually decent quality the flash really does drown out the colours! You can see they aren't nearly as orange in the earlier pics...But it's still only a WIP for now so I guess it's no biggy...One thing the flash does show nice is gems and lenses...I am always surprised at myself when i see how nice they turn out.

As for the build of the non-sternguard...I am just painting the models up really. Not much a gamer these days. In fact i have had only 2 games in the last 10 years :) I suppose if I were to run them in a game would just use them as they are modelled. Too far into painting to begin converting them now haha. think there are 2/3 power weapons and a fist. Maybe run them as an honour guard for Tycho.

Thanks again man! More updates soon as I have actually gotten the next stage of the gold down on the helms already.

Another small update...

Please excuse the photo quailty. Took them at like 2am this morning and cam was quite dark at first een with the flash, so altered on my phone cam...as you will see they aren't ideal pics.

Gotten into the wings with Fenris grey, and will work these up to a blue/white, got the shining gold layers around the models done and washed with sepia and started the robes:

A little update on this blog. I haven't had chance to do much painting as of late but I got a small window on sunday so I thought I would focus on this bareheaded marine, since I have started all the helmets on the rest of the squad but not this guy. This was the first time I have painted flesh in well over 10 years (i opted for helms because I hated painting skin and eyes). And I gave the stubble effect a go too. I am really very happy how it looks after never doing it before ;)

http://i847.photobucket.com/albums/ab36/IronKobra84/DSC00345.jpg

He looks good, all my marines have helms because I don't like painting flesh, but I can still appreciate skill. My only complaint is that he appears to be yawning because I can't tell if you painted his eyes or not.

Haha, I never noticed that! He does look like he is yawning. But yeah you're right it is because I haven't gotten to the eyes just yet. I am DREADING painting the eyes...Really!

Very subtle skin tone mate, I like it a lot - and tricky to do. I find I have to mentally stop myself from applying moar paint!

They're all looking good but paint faster dammit! Want to see the finished article

I'm trying dude really I am haha...I just have this thing of painting in sunlight and here in Liverpool we haven't had it so good for a while! Good news is Moriar is VERY close to being finished -_-
