Warhorse47
Okay, I run a heavy mechanized force of Wolves, but don't like the random appearance and arrival of pods. So I have none in my force. Am I crippling myself by not using them regularly? I'm 5-3 without them. Mithril hound
I dont use them, and i run footslogers. It hasnt been a problem cos i only field heavy hitters, and there are too many to shoot at. MaveriK
whatever works for you wolf brother, and if your happy with your force stay with it. It all comes down to who your facing, against which army and of course luck! i usually use a drop pod or two as a kamekazi force, aimed to slow down or take out a specific or vital squad or vehicle. Antagonis
I think a podded squad is handy to do a little bit of damage where your opponent is squishy, but ultimately what ever you put in the pod is going to get toasted. Hard. I like using pods as a measure of forcing my opponent to shoot what I want them to shoot or dropping the pod infront of devastators or heavy weapon squads to block LoS. Lord Howland Greywolf
A drop poding dread worked well for me for a while until my freinds found ways around it. That said a dread with EA and HF and pod runs at 165pts and can really ruin your opponants day if you have an armourd force and they lack melta weapons. clanfield
i regularly use a grey hunter pack 2 flamers motw in a drop pod always comes off well and realy disruptsjust recently i tried a dread with cc, and 2 hvy flamers this was also very good Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/196777-are-drop-pods-necessary-in-this-era/#findComment-2345093 Share on other sites
Simo429
think it depends on the army you are fighting against the guard and tau they are gerat i was watching the main 'wolf player' in our games club fight a good gaurd player and with 3 pods he ripped them apart in three turns however i would never take them against nids ive got three ready to paint and im looking forward to doing that Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/196777-are-drop-pods-necessary-in-this-era/#findComment-2345110 Share on other sites
Wolf Guard Nostromo
Crippling yourself, no, but they do offer a really different option and entry method for a variety of pack and unit types. I played for years without them and have had success (and failure!) with or without them in this edition. If they aren't for you, don't bother, but they are a nice extra option and playstyle. Having some also helps in playing against them as you learn the limitations... Wolf Lord Karulfr
I use a drop pod to deliver a dreadnought on turn 1. If I were going to use more, I'd probably want at least 3 drop pods but at the moment I only ever use one. WolfGeezer
I find I often have a couple of WG I can't assign after I've got up to the 5 required for the CML or 10 for 2 heavy weapons. Putting 2 guys with combi melta or flamer in a pod can be very effective for 46 pts. Also by mixing what I have in my force I can assign the most appropriate guys depending on the army I'm facing so 2 flamers for hordes, 2 melta for mech or if there's a big MC you need to take out leave a couple of packs with no WG but have 2 plasma and 2 melta drop next to the Hive Tyrant etc and knock him out. Taking a DWL on the pod can be a good idea also if the rest of my army is mech as it is now a priority target for the opponents anti-mech, taking the pressure off my razorbacks and rhinos. Captain Juan Juarez
NEVER use something because you think you are missing out, use it because you have a tactical plan for it or because it gives you an advantage. Schertenleib
Captain Juan, I think that is some of the best advice I have heard! I have personally shelved my drop pod in favor of rhinos. I will on occasion drop one with a dread using MM land speeders to support. Handled a Chaos Defiler quite nicely. Mar Bloodaxe
NEVER use something because you think you are missing out, use it because you have a tactical plan for it or because it gives you an advantage. Great advice. I use pods because I do have a tactical plan for them. Sometimes they may be advantageous to hatch a plan, or they can be used in a defensive manner or with subterfuge. jeremy1391
Ven dread with heavy flamer multi melta EA and a wolf tooth necklace in a pod is nasty, expensive but nasty! i have 10 pods normally run half with deathwind launchers and the other half with just the storm bolter. they are great against mech guard just drop and roast with meltas. against nids and orks the deathwinds will help take some of the pressure off of other units because that strength 5 template has to be taken out!
