Nightlord Chaos Lord with Raptors

Hi Folks,

Having got my Ultramarine Command Squad out of the way my work for this month is to complete a Chaos Lord with Jetpack and 5 Raptors that I've had lying about for a couple of years.

I've just finished reading Soul Hunter - a pretty good Nightlords novel and it's inspired me to get back painting my favourite Chaos marine army. I started on these on Thursday and I've got the miniatures undercoated now (quite a challenge with the rain here) and here's a photo just to prove I'm working away quietly. ;)

There's not much to make out but what I've done so far is use green stuff to give the bases a little more heft as the Raptors are a little top heavy and added a few bits such as barbed wire and resin bits from the 40K basing kits. From using one of my Nightlord Terminators and Hero as a reference these bases match in fairly well. Once good thing about the base coat is that I've missed a couple of mold lines. I'll get those looked at tomorrow. :D

Hi Folks,

Here's an update on my progress. Yesterday I managed to get the moldlines off the offending miniatures and got the basecoat of Necron Abyss followed by a couple of layers of Midnight Blue mixed with a little Regal Blue. The colour is darker than one of my Nightlords but seems to fit considering that the chapter is 'Midnight Clad'.

Now that I've got a good base colour for the whole squad I thought to get stuck in with the Chaos Lord for starters. It's a nice mold but there's a few problems in terms of making this a Nightlord. Due to the amount of icons and trim there's not much space to do the classic lightning. I reckon that I'll just do lightning bolts on a smaller scale and not all over the model. Hopefully that should make it less busy.

Here's a photo so far of the Chaos Lord. The blue of the armour is practically done and I've got the basecolours of the armour trim in Tin Bitz with the chains done in Boltgun metal. What do you think so far?

Hi Folks,

A little more progress. It's funny I've spent probably 3.5 hours on this today and it doesn't look like it. Still I've managed to get the face done, the main armour is ready for the lightning forks and the metallic trim is pretty much sorted. I've still got the claws and feet to do as well as the back pack.

So far I'm fairly pleased with this mini. I wanted to portray the face slightly differently to my loyalist Ultras by having a darker lined appearance to the creases and working with a palette of fortress grey/bleached bone. I highlighted up to Skull white and then introduced a couple of light washes of Leviathan Purple to give an otherworldly appearance.

I think that the lightning will make or break this mini.

With the base I tried using a rust effect with oranges and browns to give a battleworn effect.

Anyhow, enough of me yapping, here's the photos. What do you think?

I've done a little more work on the miniature today. I've got most of the colours done on the whole figure - with the feet and jetpack painted. I still need to work on the lightning claws, skulls on the jetpack, finish off the base and then see where I am before adding any lightning bolts.

Here's a couple of photos - one with the figure with the jetpack and one without. Apologies for the dark pictures - it's been raining here practically all day.

What do you lot think?

You know i've never really liked that model until now. It's never done anything for me, but you've kind of revived him in my eyes. Congrats on that.

It's hard to crit you because you're not done and you also know where you're going. furthermore my only crit would be personal style, and as long as you're happy with yours you're on the right track.

He's looking good.

Cheers fella. I know that there's quite some way to go and better pictures in daylight will help.

Here's my last update of the day. I've done some more on the lightning claws, added a verdigris look to the bronze armour, started work on the skulls and trophy rack and mounted the jetpack. I'm going to fine tune the lightning on the claws during daylight as I'm not fully satisfied with them yet.

The miniature is coming together nicely but now work commitments will mean this won't be finished until the weekend.

So far I'm fairly happy with the figure, it almost seems like it's meant to be a Black Legion Lord as there's so much iconography but hopefully I'm doing it justice.

Hi Folks,

Here's a little update. I've left the Chaos Lord alone for a while so that I can concentrate on the rest of the Raptors.

I've been working on the Raptor Sergeant and most of the work on the miniature is done. I'm fairly happy with the miniature but I think that I need to work on the face a little more as it seems a little too dark. I've deliberately kept the robes dark with a lot of shadows as a brighter style wouldn't have suited a Nightlord. I've used a few techniques carried over from the Chaos Lord - mostly the Verdigras on the Bronze areas and I intend to do the lightning claws in the same manner.

Anyhow, what do you lot think?

Wow,I've fallen in love with the Raptor models again after seeing these. ;)

Lovely work, especially on the metals and the Lords skin, looks brilliant.

My only dislike is the flame on the raptors base, though you mentioned he isnt fully finished,so it could be because you simply haven't gotten round to it yet.

Cheers,

Mike

to tell the truth, when I first saw what model you were using for your lord, I loled so hard. My friends and I call that guy nosferatu-retard, mainly because of how bad the e'vy metal paint job makes him look. I mean, we just pictured the guy sculpting him sayin "yeah, 3 teeth is the perfect number to fill his entire mouth" and then modeling him being chained to the ground. But all jokes aside, you made him look respectable, and for that you should be awarded some kind of metal. You have taken, IMHO, one of the worst models GW sells and made it look good, I applaud your skill sir

Hi Folks,

Here's a mini update on the Raptors. I've practically finished my Raptor Sergeant apart from the lightning bolts. I've got a couple of comparison shots with the Chaos Lord just to show the similarities between the figures to tie them into the squad.

The only hassle I've had with the Raptor Sergeant is that the molding I had appears to be missing some detail so the face and some other parts aren't as sharp as the Chaos Lord. Still, I'm happy with how it looks overall.

Hi Folks,

I did a bit of work on the third Raptor last night and this morning and here's a couple of quick photos to show progress. I've decided that each of the Raptor troops will have bone white helmets to tie in with their fluff a bit more and break up the dark blue. I've continued using the verdigras technique on the Tin Bitz trim as it's a good way of adding a little more colour. I've also decided to leave the lightning bolts until last so that I get a bit of consistency.

If I'm able to get stuck in with these I should have this Raptor and a fourth one done by tomorrow. Pictures to follow soon.

What do you reckon so far?

Hi Folks,

I had a chance to get stuck in with the figures today and spent a bit of time getting the remaining Raptors up to a standard where (hopefully) next weekend I can have them ready for the lightning bolts. The first shot shows the three nearly ready Raptors whilst the second shot just shows where I am with the other two. Since this photo I managed to get the trim on one of the final two painted and washed.

Hi Folks,

I finally got these Nightlords done today. Overall I'm pretty pleased with them and the odd forks of lightning really add some interest on these dark looking miniatures. The flame-looking things on the base were annoying and a little miscast so I just added a little red and orange to give a kind of flame/smoke theme.

Having spent some time with these models I do like them but I found that there were parts of the miniatures which had lost some detail and areas where they were a little miscast - hopefully I did them proud.

What do you folk think?
