Sky Wolves Fury: Planetstrike Battle Recap

Ok so I don't feel up to a full Battle Report, but I should mention today's game. I showed up at my local GW for a Planetstrike game supposed to herald the new Blood Angels Codex. The table was widely spread, 6 objectives on the table and I wound up on the Attackers side. The Attackers was a wide mix of three Space Marines, one Blood Angel, a Grey Knight and two Space Wolves armies. Seeing the number of vehicles the other players had I decided to roll with numbers and wound up picking the following as my Army:

Rune Priest

-Terminator Armor, Jaws of the World Wolf, Living Lightning

10 Grey Hunters

-Wolf Guard with Power Fist, Power Fist, Melta Gun

10 Grey Hunters

-Wolf Guard with Power Fist, Power Fist, Melta Gun

10 Grey Hunters

-Power Fist, 2 Plasma Guns

10 Grey Hunters

-Power Fist, 2 Melta Guns

16 Blood Claws

-Wolf Guard with Power Fist, Power Weapon, 2 Flamers

16 Blood Claws

-Wolf Guard with Power Fist, Power Weapon, 2 Flamers

and... that was it. 72 Troops and 1 HQ. I haven't really ever used my Rune Priest before so it was interresting.

Facing us were Necrons, Tyranids, Orks, Chaos Space Marines, Grey Knights, Eldar and Traitor Imperial Guard.

All told the game was really interresting but somewhat annoying. Turn 1 I get 3 units of Grey Hunters and 1 of the Blood Claws on the field and the Rune Priest. The Priest went with the Blood Claws while the Grey Hunters formed up behind some Blood Angels and along with the other Space Wolf army that was also infantry heavy.

The table had 6 objectives spread evenly across the entire 12 foot length.

Combat began in earnest, damaging a Demolisher and charging into an 18 strong Ork Boyz squad with the Blood Claws and butchering them. Then the iritation began, starting with the Doom of Malantai showing up behind our lines and between the Defender and Attacker shooting phases causing more than 30 kills on the attacking Space Marines, 20 of them from my Grey Hunters before it went down to a single Melta Gun shot. I now really don't like that thing. The attackers pulled other shenanigans with Trygon's, a Tervigone, Wraith Lords and Grey Knights appearing from reserve to cause havoc.

So next turn my last two squads arrive and the Grey Hunters target the newly arrived squad of Grey Knights while my Blood Claws initiate a multi-charge into the Tervigon and it's nearby Gaunts, in the end a handful of Gaunts survived and the Tervigone was ripped to shreds. The Grey Knights were taken down to a single Justicar and inflicted just one cassualty while the Blood Claws suffered none. My other Blood Claw unit that had finished with the Orks the previous Turn moved its sights to a Plague Marine unit and a Chaos Lord. 4 of the 7 Plague marines went down and they killed 3 Blood Claws. My other Grey Hunters finished destroying the Demolisher and moved towards and secured a nearby objective.

Next round my Rune Priest zoinked the Chaos Lord with his Force Weapon and the Blood Claws finished off the Plague Marines, the other squad finished off the Gaunts and my Grey Hunters killed the Justicar. Despite a Necron Wraith charging the Grey Hunters and Blood Claw units both were taken down easily enough. My Blood Claws fighting the Gaunts consolidated towards a fight with a newly arrived C'Tan nearby while the Grey Hunters hoofed it towards the 3rd Objective on the left side of the table, a now empty Bastion.

The other Space Wolf player in concert with some Crimson Fists wiped out the Traitor Guard and last of the Chaos Marines, capturing the leftmost objective and further securing the 2nd objective.

The game was coming to a close with a number of the enemy players wiped off the board they packed up and left leaving their comrades to finish the fight. My unit destroyed by the Doom of Malantai came back due to the game rules in play and Deep Struck to rapid fire some Grey Knights, causing 3 cassualties to the unit and landing close enough to secure the 2nd Objective on the right half of the board. My Blood Claws charged into combat with the C'Tan along with some allied Grey Knights and Pedro Kantor, at the same time getting close enough to the 4th Objective near the center of the board to capture it. The Wolf Guard Pack leader managed to inflict 2 wounds on the Deceiver while Pedro knocked off another and the Deciever killed a Death Company Dreadnaught. My Grey Hunters who had killed the Grey Knights moved and ran within 2 inches of the 3rd objective, capturing it.

As a grand finale, one of the Space Marine armies moved a Land Raider into capture range of the 6th Objective and some Aurora Chapter Terminators busted the objective bunker open and lured the Ork Ardboyz inside into attacking them.

The Attackers had now effectively captured all 6 objectives. The leftmost 1st Objective held by 2 Grey Hunter units and two squads of Crimson Fists, the 2nd held by 2 low strength Grey Hunters units of mine, and 2 more Grey Hunters units from the other Space Wolf army. The 3rd was held by a squad of my Grey Hunters and a unit of Long Fangs from the other Space Wolf army. The 4th had my Blood Claws, Grey Knight Terminators, and 2 Dreadnaughts all holding it and embattled with the Deciever. The 5th was held by a unit of my Grey Hunters a unit of Death Company and a Land Raider Crusader while the 6th was held by a Land Raider and Aurora Chapter Terminators.

The Defenders had to retake at least 3 objectives in the 3rd and Final turn and they gave it a valiant effort. With so many players wiped out and so doomed they were allowed to bring back all their dead forces and it still wasn't enough. 2 squads of Grey Knight Terminators and a squad of Grey Knights deployed near the 3rd Objective, killed the Long Fangs but despite being helped by 3 Wraiths could not kill all 8 of my Grey Hunters, with 3 left and at the objective it was still held. The C'Tan went down to Power Fist attacks and the Blood Claws consolidated further onto the 4th Objective. A returned Monolith, another unit of Grey Knight Terminators and a great many Orks all tried to take the 6th Bunker Objective and the 5th Landing Pad Objective but both failed. The Aurora Chapter Terminators were killed but despite all efforts the Ultramarines Land Raider just wouldn't die. The Grey Knights tried to shift my Grey Hunters and Death Company but despite killing 2 of my Grey Hunters and trying to Charge Both squads they wound up being torn apart by the Death Company and both squads consolidated even further onto the Skyshield. Lastly a unit of Deffkopta's and a Deff Dread tried to shift the Grey Hunters off the 1st Land Raider to the left of the field but were all taken out in Close Combat.

So in the end the attackers held all 6 Objectives, my Space Wolves held fully 4 of the Objectives and my army had achieved a great deal during the battle. Usually my army winds up far from the hard fighting in large Planetstrike or Apocalypse games at the GW but this time having just taken lots and lots of troops I had marines to throw at many combats across the board and it worked. In particular I managed to take out quite a few juicy targets, some of the glory for killing the C'Tan Deciever, the Doom of Malantai, a Leman Russ Demolisher, Tervigon, Terminator Chaos Lord and 4 Objective Captures, not a bad showing all told I think.

Funnily enough I lost 6 of my 32 Blood Claws but 31 of 50 Grey Hunters (counting one squad twice). The reckless young-uns had far fewer cassualties all told but also wound up in combat the most... wierd.

A Crushing Victory to the Sons of Russ!

That is because no one takes the blood claws seriously... well first game atleast. Blood claws on the move lead by a wolf priest is full of crazy, awesome and win.

I still maintain that a maxed squad of Blood claws with a wolf priest in a Land Raider Crusader is the best thing in 40k. I call it "The Feild Trip" my buddies call it "The Short Bus".

My buddies call it "Oh my God, it's THEM again!" :D
