atrox_futurus
I can't quite remember all the details about the Space Wolves "Red Sleep" stage. I know that they enter the red sleep (or red dream?) when they are seriously wounded, but I can't quite remember all the details about it. I'm also pretty sure that you can come out of it (like Berek Thunderfist did in the Ragnar books) but if anyone has some facts they'd like to share with me that would be stellar. Cheers, atrox_futurus Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/196899-the-red-sleep/ Share on other sites
Vash113
It's just the Space Wolf way of saying "suspended animation" caused by the Sus-An Membrane, one of the Astartes 19 Implants. the Sus-An Membrane allows Space Marines to enter a state of hibernation, where they quite literally shut down their bodies and minds except for the most extremely basic of functions and in this way can survive even some of the most horrific wounds for... years at a time. It cannot be come out of voluntarily, it takes the skill of an Apothecary, or in the case of the Space Wolves a Wolf Priest, for the marine to be revived. In the case of Berek Thunderfist his suspended animation or "Red Sleep" was caused and influenced by sorcery, when the spell that was holding him in its thrall was broken he was able to wake, but that is not normally the case with the Red Sleep. The_Betrayed_Spacewolf
its pretty much a self induced coma? (maybe?) an automated defense that tries to keep maximum damage to a minimum if that makes any sense. Vash113
its pretty much a self induced coma? (maybe?) an automated defense that tries to keep maximum damage to a minimum if that makes any sense. More than a coma, the Marine's body literally shuts down, shields itself against vacuum and hazardous environments, slows down blood flow and breathing until the Marine to all intents and purposes appears to be dead... but he's not, and with the skill of an Apothecary can sometimes be revived. In essence it's not to prevent damage, extreme damage is what causes it to kick in, its to slow down the effect of the damage and buy time for the Marine to be "repaired" by the Chapter's Apothecaries. The longest period a Marine was successfully revived from was a Dark Angel brought back after 350 odd years in suspension if I recall correctly. atrox_futurus
Alright, I couldn't quite remember, since the only time I really heard about it was in the Ragnar series, and I didn't want to have to skim through 6 books to find the info. Many thanks to both Vash and the Betrayed, this information will help me greatly. P.S. 350 years? That's ridiculous.....but epic! The_Betrayed_Spacewolf
i know it takes part in the latest book where ragnar and group start attacking rebel barracks and use melta charges on pressurized doors (or something to that accord) anyway when the melta charge goes off pretty much anything inside dies. one of the blood claws is too close and gets injured pretty badly and is forced into the red sleep.
