Space Wolves Gameplay

Ranwulf

Recommended Posts

Hi guys!

I really like Space Wolves fluff and style, now, I was wondering starting a SW army. You might think :"You just got your new codex BA player, why would you want to make a new army now?", well, thing is, as you can very well tell by my Screen name, I love wolves. Dogs, Akitas, Huskies, even as a kid I cherred up to the Big Bad Wolf eat the piggies. But seriously, I want to make sure before keep buying more stuff for my BA, to see if I rather play the Sons of Russ, so I have a few questions for you guys:

1)What style of gameplay you can use with the SW?

2)How many models, and which, would I need to buy to start an 1500 army?

3)Drinking vodka instead of beer would offend my minis?

4)Ragnar is a cool awesome character, what types of gameplay I can achieve with him?

5)Logan looks AWESOME in combat, but what types of gameplay I can achieve with him?

6)Long Fangs makes me thrill. Seriously. I love Devastator and the thought of using the same squad to kill two differente things is awesome, but I wanna know, how effective they are?

7)Last question, how resilient is a SW army? Marine resilient? Plaguemarine Resilient? Imperial Guard resilient? (I mean, does the models die a lot?)

I would love to read what the SW players thinks about their own armies, so maybe I could start one myself!

Thanks for your attention.

Hate to bring this up again;

Thats just how I play and what my Army is comprised of.

Best Thing about Long fangs is that they are cheap - but there ain't enough of them to soak up lots of damage.

Resilience is down you what you as a player exposed your units to, there resilient as any other space marines from shooting, but are the dogs go-nads in combat

Ragnar - You want him in Land Raider Crusader with pack of Blood Claws and maybe Wolf Priest - for re-rolls.

You have to decide, whether You want to footslog, droppod or mech - all these variants are viable with Space Wolves. Wolve are very versatile and flexible as You probably noticed.

Now what You will need:

two packs of Grey Hunters with melta, wolf standard and pw/mark of wulfen. Maybe three packs or a pack of Blood Claws as the third troops choice.

A pack of Wolf Guard - termies and PA - the latter for the GH pack leaders with powerfists and combimeltas.

Long Fangs - with ML and LC, maybe joined by Cyclone Missile Launcher Wolf Guard.

Rune Priest

Transports - either Rhinos or Droppods. Better buy Razorback kit and dont ever glue the top hatch, because afterwards You can easily switch between two variants.

Dreads, Wolf Scouts, bikers, speeders - they all come along Your playstyle - some players don't like scouts, I love them.

But two packs of GH and a Rune Priest are a good start.

I'm sure, Space Wolves would love vodka mixed with beer :) :) :) Don't try this at home :P

1)What style of gameplay you can use with the SW?

Like any marines Space Wolves can run footslogging, mechanised, you can do a "Wolfwing" that is an army of all or mostly Wolf Guard (including Terminators) led by Logan Grimnar. The Space Wolves make a potent close combat force, but Grey Hunters are very versatile and can form a decent shooting base as well as solid counter-assault. The style of you're army really reflects what you want it to be or simply your own personality.

2)How many models, and which, would I need to buy to start an 1500 army?

That really depends, but in general a Wolf Lord/Battle Leader and 2 Grey Hunters packs work fine. I find that the new SW boxes are almost too full of detail and I like to water them down. A Space Wolf box, Tactical Squad box and Space Marine Commander would give you a decent starting force. Or you could get a Marine Battleforce and a box of Space Wolves, the Space Wolf box has tons and tons of bits, more than enough to spread around to multiple other squads of marines. Grey Hunters are solid troops that should form the backbone of almost every Space Wolf force and what you use in addition to you're Grey Hunters is what helps to define the army.

3)Drinking vodka instead of beer would offend my minis?

I sincerely doubt that. :)

4)Ragnar is a cool awesome character, what types of gameplay I can achieve with him?

Ragnar is a potent assault leader, usually best employed leading a squad of Grey Hunters or Wolf Guard and granting them more attacks on the charge.

5)Logan looks AWESOME in combat, but what types of gameplay I can achieve with him?

Logan is a potent killing machine, but more importantly he allows Wolf Guard to be taken as troops, allowing for an all Terminator Army if you want.

6)Long Fangs makes me thrill. Seriously. I love Devastator and the thought of using the same squad to kill two differente things is awesome, but I wanna know, how effective they are?

Long Fangs can be vulnerable since they have no ablative wounds, but their split fire ability is very nice and they aren't that common, especially if you had multiple packs you're opponents may not know how to deal with them or get rid of them.

7)Last question, how resilient is a SW army? Marine resilient? Plaguemarine Resilient? Imperial Guard resilient? (I mean, does the models die a lot?)

Space Wolves are Marines, pretty much all Marine armies are equally resilient.

I would love to read what the SW players thinks about their own armies, so maybe I could start one myself!

If you like the Space Wolves or the idea in general, by all means. I much prefere having multiple armies, keeps things interresting.

Ranwulf(which means Wolf Shield)

Ok, let's get started shall we, vampire? *preparing stakes and lighter*

1. Everything you can dream of. Starting from hammering the skies with pods, striking like a deathwing, the wolves tide, full armor assault.. Yea, I said EVERYTHING. (Almost everything..)

2. Cores is what you need. But first, we want to know what you want to choose as HQ, although a couple of grey hunters won't hurt.

3. Vodka? Wanna try wine? <_<

4. Think like him. See an opponent, point his soon-to-be squadmates, and point at soon-to-be-dead bad guys. He'll toast them. (No big things tho! Like Carnifex. You DON'T want to charge it.)

5. Logan. Depends on which squad you attach him with due to his special rule. All terminator army is also viable with him.

6. Long Fangs is the only unit capable of using heavy weapons. You will want them, you will like them, and you will use them (effectively!)

7. We're as resilient as the other Marines. The different is Counter-attack. You know the rest.

For Russ, for the wolftime, we drink and cheers! Huraa!!

6. Long Fangs is the only unit capable of using heavy weapons. You will want them, you will like them, and you will use them (effectively!)

Although not easy to accomplish remember you can attach a WG Pack Leader with Heavy weapon to a bC, LF, or GH Pack.

i always back my long fangs up with a pred ac/lc i find it very usefull ,also speeders with meltas are a good anti armour unit ,there both cheap

grey hunters basicly are way much more usefull than tacs (counter attack is fine)

bloodclaws scare the hell out of people i like a wolf priest here as they hit usaly infantry on a 3+

ragnar what can i say iv had a blackmaine company scince 92 he never disapoints

the codex has great senergie with many many options like fenris wolf packs and lone wolves and dont forget the wolf scouts all very nice

1)What style of gameplay you can use with the SW?

Space Wolves favor flexible play, and have both strong shooting and strong assault to facilitate this. Grey Hunters exemplify this the most - they carry bolters, bolt pistols, AND CCWs, making them good at both shooting and assault, so with counter attack, whether they're charging or the ones being charged they usually always have 3 attacks each. They're tacticals and assault marines rolled into one, and oh-so-cheap for what they do.

They can take two special weapons to make them powerful shooters, or you can forgo the second special weapon, and add a WG with a second special CCW to enhance their assault prowness.

Rune Priests are among the best psykers in the game, and have a variety of support powers that sure your army stays flexible.

2)How many models, and which, would I need to buy to start an 1500 army?

A good foundation for a 1500 point force I find is 30 Greyhunters and a Rune Priest, which usually accounts for just under half the army list. From there - you can start adding toys, from additional super HQs, to long fangs, to cavalry, tanks, etcetera.

3)Drinking vodka instead of beer would offend my minis?

Better then me - I'm usually sober.

4)Ragnar is a cool awesome character, what types of gameplay I can achieve with him?

Ragnar is huge assault character, with an assault multiplier that extends to the squad he's with. He grants the unit he joins gets D3 attacks on the charge instead of the usual one (and if you attach him to Grey Hunters and take the Wolf Standard, you can re-roll the result of 1!). He also grants his unit Furious charge, and once per a game, he can extend furious charge to all space wolves units within 12 inches. He's basically the guy you want to stick in a land raider and assault something with.

5)Logan looks AWESOME in combat, but what types of gameplay I can achieve with him?

Logan is pretty decent in close combat, but I find his true strength is in the squad he's attached to. His abilities go back to enhancing one thing: making Space Wolves flexible. The first thing he does is make all Wolf Guard troops - this includes Wolf Guard in TDA, and you will often see him surrounded by terminators. The second thing he does is grants the squad he's attached to a single special rule at the start of every player turn - fearless, relentless, tank hunter, or preferred enemy (He also grants stubborn automatically). Because of this, you the squad he's attached to is on best kitted out to handle a bunch of different roles, which is pretty easy to do with Wolfguard wargear options.

An alternate strategy I like to do is to field him with Greyhunters and put them in a land raider - you can choose to make them relentless at the start of the turn to dwindle a high initiative target before you assault, or tank hunters if you really need to murder a tank, or preferred enemy if you just want to assault something.

6)Long Fangs makes me thrill. Seriously. I love Devastator and the thought of using the same squad to kill two differente things is awesome, but I wanna know, how effective they are?

Very effective, but more so because they are very inexpensive compared to devastators and can bring more heavy weapons then usually (an extra gun are two, plus the ability to attach a terminator leader with a terminator heavy weapon). I don't split their fire too much because I prefer to concentrate my fire.

7)Last question, how resilient is a SW army? Marine resilient? Plaguemarine Resilient? Imperial Guard resilient?

Mostly marine resilient, though with things like standards and counter attack, they handle assault better. Basically, because they all have Counter Attack, you'll find unless your opponent has a higher initiative, no one really wants to assault you. And when they do get assaulted, they hit back very hard.

Our HQs, however, are much more durable then marine HQs because of the ability to take two things: 1. the thunderwolf mount. This grants your HQ for-realz toughness 5, and makes it so only s10 weapons can instant death you. 2. Saga of the Bear. this, quite simply, grants eternal warrior, so no one will be instant deathing you...

T5 Thunderwolf Cavalry and bare-bones-cheap terminators help our durability as well, though our storm shield is usually more expensive...

Not gonna lie, Pretty much everyone has picked it to the bone. if you have read up to my post you have all the options read.

but i will tell you my favourite thing about the space wolves. Hq choices!! in this i am including arjac because of his general awesomeness and Lukas cus if you kill a titan just by dieing beside it you should be Hq status.

My point is the hq choices are endless and most of the combos in the army come from an hq leading a pack of this or that. You can go pre loaded hqs which completly rock, like Logan Ragnar Njal or Bjorn, OR you can make up your own and make him to your fluff like i did. I made Erik Morkai. He is badass.

So when i think about making a space wolves list I think......Which hq should i test out now. or which would be the best to bring this time around.

One more plus....Grey hunters are so versitile it blows me socks off.
