Karl The Jarl
So I decided to buy the new Battle Missions book yesterday along with the BA codex. Battle Missions for more scenarios and the BA 'dex for some new reading on the throne. A friend of mine plays BA and we decided on a 1500 pt game using a new mission. My list: HQ Canis Wolf Priest - Preferred Enemy: Infantry - Melta Bombs - WTN - Saga of the Beastslayer WGBL - Frostblade - Melta Bombs - WTN Troops Fenrisian Wolf Pack x 15 Grey Hunters x10 - Melta Gun x2 - Power Weapon Grey Hunters x10 - Plasma Gun x2 - Power Fist Blood Claws x9 - Power Fist - Rhino Blood Claws x9 - Power Fist - Rhino Heavy Vindicator Long Fangs x3 - Plasma Gun - Missile Launcher x2 Total: 1500 His list: HQ Dante Elite Sternguard x9 - Combi-melta x4 - Power Fist - Drop Pod Corbulo Furioso - Librarian Upgrade: Shield of Sanguinius, Wings of Sanguinius Troops Tactical Squad x10 - Melta Gun - Power Fist - Rhino Tactical Squad x10 - Melta Gun - Rhino Assault Squad x10 - Power Fist Total: 1500 Canis paired up with the wolf pack, the WGBL and Wolf Priest joined the Blood Claws. Dante joined the Assault Squad; Corbulo joined the Sternguard, who in turn broke into combat squads upon landing. We picked a mission by rolling 2d6, one dice represented 10s and one represented 1s. The result was a 4 and 4, the scenario was Ambush in the Necron section. We rolled to see who would be the "Necrons" and who would be the "Enemy". He won the roll off so he became the "Necrons". Deployment for me was simple, I had to find the center of the short edge and measure 6" each way for a total of 12". This 12" ran the length of the long edge. I had to deploy in a column, starting from the back: Rhino/ Blood Claws and WGBL, Rhino/ Blood Claws and Wolf Priest, Long Fangs, Wolf Pack with Canis, Vindicator, Grey Hunters/Melta, Grey Hunters/ Plasma. I set up my Rhinos so that the rear armor was not exposed. I'd say I had about a foot on both sides, give or take, left over. He could deploy anywhere outside of the 12". If you were looking from the rear of my army, he deployed as follows: On the left side about about 12" from Canis he deployed a Rhino. To the right of Canis, about 8" he deployed the other Rhino. Both were in the open. To the right of my Grey Hunters/Plasma, he deployed an Assault Squad/Dante and the Librarian Dreadnought almost 18" away behind a hill. For terrain we used hills and trees. They were deployed as follows, starting from the SW Rhino: Left side; Trees by the Rhino, Hill by the Long Fangs, Hill by the Grey Hunters/Melta. To the right side; Trees by both Rhinos about 5" away, long hill behind the about 3", stretching all the way to the front of the Vindicator, Hill about 6" away from Grey Hunters/Melta stretching all the way to the top of the Grey Hunters/Plasma. I hope this gives you some sort of visual, next time I'll try to include pictures. The Victory Conditions were kill points. My army had 12 kp worth and his had 11 kp worth, so it was about even. To determine who had first turn he rolled a d6. 4 or more he goes first, he rolled a 3! First Turn: The direction I'm looking onto the board from will be from the short side closest to the rear Rhino. SW: Movement: I move both Grey Hunter squads 6" towards the Rhino on the left. The Vindicator moves into position so he can see the Assault Squad/ Dante. Canis and the Wolves moved toward the Rhino on the right. Shooting: The Grey Hunters with the Meltaguns open fire on the Rhino, only one was within the 6". The Rhino blows up! He loses a marine and fails a pinning test. The Long Fangs fire on the same squad. I used to Frags, both hit causing several wounds but only loses another marine. The Long Fang Pack Leader fires a shot from the Plasma Gun, I roll a 1 and then I roll another 1. The Vindicator takes a shot at the Assault Squad/Dante and scatters way too far away! Assault: Grey Hunters/Melta attempt to assault the squad but fail the difficult terrain test since the marines were in a crater that was a Rhino. Canis and the Wolves assault the other Rhino, completely surrounding it. Canis immobilized it and the Wolves also immobilized it twice, the Rhino is destroyed and the Marines can not get out. BA: Movement: Brings in a Drop Pod southeast of the rear Rhino about 6" and scatters right next the both Rhinos on their right side. Gets out into the woods and Combat squads the Sternguard. Corbulo is with the 4 that are closest to the Rhino with the WGBL. The Librarian Dreadnought takes a test for the Wings and passes Moves right in front of the Vindicator. The Assault Squad/Dante move towards Canis and the Wolves. Shooting: The Sternguard squad both open fire on the Rhinos, blowing both up. The Bloodclaws/WGBL lose 1 and the Bloodclaws/Wolf Priest lose two. Both squads pass their pinning tests. Assault: The Librarian Dreadnought assaults the Vindicator and blows it up. The Assault Sqaud/Dante assault Canis/Wolves. I fail the ld check for counter-attack and he had chosen Canis at the beginning of the game to have -1 WS, W,I and A. Canis passed the ld check for the Death Mask. Dante puts on wound on Canis. The wolves attack the Assault Squad killing 5 and Canis put 2 wounds on Dante. The Assault Squad put 3 wounds on the Wolves, I make all 3 saves! He fails his ld check, I catch him and he loses 1 more to No Retreat. KP for SW: 3 KP for BA: 3 Turn Two: SW: Movement: Grey Hunters/Melta move toward the Librarian Dreadnought. Grey Hunters/Plasma move toward the pinned Marine squad. Blood Claws/Wolf Priest take a difficult terrain test and move within 1" of the 5 Sternguard. Blood Claws/WGBL take a difficult terrain test and move within 1" of the 4 Sternguard and Corbulo. Shooting: Grey Hunters/Melta fire on the Dreadnought and he takes a psychic test and passes for the Shield and misses the save. The Grey Hunters only manage to stun him. Grey Hunters/Plasma open fire on the pinned Marines, they were within 12" so they rapid fired killing 2 more Marines. Long Fangs fire two Krak Missiles at the Dreadnought, gets a pen but this time the Dreadnought makes his save. The Bloodclaws/WGBL fire upon the Sternguard/Corbulo causing two wounds, he fails 1 save but uses FNP and makes the second one. The Bloodclaws/Wolf Priest fire on the other Sternguard causing three wounds, he saves all 3. Assault: Both Bloodclaw Squads with their leaders pass their difficult terrain tests and make it into combat with the Sternguard Squads. I'm going to start with the Bloodclaw/WGBL squad first. Corbulo and the WGBL strike first both putting a wound on each other. His Sternguard kill 3 Bloodclaws and my Bloodclaws kill 1 Sternguard. My powerfist Bloodclaw went after Corbulo but missed. I lose combat, fail a check and he catches me, I lose two more to No Retreat. The Bloodclaws/Wolf Priest assault the other Sternguard. He kills two Bloodclaws and I wipe him out. I move 1" towards the other Sternguard. Canis and the Wolves continue to fight it out with Dante and the Assault Squad. Dante kills Canis, while the Wolves kill 2 more Assault Marines. The Marines kill no Wolves. Dante fails his ld test again and runs 8" toward the hills. One Marine fails the dangerous terrain test, leaving only the Sergeant and Dante at the top of the hill. The Wolves move within 2" of Dante and the Sergeant. At this point it's starting to get epic. BA second turn: Movement: He moved the previously pinned Marine squad out from the crater towards the Long Fangs. Shooting: The previously pinned Marines fire on the Long Fangs cause 4 wounds, I make all the saves. Assault: Dante and the Sergeant assault the Wolves, I fail to counter-attack. He kills five Wolves. I kill the Sergeant and put another wound on Dante. I lose the fight, I run and I get caught. Dante finally takes out the Wolves for the moral victory. The WGBL and Corbulo swing away I kill a Sternguard and Corbulo misses. My Bloodclaws do nothing and his Sternguard kill 1 Bloodclaw. The assault was a tie and we stay locked up. KP for SW: 5 KP for BA: 5 Turn Three: SW: Movement: Grey Hunters/Plasma move towards the previously pinned Tactical Squad. Grey Hunters/Melta take a difficult terrain test and move close enough to the Dreadnought so both Meltas are in 2d6 range. Bloodclaws/Wolf Priest take difficult terrain test and move within 1" of the Sternguard/Corbulo. Shooting: Grey Hunters/Melta open fire on the Dreadnought and the Dreadnought Perils of the Warp so he glances himself. The result was a 6 so he immobilizes himself. The Grey Hunters get two pens and the result was a 1 and a 6. The Dreadnought blows up hitting the whole squad and killing 1. The Long Fangs were thinking about firing at Dante but couldn't see him because he was behind a wrecked Rhino. Instead they fired on the previously pinned Marine squad with Kraks, killing 1. Assault: The Grey Hunters/Plasma attack the previously pinned Marines. We go at the same time, he kills none and I wipe out the entire squad. I move 1" towards Dante. The Bloodclaws/Wolf Priest join their brothers to finish off Corbulo and the Sternguard. His squad kill nothing. I position the Bloodclaws around the Drop Pod. BA Turn Three: Movement: He moves Dante within 6" of the Long Fangs. Shooting: Nothing Happens Assault: He charges the Long Fangs killing both of them. KP for SW: 9 KP for BA: 6 Turn Four: SW: Movement: The Grey Hunter/Plasma move towards Dante. Shooting: Grey Hunters/Plasma fire on Dante and kill him. Assault: The Wolf Priest and WGBL assault the Drop Pod blowing it up with their Melta Bombs. The game ends since the BA have nothing left. KP for SW: 11 KP for BA: 6 This was a really fun game, this was the first time using the Battle Missions book and it turned out to be really fun. The Fen. Wolves did a great job and were extremely effective with Canis. Hopefully next time I play a game I'll remember to bring a camera. Hope you all enjoyed! wolf363839
Dude, sounds like an awesome game. I'm a huge fan of Battle Missions, sounds like the mission you played was really interesting. And its great to see our well-rounded SWs kick some BA ass! What do you think of Dante and the Librarian Dread? Karl The Jarl
In my opinion and I only play SW; Almost any Independent Character with a WTN and a power weapon/fist of some sort can deal with him. Dante will usually always strike first so next time I plan on taking weapons that will cause instant death and better protection. I think if used differently as opposed to how he was played in that game, he could be really dangerous. I actually worried more about the Dreadnought, 13 front armor is tough to crack in close combat with the infantry I had. I really wasn't concerned about his powers but reading through the list of available powers, I may consider taking a Rune Priest next time. wolf363839
Good to know, thanks. I typically include a Runepriest in a Rhino w/ GH, so he can use Stormcaller and/or Living Lightning from inside the transport. Works pretty well. Guess the only thing to do with the Dreads is to shoot the crap out of them, especially when they get close. He is near a enemy unit so he cannot uses ATSKNF, isn't it? Greetings P.S. Instant death for the win! My experiences... the new Blood Angles characters and elite hand it out - only our uber elite can hope to deal with them... Nice batrep btw, always appreciated :) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/196966-sw-vs-ba-battle-report/#findComment-2347832 Share on other sites
