Steampunk Marine

Recommended Posts

Hey all,

A little work in progress of my steampunk marine. This project started a couple of years ago, with me trying to scratchbuild an entire model. I hit falling blocks at the legs and arms and gave up, but I inherited a broken assualt marine from a mate, and decided to make a hybrid model. After I put this up it's going to be based and sprayed. I'm thinking of doing a colour scheme like my Adeptus Mikalikus (orangy brown with extreme highlights), with the inevitable 'brassy bits' that make something steampunk.

The (storm) bolter is a bolt pistol smoothed down and then bulked out with plasticard. The helmet is plastic tubing with 1.6mm solid tube as goggles (a personal favourite) and then detailed with strips of 0.2mm plasticard. Body is layered tubing.

The sword is a 1mm plasticard, with added bits for the hilt and guard. it's not actually glued on, meaning if I really wanted to I can do a weapon swap, relying on the tight fit between the hand and the hilt.

the back pack was made to look like a cross between an organ and a funnel. I think it worked...

Critiscms welcome.

Well first coat is on, but cold weather is making it dry slow.

Thanks for the comments! I've looked at warmachine before (not for inspiration for this guy, mind. He evolved very organically) but their prices are even greater than games workshop's!

Unfortunately my Gs skills are poor, and my putty has probably gone hard. That's why I work with plasticard. No sculpting, just cutting, and it doesn't go off.

I am contemplating using it to make armour joints in legs (more on that when I get there :tu:)

It's currently sprayed, I'll get some pics up this evening/afternoon.

Well I've started painting

i'm a little dissapointed, TBh. It all seems too smooth, the best way I can describe it is that it looks like someone in pyjamas. I'm going to follow the scheme through to the end, see if it turnsout okay. If not, I'll strip the paint and start again. Comments?

Rivets? Would break up the smooth areas and give extra steampunkness (not a word).

Or you could try adding another colour to some parts for visual interest. Maybe some leather straps as well?
