Wolf Scout Kill Team with Sparta Variant Land Speeder

Recommended Posts

Hi Brothers, I thought I'd share some photos of my current project with you. Having borrowed my brother's copy of the Battle Missions book, I read the Kill Team rules and thought, wow, fast game, small army, I might even maintain interest long enough to get everything painted :D

So I had a think about what I'd like to make that I could use in Kill Team. Then I searched through my stuff to find things that weren't being used for something else. I eventually settled on a unit of Wolf Scouts accompanied by a Land Speeder Tornado. All my eggs in one basket? That's probably a topic for another thread, but I thought fluff wise it'd be quite cool, and with it only being six mini's shouldn't take long to get done.

Some of you will remember the Wolf Scout I did a while ago, well I'm using him, but I needed to come up with four more:

they're only headless till I did out the rest of my Wolf Scout heads. The three with gaps at their waists are awaiting G/S, but since their necks need it too, I thought I'd wait till I find the heads...

As for the Tornado, well I had a really old plastic Landspeeder from 3rd edition knocking about, so I chucked in a tub of Mr Muscle and set about trawling bits sites to find out what I needed. But I'm broke just now (as always) so instead of buying the parts for the tornado launchers, I've converted them. I also didn't think having a heavy flamer in front of the gunner would work either, so it's going underslung and the gunner will get a nice control console so he can fire all the weapons, so this is how the Sparta Variant Tornado looks just now:

I still need to get some bits and pieces for it, so it'll look a little different than it already does. Oh and I glued the horizontal stabiliser fins back on last night, but I don't have photos of that yet I'm afraid.

Little bit of Fluff on the Spartan Variant Tornado Pattern Land Speeder :

This was a very short lived variant of the tornado as it was quickly realised that the back blast from the missiles launching would hit the cockpit as they flew past. Additional plating was added to some of the existing Spartan Variants, but full Power Armour provides more than adequate potection anyway. That's my excuse and I'm sticking to it :)

@ wargamingbunker: glad you're on board mate, it's all the nicer to have someone you can trust to give honest feedback :P.

@ sugar-free: yeah, I'm making them taller as I want them to look like fully fledged marines in scout armour, not pre/slightly post-pubescent teens like vanilla scouts are. I think by making them taller and bringing them more in line with PA wearing marine's height suggests this quite well. It also makes them kinda unique :P

Double post for a mini update. I dug out the other 3 heads I needed and all the G/S work is not done. Just need to smooth down a few areas and add some puches and grenades to the 'headless' three and the scouts are ready for priming. I might also have found a hassle free way to get the parts I need to finish building the Land Speeder :). Slow and steady progress...

I'm looking forward to seeing how this pans out. I think Wolf Scouts are cool and are perfect for kill team. What USP are you going to give your specialist? A relentless heavy bolter guy blazing away would look pretty sweet.

@ GI Joker: I was thinking of giving the guy with the power weapon FNP or Fleet. A Relentless Heavy Bolter scout would be cool, but since this pack as air support they've left their heavy weapons stowed on their dropship .. I also thought about giving the Landspeeder the Scout USR, so it could get into some advantageous positions quicker.

Thought I'd update this since I've made a start on painting these guys. I've been a little busy working on some other stuff, but the Scouts are coming along. Still need to scavenge the parts for the Landspeeder, but I'm working on that.

Obviously they're nowhere near finished yet, but here goes:

I should hopefully have time to get them done over the next couple of weeks, but Gabriel Seth is proving to be a bit of a distraction...

The scouts look good so far. I like the amount of conversion work you have put into them. Where is the bionic arm from? It looks scratch built and very good indeed. The preliminary painting looks ok too. I am not a fan of dry brushing but it does give them a weathered appearance.

Thanks mikhail, I'm not drybrushing's biggest fan either, but you're right it does give a weathered appearance, and it is fairly quick to do which is always a bonus when like me you don't always have loads of time to work on stuff.

The bionic arm is actually a Cadian Command squad arm trimmed down combined with a heavy bolter scout shoulder pad and the bracer and hand of a regular scout cc weapon arm. I thought it'd make him look different enough that people might not notice he has the same legs as the plasm pistol toting scout
