Word Bearers Project

Hello everybody,

 

 

let me tell you what this is all about: (very short intro)

 

 

I have been acquainted with the Warhammer universe for ~8 years. I have collected a Chaos Space Marines army 5 years ago, I've painted a bit but I never actually played the game.

I've decided to pick up Warhammer 40k again and my main goal now is to get my Word Bearers army ready for the tabletop. I already have some models (2 CSM squads, 1 Rhino, 1 wonderful Forgeworld Dreadnought, 8 Horrors), and now I bought what I needed to gather a 1000pts army.

Here's the scoop:

 

 

I am currently doing some simple conversions in order to bring out as much fluff as I can. Some old models are being modified as it has been a while since I last got them and my taste has changed a little bit. As soon as I finish glueing everything, I will also make some minor painting modifications.

 

Belakor will serve as the model for my Greater Summoned Demon, I'm not planning on doing any conversions on him. I'm more or less a beginner, so I want to keep it simple for now. Also, my main goel is to FINALLY play the game, so I don't want to spend too much time converting (only what is necessary).

 

The 5 man CSM squad will be lead by my Chaos Lord (Dark Apostle), so I wanted to give them a nice "elite" touch. They will consist of converted Dark Angels and I will give them Fantasy Chaos Knights spears for a barbaric, medieval, brutal look:

I wanted to shape some torches out of Geenstuff for my Defiler, but I'm really bad at it so I'll set that project aside for the moment. I can always add them later. I really want him to resemble a temple of Chaos doom (again, taking into account my skills, the material I have at my disposition and the time I want to spend on it).

 

What is torturing me most is my Dark Apostle. I don't know how to make him. The one you saw on the picture above is my old one, the only thing I'll keep are the torches on the "back-pack". I really want to make a nice Crozium, but I need converting bitz and I have none, I'm currently looking for someone in Geneva who could help me out.

What model should I use in order to create him? A simple CSM? A sorcerer? A marine chaplain? I've seen some great conversions here on the forum but as you can imagine, I've already spent quite a lot of money on what I bought recently and I want to avoid more spending. Maybe I'll just get my army going first (with a temporary "fill in" Dark Apostle) and I'll take my time getting the actual one done.

Concerning the Dark Apostle:

Since the Dark Apostles are the Chaos equivalent to the Imperial Chaplains and in part used to be Chaplains before they became corrupted, why not use an Imperial Chaplain as a basis then chaosify/corrupt him?

I don't know whether Dark Apostles can have Termie armour, but you could, for example, take a standard suit of Chaos tactical dreadnought armour, exchange the helmet for a skull (or a skull-shaped helmet), and add many bits of cloth and paper to the armour (you can make those out of Green Stuff, isn't too difficult), plus possibly some additional Chaos iconography, maybe an additional star here and there.

You don't need GS to get appropriate torches for a Defiler.

 

Check out the WFB Vampire Counts Corpse Cart. It has some very nice torches/braziers, and you can pick them up from bitz websites pretty cheap.

There are plenty of examples of plastic Chaplain conversions online. Try that, only use one of the Chaos Stars that come with many sets as the Crozius topper.

As a comment on your list, I'd recommend switching the special weapons so you have doubles in each squad. While in a real-life situation versatility is very important, on the tabletop you want to focus your squads on one task.

If you really want to cause an affront to any DA players you game against... don't even bother screwing with the DA iconography. Leave it on and call them fallen, and paint their armor black.

Thanks so far for your advice concerning the conversions and the army build, I will definitely take it into consideration.

I'm aware that the champion's shoulder pad on the mutated arm is somewhat misplaced, but I couldn't do any better for some reason. It doesn't bother me though, after all his arm is spinning out of control.

 

Here's what still needs to be done before I can play my Word Bearers:

 

- Greater summoned demon (Belakor)

- Dark Apostle (I will use my "old" one for the time being)

- 2 Rhinos

- slight adjustments to my CSM squads (for instance gluing heads, a banner bearer, etc.).

Wow. I love that squad. Are they going to stay at a 5-man, or will you expand them to 10?

 

The combination of the robes, and chaos-y bits is some of the best I've seen. Those look like some real heretics.
