Prospero

I've decided to model my Heresy era army for the sacking of Prospero and now have some questions regarding modeling my Wolves.

1) MkV armour, was it in production at the time of the Prospero incident? My brain says no but my wallet says yes. (I believe the Heresy hadn't actually begun...)

2) Any easy way of making MkV helmets? Armour is easy, helmets I'm unsure of

3) Bases, I'm thinking these because I seem to remember a passage about cobbled streets

4) Rune Priests, until I read Prospero Burns (can't wait!) and it confirms or denies Rune Priests continuing to use their powers I'm going to play it safe and either take a Rune Priest though only use his Runic Weapon to negate psychic powers or have him subconsciously boost his combat prowess, represented by a WGBL profile. Thoughts on this? Is the first option viable whilst being fluffy or does the psychic hood require active use of power to counter psychic attacks?

Cheers

Ack I really didn't like Prospero Burns and yes Rune Priests are still in use during the Scouring of Prospero despite the Council of Nikea apparently banning all psykers according to McNiell.

As for MK V armor, well it was in production just before the Heresy as a cheap and expedient alternative to the more sophisticated but far harder to produce MK IV. However the MK IV was still the work horse and was being produced the most. The majority of Forge Worlds producing the MK V sided with Horus and so few suits wound up in loyalist hands and most were used by traitors which garnered the cursed title "Heresy" armor for the suit.

I would suggest buying the Red Scorpion models with their MK IV armor from Forge World to represent Heresy Era wolves. MK IV was superior to the MK V and would have been far, far more prevalent in loyalist ranks.

Additionally the MK VI was designed and produced in very small quantities just before the Heresy and became the standard armor for most Marine forces around the time of the Scouring. It was not nearly as difficult to produce as the MK IV but was far more sophisticated and better than the MK V as well as incorporating a fully interchangeable design and manufacture allowing damaged suits to be repaired and returned to service far more easily. The MK VII was developed during the Heresy and only deployed in very small numbers as well, it took time for it to replace the majority of other Marks in the Astartes Chapters following the Heresy.

MK VIII is the only mark of armor to be designed and produced after the Horus Heresy.

So in short I'd suggest MK IV and MK VI as the majority of suits of armor in a Pre-Heresy/Heresy-Era Space Wolves army. Both of which are readily available from Forge World or the standard plastic kits. Though the Raven Guard kits from Forge World are apparently going to feature a lot of MK VI so that could be an even easier way of getting a number of MK VI suits.

Thanks for the help people, I was looking at the MkVI with a lot of interest to be honest, though all I heard was it was produced shortly before the Siege of Terra, of course we don't really have a clue what "shortly" translates to though. :P

Most of my Marines will be bareheaded anyway, though helmets will be on the model somewhere to make it more sensible, along with complete WYSIWYG loadouts...

It's going to be an expensive and slow project but also a great experimentation for me, with faces (I hated them), green stuffing and highlighting which to be honest I've never tried before.

Well you have the advantage of the Forge World MK IV kits and soon MK VI so you're two most common marks of armor shouldn't be difficult to get ahold of.

Forge World also has the Pre-Heresy Land Raider kit and that always makes for a nice addition to a Pre-Heresy/Heresy-Era force.

prospero burns is out already? or are you talking about not liking thousand sons?

probably stick with the more subtle powers of the rune priest like tempest or storm caller.

you know things that could potentially happen during a battle? a blizzard whips up some how or driving gales veer even drop pods off course. fun stuff

I apologize brothers, Prospero Burns isn't due yet but I'm going to hold off on certain details until the book is in my hands, though I enjoyed A Thousand Sons and it gave me some insight, the idea of "naturalistic" powers is a good one.

And I guess Space Wolves have helmets, just in case :) they'll be on belt loops mainly as I don't think they're stupid enough to leave something like that at home, impromptu stein anyone?

I love the Pre-Heresy Land Raider kit though this'll be a pure infantry force for a while with maybe drop pods to represent the first waves.
