Arithon
Firstly, I dont get to play very often even though I have been involved in the hobby for 20 years and was hoping for some advice. I was thinking about taking a couple units of stormtroopers in a 1750 points force of grey knights- are they worth it? I have the army built around 6 GKT and 2 squads of 8 GT's,Landraider crusader with dreadnought and Inquisitor +retinue. I was thinking to back them up in numbers by including 3 units (of 8) of karskins + at least one transport. Does this sound balanced/ competitive for a grey knight force? Pro/ Cons to such a set up? Justicar Valius
My 1750 list. The accepted units (i.e everyone take them) 2x 5 IST, 2 meltas, rhino, smoke, extra armour, 256 2x Grey knight Land raider crusaders, smoke, 516 The units some think are stupid, some think are perfect 5 IST, 2 plasmas, rhino, extra armour, smoke, 128 Grand master, hammerhand, psychic hood, 185 retinue: 4 grey knight terminators, incinerator, 199 8 Power armoured Grey knightsm 2 incinerators, justicar has frag grenades, 246 Grey knight dreadnought, plasma cannon, extra armour, 125 7 IST, 2 flamers, 80 I find this a decent list with 15 points remaining. You can master craft a weapon, drop the plasma cannon and extra armour on the dread and give it a twin lascannon and missile launcher. It has anti-tank, it has objective takers and holders and it has a hammer unit. Some things i've left out are the inquisitor with 2 mystics a multimleta servitor in a rhino. It's a popular deep strike defence unit all over the imperium, I just don't like it. The main thing with my list is be agressive. What you are suggesting is taking extra IST (waste of points in my, and many peoples opinion), Having more than one unit not in a transport (very bad thing normally). Your list will look great on paper, but the lack of maneouverability (remember our transports are for the unit we bought them for only) will hit you hard. number6
Have a look at the army lists in this post. These are about as effective as pure DH codex armies get, IMHO. Welcome aboard! :) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/197653-best-options-for-demon-hunters/#findComment-2354772 Share on other sites
KingDeath
You might want to think about using inducted IG squads for their cheap Chimeras, heavy weapons and low pointcost. The main problem is that Daemonhunters alone lack the heavy weapons to deal with the mechspam which has become quite common in 5. edition. Sure, you can use suicidal 5 man dualmelter, stormtrooper squads in rhinos but investing 100+ points just to pop an enemy transport is a bit...much. Justicar Valius
Naaa transports are hit by the dreads, its the raiders that get meltakazid. I would like to field 10 men units in large points games but I simply don't have the models. Arithon, Welcome to the boards. I, too, have been involved in the hobby for over 20 years (and also don't get to play that often). My recommendation at this point is to hold-off on adding to your current force for a bit. The new codex for the Grey Knights should be released some time this summer according to some fairly reliable rumors. We should start seeing some of the leaked rules and army list options relatively soon. I'd wait just a few months to see what the new codex will allow, rather than buying, building, and painting units now that might not be available come July. If you want to add some stuff for now to play with, then I'd think about proxying the IST with other models that you might already own. Edit: I just noticed the pics of your Grey Knights in the Hall of Honour and holy cow, those are some awesome looking miniatures; well done! Arithon
Firstly thanks everyone for their support and it has certainly given me some great insights into what people are using. I like the mech list and I can see how such tactics could give your opponents serious headaches. I will have to try a couple of list especially along the lines of what Number 6 has linked too ( great read by the way). @ Valerian It will be very interesting to seeing what develops in the next few months. I know there is a lot of speculation as to what could potentially happen. The only thing is I bought a huge amount of miniatures about 6 months ago and have been working on and off on them ever since. Like you suggested though I will wait and see what might happen but just paint what like until then. I imagine that at least one/ two of my landraider will be finished before then and hopefully at least one more unit of grey knights. At least that gives me a starting point. Thanks for the comments on my painting- as you can imagine I do really enjoy the hobby.
