IA DIY Chapter Location Map?

Recommended Posts

The only real problem with the map is... it's too BIG to be placed permanently in the B&C forums as a resource. Believe me, I've tried uploading it to my album for easier access, but apparently the board has a maximum size restriction for uploaded files. The result? The 4000-ish by 3000-ish sized Galaxy Map was cut down to around 1600 by 1000 pixels in size, not surprisingly becoming unreadable in the process.

I suppose I can just maintain the PNG in Megaupload for those interested, though I'm not sure just how long Megaupload maintains files, since as far as I know they get deleted or removed after a set period.

Once the project has been completed, and you have reached a version you are happy with calling number 1. I can get discussing with the Admins about loading the file onto the B&C not through normal methods.

As for comments, like all resources we make in Liber, it is a useful tool if someone wants it to be and it isn't something to live or die by :)

mein Gott!! You guys are quick! I only suggested that a few days ago, and its almost completely fully functioning? Wow - excellent job, this is a really good resource, as Aurelius Rex has already seen it maybe this can get stickied?

As I'm a retired Cedo now I will have to leave that to Ferrata and Sev. :)

Actually it's 99% complete. The only thing missing is the the good Commissar's decision whether or not to include the Castigators (the answer was no :)), and possibly some minor cleaning up, as you'll notice that, uh, the Knights of the Black Rose's label got swallowed up by the Eye of Terror. Kind of fitting actually...

Wow, that's cool. :) Great work!

Speaking for myself this is going to be very handy - I can work out what sort of neighbours I want my DIY chapters to have now. :D

On a constructive-criticism-note though, there's two worlds called Molov.

One's north-west of Fortress, and the other's south-east of Fortress. I just wondered if that was intentional.

In the original map we based this on, there were actually two instances of Gryphonne IV as well (in two different segmentums!), and Quisto'Rol (both in Segmentum Ultima), so yes, it's intentional. I could just name them Molov Primus and Molov Secundus though...

EDIT: Final version uploaded. I hope this one lasts a year before any major updates need to be done on it. :D

Size issue: Could split it into Segmentums.

As one of the people who coined the usage of the phrase in the Liber, the "shared universe" only goes so far - it has its limitations. What happens if I describe a Chapter to be completely alone and isolated, only for someone else to place their Chapter nearby? We both have an equal right to be where we want, but it would affect my fluff negatively. What if someone wanted to place their Chapter in a specific place, had a look and then thought "Oh, I can't put it there because someone else is there."?

True... in appearances it may feel like an 'isolated' Chapter is too close to a canon/Liber Chapter. However, space is big. Like, mega large huge.

I'm sure you know this (probably better than I do), but it bears saying.

I'm pleased that you thought of the Castigators (I'm surprised anyone remembers them!)

Who could forget?

I cant help it...this just begs for Douglas Adams:

"Space is big. You just won't believe how vastly, hugely, mind-bogglingly big it is. I mean, you may think it's a long way down the road to the chemist's, but that's just peanuts to space."

— Douglas Adams (The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy)

Dont forget that the map only displays in 2 dimensions....it leaves out the vertical plane...im sure some chapters would be horizontally similarly located...but vertically far apart....

I dont suppose you'd be willing to put DIY Templar Crusades and DIY Fleet Based Chapter AO's? Not that I have a few idea or anything like that.

Even if you don't feel like doing this, EA, it might be a good idea to add in the official Templar Crusades and the fleet based Chapters shown in the SM dex.

Honestly, though I'm not sure I'd want my Void Reavers on this map much for the same reason's CM posted and also because they are a story chapter.

However, I do feel that this needs to be an interactive map with not only sector's added in, but also the capacity for sub-sector capacity which I believe are distributed by cubic volume and not by number of systems and planets. Essentially you'll need a 3D galaxy map with full X,Y,Z mobility to properly distribute the chapter's and planets of the 40k universe.

That is asking for a lot but as Ghost Legion pointed out this map only covers 2 of the three dimensions and it is very much possible that two chapters could occupy the same x,y coordinates but never make contact because of extensive distance along the z axis.

I in no way expect my ideals to be executed as I suspect that the coding would be a pain at the least and then the needed web space and bandwidth would also come into play... yes this ideal would likely be a major undertaking.

I've contacted the Admins about a behind the scene upload. However, I would like to point out, in a very self-serving and baby-lie manner, where are the following planets?

Darkhold - on the map but not labelled as Dark Sons

Furtim

Telluria

I would presume they are missing because neither their IAs nor myself were helpful in locating them, although it could be because they are GW chapters fluffed out

Oddly, as I mentioned earlier, a lot of this could be done with knowledge and use of the Celestia software. Again, think Google Earth for space. Sadly I think this is far far more work than any of us would want to undertake...even though the thought of it is pretty cool. (side note...someone has modeled in an Emperor class battleship in Celestia....last I saw it it was chasing a ship from Star Trek....)

For my part, i think the software is interesting...but the simple maps are more useful in the short term...more user friendly as well...

Darkhold was not labeled for the latter version (GW Chapter gets an orange label ), the other two because darned if I could figure out where the heck they are.

Doh - sorry A, missed the Cedo...Snap!

But don't my DIY version deserv some love?

Furtim is located near the Eye of Terror, which direction was never really discussed.

The Castellans patrol the Castellan Belt, which was ever located. I might have to think about it to get them on the map. I will be PM you instructions about the file.

  • 3 weeks later...

Thanks Ferrata. The MOSTLY completed map has been sent as per your instructions. Do note that the IA/IT articles that have left their Chapter's territories deliberately vague have been left as such (meaning they'll have to be added in a latter update ahahaha).

Some minor changes notable:

- GW Chapter Planets now have the names of the Chapters from there included, whether they were destroyed or otherwise.

- GW Chapter Fleet routes have also been included, based on the 5th Edition C: SM map.

I have received the 8 or so files that comprise the map, however my work schedule for the next few weeks is a little on the insane side (11am-11pm most days). So I don't have a lot of free time right now beyond "Admin stuff", we will get the map upload in such away that people can either view it on the web (very large file in that regard) or possibly download it to use at home so to speak.

Thanks for your patience.
