Beginning my Space Wolf Army

Hi guys,

I am completely new to the Warhammer 40K genre and, would like, if you don't mind some help or suggestions into what area I should build my army.

Currently I have purchased the basics to get started:

1 No. Space Wolf Battle Force

1 No. Space Wolves Wolf Guard Terminators

1 No. Venerable Dreadnought (most likely to be converted to Bjorn the Fell-Handed)

1 No. Njal Stormcaller

On order:

1 No. Land Raider (haven't decided what pattern to go for, but bought this to ferry the terminators in and out of battle)

1 No. Space Wolf Battle Force (to build up the remaining Grey Hunter squads and for a drop pod)

The current thinking thanks to the advice of a friend of mine was from the Battleforce build 5 Wolf Guards and then in the course of time, build 5 x 10 Grey Hunter squads, which would then be accompanied by 1 Wolf Guard.

If you need more details please ask, I would be more than happy to provide more details of my setup, etc

All the best,

You can't go wrong with two packs of Grey Hunters with Wolf Guard pack leader. It appears that You will have the models for scouts as well and will be able to model one big pack of them - maybe 9 + WG. I'd suggest You to think whether You want to go drop pod - since You will have two pods already. If not, then You will need some transports - I'd strongly advise You buying Razorbacks and not glueing the top hatch in, thus giving You choice to switch between Rhino/Razorback.

Also You should invest in the devastator box, mixing it with the space wolves sprues from the battleforces, which will give You the Long Fangs. If You have some spare money, buy a Tactical Space marines box and mix the components - You will find there meltagun and missile launcher which are novadays hard to get.

well from what it looks like you are going to be doing, i would suggest:

- Long fangs

- Landspeeders

-a Vindicator

- skyclaws/swiftclaws

-one other HQ (i would suggest if you are going with Bjorn, that you use a Wolf Priest or Rune Priest, even though I am not a fan of the RP)

i made a list with 6 troop choices( 4xGrey Hunters and 2x Bloodclaws), i had a unit of Scouts and two Long Fang packs, i felt that it really needed more anti-tank. just food for thought on a troop heavy list.

Hi and welcome to the hobby! Well you certainly have a good mix of stuff there to build an army, in my opinion you carnt go wrong with the space wolf battle force, so 2 is a great basis for an army.

Firstly you need to start thinking about your army list, for example are you going to be playing 1500/2000 or what ever. My advice would be to include the things you like first and formost. Your going to spend a lot of time making, playing and gaming with your army so make sure you enjoy using the units you have.

I personaly would suggest getting a squad or two of long fangs to give the army some long range fire power. Space wolves are a very aggressive army so do their best work up close and personel, a mix of rhinos and drop pods is a good way of getting to grips with the enemy.

Hope any of that helped

Many thanks for your welcomes and advice!

I'll be honest and say i'm a COMPLETE novice when it comes to playing the game, as I haven't played any matches (I hope to rectify that this weekend though at my local GW). Currently I'm enjoying building and painting the models (I guess this will be half the hobby for me).

I was thinking that the Long Fangs would be a nice addition, but didn't see a pack for them so I guess it will be a conversion effort.

The Rune Priest seems to be everyone's favourite thing these days, checking out some army lists I see people rolling with 2 of them...Not sure how i'll play it, I guess i'll find out when playing for real!

Any of you fellas from Scotland?

Regards,

Forgot to tell that You will need and love a Rune priest :tu:

i put need in bold for one reason only:

you do not need a Rune priest. yes lots of people use them, yes they have their good points. but at least in my experience with them they are no better then any other hq option we have, and i often find that the others are more useful with how i run my army.

i am not saying don't use them, if your really like the fluff/play style of them then use them. i am just saying that i am kind of getting sick of people saying you NEED them.

Indeed-well that and flaming :) hee hee hee

On your last post: dunno if its sacrielage or not but I find Ebay to be an excellent source for armies.

Theres a lot of SW stuff GW doesnt sell anymore that can really make your army a bit different.

The 2 Battle forces are a good buy, you save about £20 per battle force and i love drop pods! Grey Hunters are awesome, twin Plasma guns and like 30 attacks on the charge. Njal is a well good character too :) Could get Logan Grimnar? Seems to me you have a very good army in itself there, will be interesting to see how you fair at your local club. Oh and welcome to the addiction.. i mean hobby :P
What kind of things can't SW get anymore?

There were 3 different metal Grey Hunter Models,3 different Blood Claws,3 different Long Fangs, all you can buy from GW now is the Sargeant of those packs as a Wolfgaurd blister pack. And if Im not mistaken you cant buy Bjorn The Fell Handed (metal boxed set) anymore either.

Ah, I see - A Bjorn model would be real nice as the Ven Dreadnought conversion is quite hard and also doesn't represent a good enough looking model, in my opinion. I'd imagine finding a boxed and unbuilt model is pretty rare, nigh impossible?

Boxed,yes-but not so hard to find Bjorn on Ebay (whats harder is finding old school ork arms :P )

I got one about a year ago, unassembled for I think $40 AUS dollars (20 pound or so)

The other metals I mentioned are pretty common on there too.
