BLACKHWK
So i was thinking about a crazy good CC unit for my Wolves and i came up with this 9x wolf guard with frost blades 1x Ragnar on the charge the wolf guard would strike at strength 6 initiative 5 with a possible 54 attacks! and on top of that Ragnar would get to work his wonders Let me know what you think Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/197908-crazy-ragnar-idea/ Share on other sites
Wolf Lord Mjolnir
Ok lets look at the viability of that - if you are going ti invest in that unit you will want a LR to ensure you get the charge so you are looking at around 850pts! for one unit?!? Not worth it IMO Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/197908-crazy-ragnar-idea/#findComment-2357466 Share on other sites
BLACKHWK
Yes it is very point heavy but I feel like its the only way to really take advantage of Ragnar's special rules in any other unit i see them wasted Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/197908-crazy-ragnar-idea/#findComment-2357474 Share on other sites
Sarapham
Yes it is very point heavy but I feel like its the only way to really take advantage of Ragnar's special rules in any other unit i see them wasted Together with grey hunters in a simple rhino you could get GHs with 5 attacks each with I5 and S5... that's not wasted and it´s cheap considering you always want grey hunters anyway. Works with blood claws too of course but then you probably want the raider again. Wolf Lord Mjolnir
I think Ragnar's unit nearly always demands a Landraider to get the charge and benefit from furious charge. Take Ragnar, a 10 man Grey Hunter pack with two melta guns led by a Wolf Guard with frost blade Saves around 300pts and remember you still have at least 6 str 6 power weapon attacks at I 6 from Ragnar, 4 str 6 arracks at i5 from Wolf Guard and two meltagun shots going in gto h2h folloed by at least 30 str 5 attacks at i5 from the Grey Hunters! Give them a Wolf Standard and you are hitting on 3s with ones rerolled so probably only miss on 2s and the standard also effects to wound rolls. Meaning all of Ragnar's and the wolf guard's hits will likely wound as he will probably need 2s and rerolls 1s! Nasty and much cheaper! BLACKHWK
Against MEQ armies i see the wolf guard working the best because of the amount of power. You could shave 100 points off them if you just use power weapons and they would still be very effective. Vassakov
The big problem with these kinds of "Deathstar" units, is whatever you hit in your turn is likely to die. Horribly. Problem is, they then stand there, often right next to the enemy, being awesome and waving "shoot us" signs. Most competent players will throw a reasonable shooting phase at them, and at that point they are just T4, 3+ Sv guys who die to... well, rather a lot. That Dev Plasma squad, those Obiliterators, the Leman Russ [insert AP>3 Blast here], Starcannons... you get my drift? Without an invulnerable save, they are really going to struggle to achieve much after their first charge. A far, far superior prospect would be a few WG in TDA, with Wolf Claws, Thunder Hammers, Storm Shields and a Cyclone. Cheaper, too. BLACKHWK
Hmmm you make a good point. I can see how they would get shot to death in a matter of seconds but the storm shield is a huge amount of points. I have tried the TH/SS combo before and find that it is every more of a magnet for shooting attacks. Most of my opponets will throw just about everything into them and destroy them before they get a chance to do any real damage. And to solve the "deathstar" problem could I reduce the number of wolfguard in the squad? BLACKHWK
Ragnar's wolves? I think they are a waste of 20 points you could get another Grey hunter for that! Emperor's Instrument
I have a massive point sink in my list being Logan plus five TDA Wolf Guard in a Redeemer, comes in at approx 750pts. Combine that with deep striking grey hunters, wolf priest, rune priest, dreadnought, TWC and Long Fangs though and I don't think it's that bad.
