Batrep SM vs SW

Greetings Brothers,

I figured it was about time to get off my butt and start reporting some of the battles I have, I dubbed this one "hunt for the squats" (dwarf miners from the WFB boxed set). This game was an 1850 seize ground with 5 objectives, Spearhead deployment, SM player got 1st turn. So as not to inundate this thread with link after link, I'll provide one to the whole set the description tells what the pictures were of:

SM vs. SW Batrep

Looking at the table from the perspective of the camera the objectives were as follows: 1 in the broken down logs (closest terrain piece), 1 with the wrecked grav tank (middle left), 1 in front of the Necron structure, and 1 each in the two ruins in the SM deployment zone.

Armies were:

SM

Vulkan

10 Tac Marines (combat squaded to 5 w/ 1 MG in Assault cannon RB, 5 w/ 1 MM)

10 Tac Marines (combat squaded to 5 w/ 1 MG in Assault cannon RB, 5 w/ 1 LC)

5 TH/SS Termies

1 LRR w/ HK missile

2 Vindis (represented by the black rhinos), I think 1 had an HK missile

1 HF/HF dread

1 MM/HF dread

3 Individual MM/HF Speeders, 1 kept in reserve

SW

RP w/ CotS LL, Murderous Hurricane

WP w/ MB, WTT

Dread MM/HF; Pod

Dread AssCannon/HF; Pod

5 WG (will put with squads)

8 GH, MG, PP, MotW w/ WGPL CM & PF; Pod

10 GH, 2x PG, 1 MotW w/ WGPL TDA, CML, SB, Chainfist

7 GH, MG, PP, MotW w/ WGPL, CP & PF; Rhino (Rune Priest here)

8 BC , PF, Flamer w/ WGPL BP & PF; Rhino (Wolf Priest here)

2 MM/HF Speeders, 1 kept in reserve

6 LF, 4 ML 1 LC w/ WGPL boltpistol & CC

Predator, Sponson HB & PMSB

I believe the only thing not visible in the Deployment Picture was: 5 Marines+MM in the lead ruin of the SM deployment zone, 5 Marines+LC in the rear ruins and near the short edge of his deployment zone

Turn 1 SM-

LRR, Vindi, and 1 of the Razorbacks advance. LRR Machine spirits a Hunter Killer missile and explodes the BC's Rhino. The brash young Space Wolves climbed out of the wreckage unscathed (and not pinned thanks to the WP!)

Turn 1 SW-

I decided to drop the two dreads in a order to deal with the advanced Vindi and Razorback. The Assault Cannon immobilized the Vindicator on the board edge, and I considered it out of the game (This proves to be a really bad idea, stay tuned!)

The Land Speeder Zips over the Bloodclaw's head and Destroys the Land Raider. Remainder of my shooting sees 2 of the terminators off.

At this point, I thought things were looking good.

Turn 2 SM-

A bit of the wind was knocked out of my sails with a fantastic round of Twinlinked melta & Heavy Flamer Fire, and Vulkan was moved to my short list of things to kill (no effect on the army, just wanted him to be gone).

The tac squad out for vengeance for the destruction of their beloved Razorback saw off my MM dreadnought with some of their own melta goodness. A combination of MM shots from the two Land speeders killed the assault cannon dreadnought.

Vulkan, angry about all the work he'll have to put in to get the Redeemer battle-worthy again destroyed the Land Speeder with a Precision shot from the Gauntlet of the Forge.

Turn 2 SW-

Shooting saw 1 or 2 of the Land Speeders being unable to shoot in their next turn. The Long Fangs opened up destroying the Hf/HF Dreadnought

The Blood Claws, wanting to prove themselves to their older brothers assaulted Vulkan and his retinue. A vicious round of close combat ended with the deaths of the WP and 2 Blood Claws, the young wolves were able to bring down one Terminator and laid Vulkan low with a Power Fist(to the face!).

Turn 3 SM-

The Reserve speeder does a precision Deep Strike, landing 2" from the Predator, a side armor shot from the Multi-melta pops a tread, immobilizing the Predator.

Blood Claws failed to do any damage to the two remaining Terminators, and they respond killing 3 of the Blood Claws. The Blood Claws held fast, even without the leadership of their Wolf Priest.

The vindicator, wanting to add to the battle destroys the drop pod in it's front arc.

The tactical squad that destroyed the dreadnought in it's previous turn advanced onto the objective near the downed grav-tank.

Turn 3 SW-

Land Speeder arrived, aiming for a deep strike to get at the side armor of the Vindicator lurking behind the Necron Structure. The pilots decided that it would be more effective to land ON the Vindicator and so were forced back into reserves.

The GH drop pod also came in, hoping to land a bit to the right of the monolith in order to destroy the aforementioned Vindicator. The strike cruiser pilots must not have gotten the memo about not drinking until the battle was won, and the drop pod scattered into the ruins containing the LC tac squad, and way too close to both the vindicator and an angry dreadnought.

The Predator turned it's Auto Cannon and right heavy bolter on the Landspeeder that just dropped behind it. A torrent of fire sees the vehicle immobilized and the Multi-melta destroyed.

An truly unimpressive round of shooting only saw the other Razorback Destroyed.

The Blood Claws finally kill another of the terminators, but still lose combat. Despite the Thunder Hammers killing them left and right, the Blood Claws again stand fast.

Turn 4 SM-

Combined shooting from the two tactical squads, the Dreadnought and a Direct hit from the Vindi saw to the deaths of 7 of the 9 Marines that came out of the drop pod. They rolled a 10 on their morale check and fell back.

The Rune Priest was killed by a Multi-melta shot (he split off from the Grey hunters in the Rhino, venturing to do something to the Vindi in SW 3)

More SM shooting immobilized the GH Rhino, and yet some more shooting killed one of the ML Long Fangs.

Turn 4 SW-

At this point, the situation looked very grim and I started to get "Angry-gamer" face and stopped taking Pictures. I am not a great loser, but can take it in stride when I feel like my fate is somewhat in my hands, but when I feel like the dice are screwing me I can be a bit unpleasant; but I digress. Continuing...

The Blood Claws finally killed the last terminator.

Combined shooting from the Long Fangs and my Predator killed 2 of the marines holding the Grav-tank objective. More shooting killed one of the three Speeders.

Turn 5 SM-

The Grey Hunters got out of their Rhino and advanced towards the Necron objective. Remember that vindicator that was out of the game? Yeah I moved one of my GH just a bit too close and he was able to land a pie-plate on his head, wiping the entire squad. The two remaining Blood Claws were tagged by the pie-plate from the other vindicator.

Turn 5 SW-

Destroyed one of the two pesky Vindicators (the one that got the BC). Shooting from the Predator killed another marine on the Grav-tank objective, forcing them to fall back.

Turn 6 SM-

Marines that fell back retook the Grav-tank objective.

Turn 6 SW-

A whole lot of nothing.

SM win 4-1

The dice combined with a few dumb mistakes on my part made for an unpleasant evening. I promptly came home and burnt the army list (not really, as I think it's a solid list, I took 2nd at my last local tourny with it). I re-worked it a bit, and I'll let you guys know how the next battle goes.

Cheers,

Huzzah

@ Silverwolf there is a link to the flickr set, you must have missed it

@ wolf363839

The board wasn't particularly terrain sparse. Maybe a little short of 25%, not a huge selection of "good" terrain pieces to choose from for 40k.

@ Jeske

The dread is a valid configuration, TLHF on the right arm, SB upgraded to heavy flamer on the left. Opponent is new to 5th ed. (an old 2 ed player) and has been playing fairly regularly with myself and one other gentleman at our FLGS. I don't think I'll be seeing that dreadnought again, as it's not the best configuration for his army.
