New Wolves list

Hail!

I, being new to the game, am starting a wolves army. I am doing a "Tale of Four Gamers" thing for our local Guild. I am new to 40k in general as well.

So the set up: I started with a 500 point list with a Rune Priest, and 11 Grey Hunters (a squad of 6 and 5) and two Razorbacks with TLLC.

The issue: We decided I am doing a Pre-Heresy army, and therefore my Razorbacks are illegal. Also, my squads got wiped pretty early in two different games. Thus I need advice on making the army legal Pre-Heresy wise and maybe beefing up the squads.

I was thinking of adding a Landspeeder into the mix. I eventually want to incorporate Canis and Njal into the mix at the 750 or 1000 point level. I did come up with a nasty 750 point list with Njal...

Thoughts?

That army sounds fine in my opinion - could just swap the razorbacks for long fangs and more grey hunters.

Buy grey hunter upgrades to make them better in combat.

Use all your force to kill/capture one objective at a time.

for the extra 250points you will need to start thinking about taking wolf guard to make your grey hunter units better and using rhinos or a drop pod instead of razorbacks for pre-heresy.

Just my 2p

This is a bright idea, pardon my sarcasm ;). The list will be called Njal and other 10 grey hunters? :)

First thing - Grey hunters tend to survive better if taken in packs of 9-10, if with WG pack leaders - they do even better. Land Speeders are sometimes very good at small games, but I'd really suggest You stick with common rune priest for the beginning and add Njal only in 1500+ lists.

I would agree with Cain, at 750 points, Njal is madness really. Just far too expensive.

Also the advice about Grey Hunters is good. They are much better in groups of 9 or 10. I would maybe try for a pack of 10 in a rhino (possibly 9 with the RP), then another pack of 5-6. That way you have a unit to try and hold an objective and a harder hitting unit to grab one. Things like Mark of the Wolfen and Wolf Standards are great. I personally would try to have at least 1 powerfist in there too, just in case you meeting something with a really high toughness / armour.

LongFangs are another great unit. 4 LF with missile launchers and a pack leader comes in pretty damn cheap. Ive not tried this myself, but you can add the RP to the Longfangs and then get a 10 man Grey Hunter squad, which gives you 2 special weapons, one for free.

Thanks for the advice so far. In combing the army lists there are very few at this point level.

I currently have MoW and a wolf standard in each squad. PF I tend to dislike due to the initiative penalty. What about PW instead?

Also, on a 4x6 table how necessary is it to be mechanized? Should I drop a rhino?

PW are great against MEQs, but what if you meet something with T6 or higher? I would have at least 1 thing with a decent close combat punch. PF are much better on a Wolf Guard because he gets 2 basic attacks, but that would mean you having to take 3 and splitting them into your units, which at 500points may be too expensive.
