W.I.P kit-bashed Sniper Scouts and Wulfen

Hail brothers.

It seems so long since I posted anything but I have not been idle. I have been rejigging my old army to work legally with the new dex, adding some banners and sorting them out to work better. I have also finished painting my Wolf Priest and another Rhino (pics to follow).

But it's now time to add some new stuff which I haven't used before, namely Sniper Scouts and Wulfen.

As I pretty much hate the new style plastic scouts, much preferring the imagary our Scouts had in the last dex, I have had a go at making some my self. The general idea is based on 'stripped down PA' with SW chest emblems (my entire army has these - not a regular eagle in sight!!), Catachan arms and converted lsaguns into sniper rifles with Kroot shoulder pads. After filing the backs off the PA it left a hole, so a rumage through the bits box found an IG backpack which fits almost exactly. Trinkets and totems will get done later as I am looking for a thumbs up that this is going in the right direction.

In the pics, the guy with the cloak would be a Scout Pack leader (not a Wolf Guard) and was the trial piece so he got glued. The other guy is only held together with sticky tack at the moment.

Next is my GH with Mark of the Wulfen. This was inspired by another forum member's work, Wolf Lord Mjolnir(http://www.bolterandchainsword.com/index.php?showtopic=171128&hl=wulfen) and built because the old ones are so pricey - if you can find them, and the pure fact of them being so useful / nasty in combat.

So brothers, please cast an eye and C&C them

Edit; stinkenheim, you are right, it was Wolf Lord Mjolnir. In respect I have added his name for credit in the original post.

DGC cant agree more about the new scouts .I,m trying something very similar with mine. The main difference being I'v shaved back the armour from the thighs and gs material ,like the old 2nd ed wolfscout models (my favorates).SW scouts are full blown marines and should look like it.Looking good,I think your on the right track, keep up the good work.cheers.

Would you have any pics?? I think you are saying that you shaved down the upper legs greenstuffed material (i.e cloth?? or trousers??) Some pics would help me a lot visually.

I think that is the sort of image I am going for. The inspiration is the Wolf Scout picture (not the models as they don't look the same) in the scout entry from the last codex - a sort of modernised 2nd edition mini. Does that make sense??

Wispy - each to their own. I like the imagery of a SW 'turning'. The description in the new codex gives me the notion that it is something that happens during battle and not a permanent state. Not fully man nor fully beast - somewhere inbetween, so the wulfen model wouldn't look like a man or a wolf but a blend of the two. The entry also says he uses his claws and teeth instead of his normal weapons which sort of adds to the feeling that for the most part the SW is in control of the beast within - just sometimes he can't help but 'let go' and the beastial nature takes over. Just my take on it

Thanks to all for the comments. Please feel free to continue to C&C

Yeah DGC that makes alot of sense from were I,m sitting .The thighs are covered in cloth with a diamond pattern on them, like the 2nd ed wolf scout sargents which that drawing follows closley. As for pics not sure how to as computers are not my first love, sorry. If you can get a look at the sargent models you,ll see what I mean. And that I a crackingly good picture of that scout I,d forgottenhow much I liked it.cheers.

The sniper rifle barrels and silencers are made from the remains of the older SW banner poles with the cross piece and wolf head removed. Problem is I have only got three of them so I will be looking at another way of making them - maybe some 2.4mm plastic tubing over some brass rod might work.

Have also been looking at some other heavy rifles for more ideas

Will probably end up using some elements from each whilst still basing it on the body of the IG Lasgun for ease

As for the marauder bits, I have some of them ready to build some regular SW scouts but as this squad are only going to be equiped with sniper rifles the Catachan parts seemed a good place to start.

Thanks for the interest

You might also take a look at the Barrett M107CQ anti material rifle. It's a newer model to the M82A1, designed for close quarters use (well, close quarters in which you'd need a long range sniper rifle... I'm not thinking about that any more than I have to.), resulting in a lighter, more compact weapon.

*still loves the M82A1*

This made me laugh. They obviously all play 40k where if you get stuck in cc then you just hit your enemy with the rifle :)

On topic - the Barrett does look good (just went on a google search). The more I think about this project the more I feel the shape of the silencer / flash suppressor doesn't have to be the normal long shape we 40k gamers are used to. Some of the above look so solid and awesome I may go with that, especially if I have to build ten of them.

Edit; Made this during lunch break. Removed barrel from lasgun, cut barrel from Kroot rifle and removed blade. Cut wider end off and glued to lasgun - allowed to dry, then drilled into lasgun and Kroot barrel and joined together with a piece of brass rod. Added SM sights to top.

As yet this isn't glued while I try out some other ideas

C&Cs welcome

Another fruitful lunch break.

Inspired by Oxide's comments I had a go at gs-ing the upper leg to represent cloth. I trust this is what Oxide was suggesting by scrapping down the legs and gs-ing over them. The mostly finished Scout I did with a knife blade which was a bit tricky so with the legs you see on their own I tried something different. I cut the legs of at the soft joint and used a fairly coarse file to take them down quickly, then used the knife to tidy them up. This also gave me the chance to shape the butt armour and tidy up the groin area before gluing them back together.

Although my GS skills are limited I am quite happy how they turned out and I'm sure after a couple more they will look better. I didn't want the 'grid' pattern so just tried standard combats style.

It took a while to get the arms to fit correctly as the SM torso is somewhat bigger than a Catachan one. I ended up carefully scrapping off most of the central part of the chest emblem and filing the right arm at a slight angle to get it to go across the front. The left arm was treated in a similar way but I also had to cut most of the way down through the wrist and bend it upward so it would meet the rifle ( the just visible white line is where it was bent upward). Added the triggers from two Kroot rifles and a tiny piece of half-round plastic to the front to act as a small tripod.

The last part of this basic build is the head. As the normal Scout figures have some kind of breathing apparatus around the neck I wanted to mimic this but didn't want to sculpt it onto the armour so I am going to use the re-breather heads and sculpt different hair styles on to them instead.

Overall I am quite happy with the results - just nine more to do

As always, feel free to comment

That is looking dam good DGC... I'm afraid I'm going to have to steal a number of these ideas for remaking my own scouts :D. I really luv the whole "striped down PA" look of them, reinforces the whole bit about them being Guys that have gone through years of being a Marine, and then gone back to a lighter armour, while visually demonstrating that the armour is lighter and more mobile, but loses out on protection because of it.
