Wolf Lord Kit

Hail brothers, i see lots of people using the fabled Rune Priests as their Primary HQ choices but for me personally i can't go past the savagery of a Wolf Lord. The only problem im having is what to gear to give him.

 

This is my initial load out but there is probably room for improvement

 

Wolf Lord - Kjarl Grimblood

+Terminator Armour

+Storm Shield

+Frostblade

+Wolf Tooth Necklace

+Wolf Tail Talisman

+Saga of the Warrior Born

 

What do you think, i like a combat orientated character and i did consider a TWM but i thought Grimblood would be more accoustomed to his Redeemer than a Wolf.

He will be carving it up with a WG bodyguard in TDA with a mix of WC/WC, TH/SS and most likely a heavy flamer/chainfist.

 

What do you think? Will he be able to handle himslef in CC? Any input greatly appreciated

It looks just fine, you might be better off with a pair of Wolf Claws to get an additional attack and higher chance of hitting or wounding your targets so you make best use of the Saga of the Warrior Born, but that's just a personal preference really.

Not a fan of Terminator Armor on a close combat unit of any stripe. Only reason I'd take termie armor is for access to Cyclone Missile Launchers on WGPL's (attached to Long Fangs).

Also, you'll be hitting most things on 3+ anyway, why bother with the Wolf Tooth Necklace? Anything you would use it on is something like a daemon prince, better taken out at range with heavy weapons.

Saga of the Warrior Born is expensive and relies on you being in combat in turn two. My experience with assaults has been, if you hit a unit, you either break the unit (running it down) or it breaks you.

 

That's 60 points of fat you can trim off this guy. Enough for a land speeder. Or a basic predator with autocannon.

 

For the curious, I'm looking at a Wolf Guard Battle Leader on Thunderwolf mount with frost blade and storm shield for my HQ-that-isn't-a-rune-priest. 170 points of S6 Power Weapon doom with a 3++ sv.

Thanks for the feedback. As i am basing my lord on Kjarl Grimblood i dont really want to mount him on a TWM as it is more likely he would go in one of his 12 land raider redeemers.

 

And a couple of questions,

 

1)do u get +1A for having FB/SS?

2)is it possible to have 2 FB's?-im assuming if so you only recieve +1S not +2

3)what about FB with PF/WC or PW/CC wpn?

 

Also just as a side note, does anyone know any fluff regarding Kjarl Grimblood? Theres a brief mention of him in the old codex but all it really divulges is that he has a big fist. (its in the story on logan grimnars page about the squabling wolf lords)

1 - Nope, sadly, SS takes that away. It's in the write-up.

2 - 2 FB's do not stack Str bonus.

3 - WC's must be in pairs to gain +1 Atk. PW/CC is +1 Atk as it's two CCW's according to the rules.

Welcome. If you're taking a SS, you can go with Runic Armor as well so he takes up less space in a Transport, and fit more Wolves inside with him.

 

As far as weapon loadouts go, that's a real if. I want to take the FB for the added strength, but the reroll and need 5's seems a little hard as well (Vs. T6). So it's down to what is going to be more reliable. That's going to take a little doing.

How often do you expect to run up against T6? Nids and Wraithguard are all I can think of that have it.

I'll refrain from pointing out that Frost Blade + TWolf gives you S6, making it only a 4+ vs T6 (oops! Well, I was going to refrain...)

if you're sweating T6, try shooting it with plasma or using power fists (not on the IC! Take it on the Wolf Guard!).

 

Storm Shields on IC's are awesome sauce. Take them, love them, never leave home without them (unless you're a Rune Priest!)

I myself am going to be taking 1 Rune priest with his Runic Weapon - Of Course - With a regular old bolt pistol, and a wolftooth necklace.... Yahda Yahda Yahda a boring old Rune Priest... But I don't really worry much about him as much as I do my Close Combat characters. I am dressing my Wolf Lord up with a ThunderWolf mount, Frost axe and bolt pistol, Melta bomb, Runic Armour, Belt of Russ, And last but not least a Runic Weapon... I am just experimenting right now.... Hope I get lucky, If I do then say bye bye Dumb Ol' Dark Angels :P Praise Russ!

i actually like how the FW/SS look, but i would ask the question of why not go with RA over TDA, for the same points you get an extra save against psykic stuff.

I'd grab a Chooser of the Slain before a Wolf Tooth Necklace. Anti infiltration and all that.
