Gothical
This is a pretty broad question, but originally I was thinking in the case of Terminators. The facts: 1) Combat Squads allows Terminators to split into 2x 5-man units. 2) This choice is made when you "deploy the unit". 3) Terminators can be placed in reserve and use Deepstrike 4) The Combat Squads must be deployed at the same time 5) Drop Pods are a specific exemption that allow you to split the unit once it disembarks from the Drop Pod. The question: If you were wishing to Combat Squad a 10-man Terminator squad, how would it be handled? You can't split them prior to Deployment, therefore would not roll Reserves for each Combat Squad separately (as that would entail the possibility of them not being "deployed" separately - unless saying they're going into reserves counts as "deployment"? So, would you: A - roll for reserves, it comes up, say that you are using "combat squads" and place/scatter each half-unit separately? B - roll for reserves, place & scatter the unit normally, then separate it into two units once it's final resting place, the "deployment", is designated? But this got me thinking - how does Combat Tactics apply to *any* unit that arrives from Reserves (say...rolling onto your home board-edge). Do you split them before they arrive "on table", thus arriving at different points, or can they only be split after the single unit arrives on the table at a certain location? How would this be handled if you wanted half the squad to arrive embarked on a Transport? Sorry, there may be an obvious answer to all these that I've overlooked, but it's 2.30 in the morning (or near enough) and I'm quite befuddled right now. Frosty the Pyro
A - roll for reserves, it comes up, say that you are using "combat squads" and place/scatter each half-unit separately is your answer You may not have half a squad deployed in a transport from reserves, because when you put something in reserves (which is done isntead of deploying them) you must declare the method, weather they are embarked, and if any IC are with them, this decision may not be changed (except with the case of tyranids using a trygon tunnel). Therefor if you want the squad to enter embarked in a transport they cannot combat squad (with the afformentioned exception of drop pods). Gothical
A - roll for reserves, it comes up, say that you are using "combat squads" and place/scatter each half-unit separately is your answer Ok thanks. You may not have half a squad deployed in a transport from reserves, because when you put something in reserves (which is done isntead of deploying them) you must declare the method, weather they are embarked, and if any IC are with them, this decision may not be changed (except with the case of tyranids using a trygon tunnel). Therefor if you want the squad to enter embarked in a transport they cannot combat squad (with the afformentioned exception of drop pods). Ok then (so you can't declare Combat Squads from Reserves, as you know both will arrive at the same time). In that case, do you have to deploy the whole unit, then combat squad, then re-embark next turn; or can you chuck 5 of the Marines out in the movement phase that the Transport arrives and leave the other 5 embarked? ++EDIT++ Never mind, being a muppet - forgot that you couldn't split the unit during the game. breng77
You cannot split a squad getting out of a transport. If you want to combat squad it must be as soon as the unit is placed on the table not after it has moved, so no splitting out of a vehicle.
