Thunderwolf Cavalry on Tyranid mounts?

I know it sounds stupid at first glance but bear with me.

In neurology there is a syndrom known as "neglect". It happens when a certain part of the brain becomes disabled. The effect is that perception of everything to one side of the person becomes almost non existent.

Now lets assume a Tyranid gets jumped by a pretty mad Space Wolf and just by chance recieves a Frost Blade hit to the head. At once the Nid loses perception of his upper body and everything above, thus does no longer realize theres someone on top of it.

Critically damaged and abandoned by the hive mind the nid proceded to slaughter everything in his way, while its rider struggled to evade deadly limbs. Shortly after this hard fought battle, won by the wolves, the tale of riding a Nid through a horde of enemys was born.

Meanwhile in some hidden cellars of the fang a Wolflord provided food and shelter for an almost dead Nid. Why he would do so is unknown. A few months later specific instructions were handed to select members of the Wolf Guard including a detailed model of a wounded Nid-head.

Often there are rules and models you like. Personally I have made wolf mounts counting as bikes a few years back and don`t feel like doing it all over again. Additionally I am strongly tempted to buy some of the great Nid models for converting and painting, but don`t want to start a third army. So what do you think?

TWC riding on Raveners? What Nids would you use as mounts? Reveners might fit well fluff wise as they are described as vanguard being a lot less smart then Warriors.

It might be a better idea to say that the nid beasties are lobomised and fitted with shock chips in their brains to make them compliant. If you wanted a backstory you could have the theory be that the first ones captured was by a radical inquisitor who wanted to turn 'nids on themselves, the space wolves where sent in to stop him doing heretical work but they decided actually it was a great idea and took the beasts for a test drive!

You'd need something fairly hefty to carry a space marine, I'd suggest maybe a nid warrior? If you build them so they're the kind with just claws and modelled them more prone than standing up straight it'd make them look like they're running faster than normal. A ravener might be able to work but I'm not sure if it would look good having a marine on top or if it would look a bit unballanced.

I just considered, well not seriously, running carnifexes. Guess how that Nid player would look, when I have more then him. Something like ... 15! :D And it would be cheap too, because the Carni bases would be just right. Ok maybe not cheap.

Or maybe go for straight overkill and make Tervigons for mounts... <evil laughter>. It might explain a Gauntscreen substituting for Fenrisian Wolves.

NO I WONT...

NOT.

I might even magnetize the riders, so playing pure Nids (HERESY!!!) would be a future option. Maybe Wolf Lord on Tervigon, 2x5 TWC on Warriors, 15 Gaunts as Wolves.

Fluff-wise, it's pretty non-functional. If enough of its brain worked for instinctive behavior to take over, enough of its brain would be working for the Hive Mind to reassert control as soon as it entered Synapse range. Remember that the Hive Mind can actually make (limited) contact even with non-Tyranids (Tigurius being the only human to ever touch it directly and not die horribly, as I recall), and the warrior forms are designed purely to respond to more powerful creatures. On top of this, Tyranid warrior forms are often not bred to live very long, dying and being reconstituted after fulfilling their function. You might be able to "ride" one by getting on its back and not dying, but you couldn't viably keep it as a pet afterward.

I mean, come on! That'd be like Space Marines allying with Necrons against a common enemy and then parting ways amicably... wait...

Modelling-wise, HILARIOUS! I'd love to see the model you come up with.

Acctually... I think maybe something more along the lines of a relative to the Kraken, or the "Catachan Devil". Both creatures are supposed to be something that has evolved, on its own, free of the hive mind, after being abandoned by the Hive Mind on some forgotten planet (From memory there is a few other similar stories, Vash your more likely to remember then me :P).

I think perhaps if you explained the fluff as while assisting against an Ork uprising on Catachan, or while scouring for recruits on Fenris, a SW unit happened across one of these break-away species. Much as a bear, lion, tiger, or wolf, these are intelligent, but dangerous creatures. However they CAN be "tamed", to a degree, and as Beef said, if anyone in the Imperium had the balls to pull off something like this, it would be the Space Wolves :(.

Not having had a good look at the new Nid models yet I couldn't really recommend a particular model for use, and I think perhaps the size of the Ravagers may be a bit small, but could be a good base to work from. I'd have a talk to any nid players in your area, see what spare bits they have as well. Your not trying to make an acctually Ravager, so if you change a few bits around and make them look fairly different, it would help to sell the idea of them being an abandoned species that has since evolved free of the hive mind.

++++

@ Stormshrug - Acctually I have to say your wrong about Tyranid Warrior forms not surviving long on their own... entire planets have undergone exterminartus, then decades later have had Imperial colonials sent in to start rebuilding, only to lose all contact with these teams due to Nids that have acctually survived the exterminartus and gone into hibernation. Not only that, but our own Kraken, and the Catachan Devil are perfect examples of Tyranid Warrior forms that have survived free of the Hive Mind and continued to evolve and adapt on their own.

Ha this is funny I was going to make a similar thread today.

Was looking at my gf's tyranids and she had a spare warrior so I blue tacked the scything talons so it looked like the warrior had six legs balancing on the blade tips and it looked really good. The marine fits on very nicely but you need to cut the tail though to make it look decent.

I'm thinking of trying this with some ravoners.

For those thinking of a plausible way for space marines to ride tyranids I just say they killed the hive mind and the chapters psykers use their powers to take over the tyranids and I will be using hormagaunts for fenrisian wolves.

This was brought up already with a trygon IIRC. I honestly don't know what to think until I see a model. I'm not one to hold the creative juices of modelers back, so I say go for it and show us what you have done. With regards to what kind of tyranid, I would try and model one in the vein of cavalry with four or more legs, but a slithering creature would also work at this point. Also, from an aesthetic point of view, whatever tyranid you choose try to elongate it's head to give it a beast of burden look. When the head of the beast is not larger than that of the rider it tends to look odd.
I want to see that conversion. And as suggested earlier, Kraken-cavalry would be the best, since it is plausible fluff-wise. I think even Russ himself could accept them. (Atleast after you has given him a few barrells of the strongest mead you can find. ;) )
Whilst I generally support the creative side of the hobby I'm afraid, personally, this just screams "NOOOOOOOO!!!!" to me. Even a non-conformist chapter such as the wolves would not, in my humble opinion, make such a stretch of the imagination as this. We ride giant wolves into battle for Russ' sake, which is pushing it should the Inquisition decide to investigate. Astartes exist to protect and defend humanity from threats within and without and, if discovered, ideas such as this would not only bring retribution from the big =I= but Logan himself would banish you from the Fang (at the very least).

This makes me want to see Grimnar himself riding a 'Nid. First thing that sprung to my mind.

Here you go,

And this with the tail I'm thinking of having.

Was also thinking of havign 2 small talons at the front like the araknids from starship troopers.
