Just Starting Space Wolves

Hello Denziens of the B & C.

I have decided after much delibriration to start an army of the Space Wolves Chapter. I do have a couple of questions, that I thought some of you could help me with.

1. I have received the Space Marines Megaforce for my birthday and was wondering how much of this I could use? And how could I make the models more "wolfey?"

2. What is the Space Wolves relationship with the Inquistion, Sisters of Battle, and Grey Knights?

3. Besides the codex, what should I look into buying to help start my army?

Thanks in Advance

Lets see...

1)Thats a predator, a rhino, a dread, 20 tacticals, 5 assault marines, and some scouts right?

So that sounds like its all usable. I would reccommend getting a SW battleforce so you can mix and match some bits, and make about 30 Grey Hunters, 15 Bloodclaws, some Wolf Gaurd and some Characters. Itll also give you some wolf bits for your scouts :). If thats out of your price range, a single "Wolf Pack" box has more than enough wolf stuff to make two squads obviously wolves.

2) Its strained. We get along very well with the Grey Knights, while the church- and thus the sisters of battle- were on very poor terms with us. At one point they even tried to invade Fenris! Spoiler: it didnt go well for them. Inquisitors are highly individual people, and as such each has their own opinion and relationship with our chapter... some will get along fine, others avoid, and some accuse us of mutation and heresy.

3) I would fully reccommend getting the SW Battleforce, a Rune Priest model, and a Devastator box. With what you have thatll be enough to make 1,000pt armies to try out while you get a feel for things and give you enough bodies and options to expand straight up to 2,000pts once you decide if you want to use Rhinos, Drop Pods, or footslogging forces.

I would suggest either borrowing or proxying some transports to try out, and if youve done any kind of modeling you might check out some tutorials on how to make your predator interchangeable with a Rhino- theyre the same basic kit, the predator just has more bits tacked on. If you make the sponsons removable and the top hatch exchangeable youll have two rhinos, or the option to use a predator when you want it.

Once youve been gaming for 5-6 months and have atleast a dozen or so games under your belt then look at specialist things like thunderwolves, more transport options, landraiders, etc. While all of those can be really fun, theyre often a bit pricey and wether or not they work for you is a matter of personal taste.

I hope that helps, welcome to the fang Bloodclaw ;). Ales in the back.

Edit: Oh yeah, and a couple of tips:

Rhinos, Razorbacks and Whirlwinds are almost the exact same kit, with different turret options. If you want rhinos, buy razorbacks or a whirlwind so you can have either at your disposal. If you get them as part of a kit, well its not a bad deal.

And dont glue your Dreadnaughts weapons onto him. Theyre easily swappable if you just dont glue them, and they can also be removed during a game to represent "weapon destroyed" results he might suffer... wich is darn handy.

Lastly, just a personal superstition- train your dice. Let them know what you want them to do, and always keep them facing 6's up to reinforce the idea. My armor saves and shooting record shows some correlation, even if it is just a hokey myth. Just ask my gaming group.

I would recommend getting a space wolves box set, it comes with enough bits that if you mix and match bits you can wolf up a ton of models...

Which would go well with your Mega force.

It also has bits that make it easy to create a wolf priest or rune priest.

Other than that, some basics.

Termies

Long fangs

Rhinos

Well CC scouts are a powerful option, but Sniper Scouts arent bad in the SW codex either. Not an option you see alot of people taking, but not bad. I would switch them if I had a friend who wanted snipers, but if itsnot readily available Id just make them as a now-and-again unit.

Well, this might be good news, I hope.

I have a friend who wants to get Assault on Black Reach and I get the rulebook and marines for $25. The question I have is, are these suitable for Space Wolves, because they do seem pretty plain?

Just cut the tactical insignia off with an exacto blade, or carefully sand them off, and attach the occaisional wolf tail or combat blade and theyll do alright... just be sure to mix them in with other squads, so their static poses dont show as much.

The really cool part of that set is actually the MM Dreadnaught, wich is a nice option to have and nearly impossible to get otherwise.

He is really great and easy to "wolf up", but otherwise with some patience You can easily get him on ebay for ~6-10 pounds + shipping.

So, I guess I'm "stuck" with it.

That's not a bad option btw. You get a nice mix of tactical marine legs around SW, so that not every single Grey hunter looks like a wolf guard. That is actually what GW expects You to do - mix the parts between tacticals, hunters and devastators. Grab yourself a devastator box for long fangs and if You can afford - SW battleforce, if now - just a SW pack sprue. WG Termies can wait, trust me.

I just ordered the Space Wolves Battleforce, a Rune Priest Model, and a Devastators Box.

I am debating to buy a Predator/ Vindicator/ Whirlwind sprue, to make my 2nd rhino interchangeable to one of them. What would you guys recommend considering I already have one Predator?

Also, I have a friend who plays Tyranids, and he gave me the Terminator Sprue for free. I'm sure I will have to convert and Green Stuff it; so I shall wait before I decide to insert those termi's into my army.

Whirlwind is the simplest way - You only swap the top hatch to switch from Rhino to Whirlwind. I'd suggest You taking Terminus Ultra Land Raider upgrade sprue from GW site, cause:

1) You get Razorback twin-linked lascannon turret, which gives You instantly a Razorback ;P;

2) You get Predator sponsons with lascannons - this way You can glue together the sponsons for Annihilator and Destructor and just can switch them before the game. This is simplier than bothering with magnets on the guns themselves.

As for termies - they come from which set and what weapons they have? Maybe You will still need that WG box later for wolf claws, chainfists and heavy staff.

Whirlwinds are amazing.... especially if your going to be fighting nids on a regular basis. Str 5/AP 4 will kill any little bug dead in a hurry, and the ability to switch over to ignoring cover saves is often invaluable. Its also pinning, wich doesnt come up alot because of synapse but can be helpful against alot of armies.

Its also one of the simplest sets to interchange between rhinos and whirlwinds... so I would go that way.

Wow.

Umm... yeah, those are really really pretty models, and worth a bit of cash, but very definitely modelled as Blood Angels. Id save those for later. Like after youve been modeling for the better part of a year and know if you want to use them or trade them or hold onto them for posterity.

If you get the Aobr set youd be suprised what you can do with them.

Heres a couple of AOBR models i have converted.

These are my first ever models of any kind, so if I can do it im sure youll be fine...

And again every one of these is an AOBR model.

Spazmonkey

Funny, I did the same conversion with the assault cannon and wolf claw with the AoBR termie :tu:

Also , it is an interesting idea on the dread on the left - does the additional plate resemble extra armor?

Yeah that was my first and hardest conversion...

Once i lost the fear of trying things it was all on.

a good 60% ofmy army is converted in some way.

The dread.. kinda looks more like a trophey than extra armor to be honest....

But that more to do with painting than anything... It could be painted to look like part of the Dread/EA or painted to looks like an attached trophey..

Im gunna try for EA i think....

Am yet to wolf out the other one....

Also to the OP... here is a totally un altered AOBR Marine painted as a space wolf.

Even without wolfish parts there is no doubting he is a space wolf...

Even if he is about to be stripped....

Dont hate the painting to much, its the first model I ever painted

Am yet to wolf out the other one....

The wolf head backpack rack on the front plate makes wonders :tu:. I did this with my AoBR dread, as well as the wolf pelt from the old SW sprue.

I did something like the guy here

I think ill do that... and a huge dread size wolf pelt..

I wanna use green stuf cloaks joined by chains to make a big dread cloak....
