THIS...IS...FENRIS!

Night Runner

Recommended Posts

Well that is what I would expect if they ever met? But who knows, they might shake hands and fight a bunch of Tyranids! It seems there is precedent with another fluff-warped SM codex! :)

But enough of that. This is my Wolf Priest. I usually don't post my mini's here in this thread, I usually just post them in my blog, but this is my first attempt at a major conversion at this scale. I am not very confident when it comes to sculpting and major conversions because of the heroic scale thing which drives me up the wall. So I would like some feedback from the community of the B&C, especially the Space Wolf forum.

So please if you have any comments on any mistakes or general critique, or if you would have changed something, or maybe there is something you don't like or if something is not convincing you I would really like to read your comments. It really doesn't matter if you are an experienced modeler or painter or if you suck or just a newbie. I am interested in all your views and opinions.

If I am to improve I believe that understanding what my fellow hobbyists like and dislike would be very important at this point in my progress. Also I can assure everyone that I am my own harshest critique so I assure you I will not be offended by any criticism that you might think harsh. I have just spent an hour last night being pounded for all my mistakes at the Society of Scale Modelers and I can assure you they are no joke when it comes to thorough criticism.

Just for your info, I have opened a similar thread in the WIP section for non-Space Wolf players. I thought it would be a good experiment to see what the Wolves think vis-a-vis everyone else.

Having said that I do hope you all like it :), and there are more pics in my blog for anyone who is interested.

Regards

NR

DUDE! thats awesome 8D that mask looks like the sutton hoo mask, whered you get the bit? i really dig those greaves and pointy shoes! i gotta say tho that like an above poster, the helmet looks a little reptillian, i dunno if your past the point or what, but adding to the brow ridge and reducing the gums (or enlarging the canines?) could fix it? HOWEVER i am noob at the greenstuff, all i can do is plug gaps and such. :D

Edit: forgot to say, Well Done.

Well, let's see...I really like the Crozius. The Narthecium on the arm with the Plasma Pistol looks alright, but I'm not sure it really is appropriate for a Wolf Priest since we don't have that piece of kit (hell, the Wolf Priest doesn't even have Healing Potions & Balms anymore). I'm not sure about the metal head sticking out of his abdomen (reminds me of Kuato, from Total Recall). I really don't like the model's head; it looks like it should be on a Sleestak and is definitely not appropriate for a Space Marine.

First and foremost I would like to thank everyone who took the time to comment. It is very much appreciated. Overall it was what I expected after last night's session at the Society of Scale Modelers. This points I received there and here quite match up. So let me answer some of the point raised.

@Kapturoswki - Thank you. There are more pics in the blog.

@littlebitz - Thanks for the nice comment. I hopefully will be painting it soon since I currently don't have a painted HQ for my new Space Wolf army.

@whitewolfmxc - A fellow Aussie! G'day to you too. You are absolutely right about the head- unfortunately. Everyone points to it rather saurian look. I have to think about what to do about it. As for the head attached to the armour, I wanted something besides a book which I didn't think would suite the SW since I see them as adhering to an oral tradition. So I thought an icon would be more fitting - something warrior based like an ancient helm or artifact. I came up with that for better or worse. Thanks for your candid comment. Made my day! :D

@Natanael - Well spotted. It is actually an incorrect angle of the left leg. I didn't notice it till it was too late to change it without taking several other things apart, so I left it. Such a thing would not have happened if I was building a 54mm figure. Goes to show how green I am to this scale when it comes to sculpting and modelling.

@ Arcus - Some friends told me it was from an old 25mm Thunderbolt mini. I honestly do not know. The shield is nice as well and i want to find a way to incorporate it into the army as well. Whether you are a noob or not your suggestions make sense. Thank you for your advice.

@Grey Mage - Thanks for the comment. The crozius was my third attempt at it. I still think it is a little too big though, but I guess at this scale you can get away with such things. As for the helmet you are spot on. The problem seems to be the front part. Since it is the most criticized part of the mini, and with good reason, I might either make a new one (this time with more reference) or re-make the front. I'll have to think about it.

@Valerian - Thanks for the comment Valerian. As regards the Narthecium it is only for the look. On my blog I stated that the intention was just to give the idea of his role, so I used the Apothecary torso, back pack and Narthecium with modifications to indicate his slightly divergent duties as a Wolf priest opposed to a normal Chaplain. I have to admit I had to google Kuato and Sleestak, I just couldn't remember who or what they were. Made me laugh though when I saw them :P I agree with the helmet it does look saurian, but kuato - come on! :P Anyway thanks for taking the time to comment I really enjoyed your post.

Well thanks to everyone. It was what I wanted and needed. I hope more comments come along. These are my first steps in this direction with this model and the diorama I am currently building in this scale. I honestly feel like I have started from scratch, but I think I'm on the right track. Hopefully this will be the beginning of better models yet to come. But I will leave that to your judgment.

Regards

I think it looks fantastic man. Best Wolf Priest conversion I've seen. As for the reptilian appearance of the helm...I think its the ridge on the top of the skull that does that...maybe the shortness of the snout as well.

I like the norse helm face on the chest personally.

Nice, is their any chance of a tutorial on the legs coming out?, I tend to try model old armour on averything, Space Wolves ,Salamanders and Thousand Sons, but that just kind of makes mine not look that good, did you use a beakie as the basis of the head?

About the legs: there is no way to just make his left leg a little more upright, not so angled out from his body. I can see that it would take some work, but you might be able to cover up some with the cloth he has between his legs. You decide, but It just feels sad that such a lovley model should not be perfect :tu:

Just when I thought that nothing could make my hobby cravings worse than leaving all my models at home during my last term at uni, I see this. Damn you Night Runner!

I think you've got the perfect mix of Apothecary and Chaplain in there to show his dual role within the chapter.

The only thing I can see that *might* be an issue is that his left leg sticks out sideways at a bit of a bizarre angle. It might not be as noticeable whilst painted and I presume I've noticed the same thing that Natanael did. I see what people mean about the helmet skull, but I just saw it as if he had taken a skull as a trophy and had it fixed to his helmet. It makes a nice change to every Wolf Priest having Ulrik's helmet though.

But this is just epic. Purely epic.

I think you'll just have to post it to me for some 'extra inspections'......

I love this model.

First off the fluff is often refers to the SM fighting this army of Saurions or that army of unaligned aliens (xenos) so I think the skull is just perfect.

As far as the Narthecium goes I say "Why not," after all the Space Wolves is one of the oldest intact chapters, it never split and then resplit itself into smaller chapters, excluding the Wolf Brothers of course. They are bound to have odd bits of kits here and there than any other.

Cant wait to see how you paint this.

As far as the leg goes, hey he is in a combatant pose, things happen that dont look right in combat all the time. But if it works, who cares!

Once again thank you all for posting. So let me get started.

@ Emperor's Scourge - I agree with the ridge on the top of the skull. Well pointed. I think it will have to go. With regards the shortness, I'm not so sure. I used the 'beaked helm' as a basis, and I don't think it should be too much longer than that. I glad you liked the helm on the chest. I kinda got mixed reviews on that. Anyway thank you for commenting and pointing out the ridge problem.

@Karack Blackstone - Thanks for the comment. Practice makes perfect or it will drive you insane, a risk you will have to take with GS. ;)

@Lord Ragnarok - B) Good one (I'm sure the Doc will be impressed with what he finds!). Thanks and I'm glad you liked it.

@Rune Priest Ridcully - Yes the basis was the 'beaked helm' (forgat its name). I will try and fit in a tutorial, but it depends on time. A luxury I am currently lacking with two jobs and a uni degree by correspondence. But I'll tell you one thing, a lot of the work on the legs is by sanding down, first with medium sand paper , then fine. In order to get good sanding results with GS you need to mix it with other epoxy putties that cure like stone (1:1 or 2:1) - for example miliput, andrea sculp, magic sculp or apoxie sculp. Hope this helps for now and thanks for commenting.

@Natanael - Thanks for your concern. After your first comment on it I went about seeing if it could be done without too much damage. Unfortunately, in my rush to finish it, I glued on most of the parts around the leg, like the horn and arm making it difficult for a blade to maneuver. Another amatuer mistake. In hindsight I would have done things very differently. At least the mistakes have served the learning curve! Thanks again.

@The Fenrisian - Then I strongly suggest you stay away from the Fang altogether, there's some great stuff here sure to put you into a depression . I like your idea about the trophy thing, and since I wont be throwing it away, I might use it with that scope in the future. But I think after all the work I put into the model it, I might as well try making a new helmet and see how it goes. If the second turns out simian then I will definitely go with your idea :D . Thanks for the post, I enjoyed it.

@spjaco - Thanks for the comment and I'm really glad you like it so much. It vindicates the effort put in to it. I share your opinions with regard to the Narthecium. I think it helps define his role, even if in game terms it doesn't do a thing. With regards to the leg, thanks for the defence, but it is really a mistake, and a silly one at that. Unlike the skull which was an honest effort gone slightly off track, the legs were something I really should have paid more attention to. If I don't manage to fix it, then the pose will serve as a remainder of what happens when you don't take the time to regard your work properly before proceeding to the next step.

Thanks again to everyone.

Regards and good health,

NR

@Grey Mage and Beef - No I don't, but I do have some RTV rubber I can use. I guess it wont hurt giving it a try. I'll post it up when the mini is painted with both heads (I have started a new head this weekend). As for selling, that is an ambition I have for the future, I admit. Kinda like a side job and something to fall back on. At the moment I'm not very confident with my skills so I'll wait a few years till I have enough experience and skill under my belt.
