Good tactics/units against Eldar?

A couple of things I'd suggest.

With only 1000 points to use, I'd forget about taking a special character, they're a lot of points and their special abilities really only shine in larger games with more units that can be affected. Dante and Astorath are both almost 1/4 of your points allotment. Just take a vanilla HQ and put some decent gear on him. Probably save you a fair number of points.

Just for future reference, termies can't fit in Rhinos, ever.

I'd avoid taking lots of big points units and just rely on the innate speed and mobility of the BAs. RAS as troops choice with Descent of Angels. Baal preds are relatively cheap, fast vehicles with scout ability. 18" move Rhinos can be really useful, assuming they don't get popped early by a friggin lance weapon.

One thing that would be totally devastating is drop podding dreads or VV behind Eldar vehicles. VV with a good mix of shooty and heavy assault (thunder hammers, power fists) have a good chance of deploying behind a vehicle and destroying it. Yay for Heroic Intervention.

And don't overlook sang priests to give your army some extra durability and oomph. Can take up to three to spread among units as needed. And I've heard they're really potent if stuck in with an assault termie squad.

best choice against banshees is to not fight them. they'll be in a transport practically always. drop the transport and let them take two turns getting to your lines while you wipe out his scoring units with weight of fire.

And in Annihilation games ? Or if they are contesting my objectives ? Or just behind a scording units I need to kill ? Sooner or later I'll have to do something about them.

We play small (< 1000 pts) games, and the base of my army are 2 10-men Assault Squads with Jump Packs, that leaves enough points for one or two support units max. One assault squad can't really survive one round of combat with 10 banshees, which is why I was thinking about stuff to block them like Furioso Dreadnoughts. Is it really a bad idea?

Unless its a furioso librarian I wouldnt expect it to catch them unless your very good with unit positioning- your best bet is a Baal Predator with heavy bolter sponsons- hit on a 3+, wound on a 2+, kill outright.

Well against Eldar and Banshee Wagons in particular I'd suggest a Dreadnaught with two Twin-Linked Autocannons for weapon arms. 4 twin-linked strength 7 shots a turn is ideal for punching down the light armor the Eldar field and is also decent at mauling infantry. An AC armed Dread has the capability to knock down the Banshee Wave Serpent and then tear apart the unit in a few rounds of shooting.

Hmm... that isnt a bad way to go either, though hard to find the parts for. Do the FW arms fit a standard dread on both sides?

I believe they do, but I'm not 100% sure. It's also not too terribly difficult to convert the Autocannons with a little bit of plasticard or some slightly cut up TL Lascannon Dreadnaught arms.

How do we counter things like shining spears or Eldrad?

Shining Spears? Theyre fast... killy... and T 4 with a 3+ save.

So in other words... bolter fire, autocannons, missile launchers, whirlwinds.... assault cannons, heavy bolters. All the stuff thats good against eldar is still good against these guys.

And sure, theyre fast... but so is most of the BA army. If theyre close, but not close enough to assault you can either move away from them, or assault them yourself- they really are only scary on the turn they assault. After that theyre pansies.

Eldrad... Eldrad is harder. A good psychic hood will do wonders though, and while his magic staff is a power weapon *UNLIKE MOST!* hes still not particularly powerful in CC- just avoid hitting him with a dreadnaught.

  • 2 weeks later...

Recently played a game against my buddy who runs foot slogging eldar. His list was something like

Autarch on jetbike laser lance

3 shining spears

4 warp spiders

5 dire avengers

5 pathfinders

6 harlequins with death jester, troupe master, shadow seer

1 wraithlord

My list was:

1 reclusiarch jp

10 assault marines melta, flamer, pf

10 assault marines melta, flamer, pf

1 sanguinary priest

1 furioso dread talons

1 baal predator assault cannon, heavy bolter sponsons

This was a 1k game and long story short his harlequins and wraithlord won the day for him. I wiped everything else off the board but those two units I could do nothing to. I guess my terrible melta rolls on on the wraitlord didnt help but it just seems like the harlequins were especially untouchable. How am I supposed to fight these units when I cant shoot them nor kill them in cc?
