Muster of the 5th Company

Ultra1k

Recommended Posts

I normally don't post pics of my minis, but I've been working hard the past couple of weeks to finish out my tactical squads (after many years). I had them all out on display, so I figured I'd pull the rest of my 5th Company out for motivation to finish. I snapped a few pics for my gaming buddies, and thought I'd share with you fellow Ultra players. Some of the squads still have yellow shoulder rims for 2nd company as I'm in the process of repainting them in 5th company.

Just my tactical squads

All the Veterans' arms are magnetized, so I can swap out this loadout for others. I'm still working on Magnetizing them, and it's going to be my next project after the Tacticals are done. I plan on running the Cpt with Relic Blade & Storm Bolter for a all-around Cpt.

Enjoy!!!!

Here's a little update:

I've finished my command squad. I've magnetized all the Vet's arms so I can swap out between a HtH outfit, or a Light transport/MC hunter squad.

Funny thing was I was procrastinating on swapping out the heads since I've used this Commander model since 3rd edition. Finally broke down and took the Dremel tool to it this past weekend, and I'm very satisfied on the results.

Next up on my list is their ride, a 2nd edition Razorback w/ Twin Heavy Bolters. gallery_11782_2783_592518.jpg

I'd like to add some "bling" to the model, but not sure what to do, so I'm going to have it sit on my desk for the next few days hoping inspiration hits me on how to make it stand out for my command squad.

Fantastic 5th company so far, loving the old school models, I've tried to slip in a few nods to the older models in my own 5th company, the two rhinos I use for my two "base" tac squads are old marks suitably blinged up with new bits and transfers. Little things like replaced exhausts(used small bits of plastic tube cut at an angle), new style smoke launchers and the addition of a few little detail bits from the ultramarines FW brass etch sheets go a long way to tying the older models in with a new army.

The little things like using the old power saber bit, and old school powerfists really tie your command squad in with your older models nicely, as if there were older marks of equiptment spread amongst the company.

I like the use of crests on your veterans, you have to be careful to not get carried away with them though. No worries as far as I'm concerned you've pulled that bit off nicely. ;)

The twin chainsword guy is silly, "counts-as" BP+ccw vet? ;)

I wish my own 5th company was as far along as yours, I keep getting "distracted" from painting more tactical marines by shinier venue.

It's always great to see another 5th Company player! (I, sadly, only have one 5th Co. Ultra painted)

I really like the use of the crests and Captain backpacks on the command squad, and your Captain looks great. (I am assuming that is your version of Galenus?)

Ultra1k, the company looks to be taking shape. I'm glad to see that you have found your motivation. Those squads, as well as the Commander, are looking good and I really like the crests. We really need to find some time to get a game or two in. Maybe next week?

BTW, all of those Plasma guns are scary! :lol:

Thanks for the comments everyone

@Xeonic:

thanks for marks on the old models. I sometimes think I need to upgrade my minis to the current line, but comments like yours make me stick with what I've got. :P I thought the crests were a nice touch, something extra, but not over the top, and I agree, the twin-chainswords is a bit silly, so he's getting a Bolt Pistol instead.

@khornehunter

I'm not counting him as Galenus(sp). Reason being that I don't want to be pigeon-holed into modeling a particular captain if they ever put out fluff on the 5th (which I kind of hope they don't, let's me make up more).

@whiteflames

I hope we can get a game in soon, table-space permitting. Can't wait to see this squad against your bikes (and a new secret weapon, just ask Pontifex about his Seraphim from last game we played). :P

Nothing much in the way of progress the past week, just finished up my Ironclad, magnetizing the HK's, Assault Launchers, and the Smoke Launchers. I'm holding off on painting until I finish modeling the Seismic Hammer. The standard one doesn't look intimidating enough for me. I'm looking at bits from Privateer Press for options, and have found some good replacements, but haven't made up my mind yet.

I also magnetized the weapons on each arm, just to make it WSIWYG.

On a side note, this was my first plastic dread, and it was SO much easier to work with than the 3 Regular Metal Dreads I own. I think that will be my next painting project, as I use those Dreads a lot in my games. Finally, I used the Hurricane Bolter arm as the basis of my Twin-linked Heavy Flamer arm. What do you think:

gallery_11782_2783_40783.jpg

That TL heavy flamer looks amazing, I actually prefer that to the many flamestorm based conversions I've seen. ;)

I was considering using 2x termie or speeder HF bits staggered side by side ala the FW TLHB turret, but yours is all sorts of shades of awesome so I think I might steal your idea.

Your use of magnets is quite clever as well, I've been magnetizing most of my more recent works both to future proof them and to make it easy to try new things without so much proxying.

On the "old models" vein, this thread made me decide to purchase a large very badly painted RT beaky lot(40 odd figures!) just to include more classic models/bitz in upcoming projects. At least one of my devestator squads will soon be the proud bearer of 4 of the old style streamlined missile launchers. :D

I mean the new missile launcher bits look nice, but the old ones are all sorts of late '70s early '80s streamlined sci-fi cool.

I also plan to have at least one full assault squad with entirely RT plastics beaky heads. ^_^
