Fighting Shrike

I've got an upcoming game against Solid Zaku and he says he's taking a Raven Guard army from the codex, i.e. with Shrike. The battle will be 1500 points at the LGS, whose tables have light to medium terrain.

Any suggestions, warnings of nasty tricks and the like? This is my first major battle against other marines and I welcome all advice.

bring a rune priest with a chooser, and place that around the middle of the table. that will prevent shrike from infiltrating too close.

then deploy in the middle 2ft of the table, leaving a two foot gap on your left and right. this means regardless of which side shrike comes on (if he uses outflank), he wont be able to reach you turn 1 even with his fleet (12 jump move, d6 fleet and 6 charge)

Raven Guard will tend to be more assault-oriented than other codex armies due to their Fleet of Foot Chapter Tactics. Generally, this will be a good thing for grey hunters, who can reliably shoot and counter attack assault marines or scouts. Plan to hold the line and then counter charge with your dedicated assault units. The primary exception to the superiority of your grey hunters is the assault terminator. Assault terminators with storm shields are extremely tough and love to fight elite infantry like your space wolves. They normally ride in land raiders, although Raven Guard players can stick Shrike with them and infiltrate, allowing them to get close to you without spending the points on a raider. A chooser of the slain is a good way to fight this tactic, preventing them from getting into the most advantageous positions. Storm shield terminators aren't as vulnerable to plasma or demolisher cannons or your other anti-power armor and terminator armor weapons, so hit them with mass firepower like rapid-firing bolters and heavy bolters and close combat units with lots of attacks like blood claws, thunderwolf cavalry, and fenrisian wolves. Definitely bring plasma and demolishers to use against the rest of the army, though, and don't be afraid to hit storm shield guys with them if you need to.
Having your own infiltrating scouts could be nice, otherwise... I just suggest drop pods and alot of GHs... and a RP with Tempests Wrath and Murderous Hurricane. Hes going to get the assault more often than not, and by a good margine. Might as well try to take away his advantages while you can.

Okay, lots of infantry, stick to the middle of the board, got it. Umm... why exactly are infiltrating scouts helpful for me?

So here is how the list looks so far

WP w/ jp

2x dreads

wolf scouts

3x gh squads with pg and pf

Skyclaw squad

LS Typhoon

Long Fangs

Basically do the 40k version of a infantry square and let him come to me.

Ah yes. I used to run a 2k shrike list.

The major points have already been covered. A chooser with a Rune Priest will do the trick. Shrike is used for a turn 1 smart bomb strike via infiltrating what ever he wants. If this is hammer terminators then it will hurt a bit, but its so easily stopped by a chooser of the slain. Fleet will simply make them fast but they will still hit like codex marines. Shrike himself has master crafted lightning claws that rend, he has 3 base attacks so 4 with the 2 claws.

Thats pretty much it. If he is a fluffy player he may try and hit you with a pod strike. But either way they shouldnt give you any problems, they are just fleeting marines, and with counter attack that makes little difference.

On the other hand he could bring 3 squads of hammer terminators that will fleet, and then you need saturation of shots to make him roll lots and lots of saves. Its a rare build as Raven Guard are not competitive, although they are fun. But do be prepared for fleeting hammer terminators, i've ran it before and it hits hard.

Uh.

Everyone: Take a Rune Priest and a Chooser of the Slain!

You: OKAY, I'm taking a Wolf Priest with a Jump Pack!

Everyone: D'oh!

Frustrating. If you're going to ask for advice, please, at the very least, acknowledge the most important piece offered.

Drop the Wolf Priest. Get a Rune Priest with Chooser. It'll unravel HALF of Shrike's metagame, and you'll save 15 points.

Sheesh, somebodies cranky. Thats just the list I jotted down real quick while looking at my models collection to see what I had available (yeah, little brothers means that sometimes stuff disappears...) . Seeing as I dont HAVE an even remotely Rune Priest-ly model (something I will fix), the wolf priest will have to do until I can find/make one. It also didn't help that I couldn't remember exactly what that does and I need to find my codex (can you tell I'm just a little disorganised? :) ). Consider advice acknowledged.

@Grey Mage: Oh, that makes a lot more sense now, would only 5 scouts be enough or do I need more?

with counts as supported in 5th ed , you point at a base and it is a rune priest.

Not everyone plays that way Jeske, and the difference between a chaplain and a librarian is a bit more pronounced.

Infiltrate them slightly ahead of your own forces, and then he cant do the same.

Note that this only works when you place first. And you probably want a minimum sized squad if you're going to do this. Too big and it may survive until your turn, denying you the chance to shoot him

Excellent, then my squad is just right. My thanks for the assisstance brothers and I think I'll be able to pick up a rune priest this weekend. I'm going to shuffle the points some so which would be most helpful, dakka pred or whirlwind (I don't think I'll have quite enough for a vindicator as someone suggested, but maybe).

it could be a stone on a base and it would be legal, the way rules are. thats why am not getting the "not HAVE" part . besides dont tell me that the plasm pistol frost ax rune priest that was limited editon is so hugely different from a normal space wolf that it is seen from the other side of the table.

Yeah, count as rule is alternately mildly helpful and extremely vexing, and I try to stay away from it as much as possible. Sorry if it makes me seem a little obsessive/compulsive.

'New' list:

Vafthrudnir the Wise (RP w/ chooser, LL, Stormcaller)

2x dreads 1w/ MM and HF, the other AC and HF

5 wolf scouts, plasma pistols and melta

2x 10 GH w/ plasmas and powerfist

10 GH w/ meltas and powerfist

Landspeeder Typhoon

2x LFs

tank of some sort, what would be best?
