Grimtooth
How specific do you plan out your army in terms of construction? I got to thinking that with my new army, I want every model to be completely unique. In the past, I have gotten in the habit of just burning out during construction and start to "slap" parts together just to get to basecoat. To implement new plan I got to thinking of actually writing out my list and specify each and every bit I will be using on each model. Seem pretty intensive, but I think of when looking down on my army, I would not see a single model looking like another and I would like that. Anyone else done something so planned? Wildfire
Nope. I couldn't care less how my army looks. I don't have the artistic spark to be interested in the modeling aspect of 40k. Beef
No I just put the majority of the rank and file troops in any mish mash way I feel. I only really go for unique in the conversions I do. Coverfire
I have been rebuilding my entire army from scratch since the new models came out and I have tried to make them as individual as possible. I have no two alike in the army, if the head is the same then the armour is different - with the noticeable exception of Wolf Guard who ALL use the Wolf Helmets, so therefore I can't escape double ups there as I have never use green stuff except to mend models. Grey Mage
Theyre all similar enough to tell what they are, but I dont have a single identical model in my entire army. Pose is always a little different, different parts combinations..... Weve got alot of options out there, I see no reason for any two SWs to be identical. Zhukov
Not really specific; I pick parts at random for my troops so chances are I might have running around some Twin Brothers here and there. I dont put a single Model with a Helmet in my army though; they are all bear headed heh. In a strange way Space Wolves wearing helmest feels odd for me... The thunderwolves I'm planning to do will have some more effort put into them though. Oh and ofc I'm not using 2x the GW model for the Rune Priests; thats for the hardcore gamer I am even a bridge too far. Stormshrug
One of the advantages of scratchbuilding all of the models: each one is unique. Admittedly, plenty of that "uniqueness" comes from various failings and errors on my part, but hey, it gives them character! On a more helpful note, greenstuffing some wolf pelts (cloaks of different lengths, tabards, bolter-covers whatever) onto an otherwise uniform squad can do wonders helping to vary them up a bit (and it's pretty easy as tweaks go). -Stormshrug Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/199833-how-specific-do-you-plan/#findComment-2380242 Share on other sites
Taerij
I never plan, I just build and see where I end up :) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/199833-how-specific-do-you-plan/#findComment-2380243 Share on other sites
Wraithwing
I build armies to an army list. I've normally spent anywhere up to a month planning the army list, chopping and changing various aspects. When I've got one I like, I build my models to it. I'm not to fussed with the rank and file troops, but I do try and have a unique HQ or two in any army I do. Decoy
The one thing about Wolves is their individuality. Every Space Wolf is not a simple "Rank and File" trooper like in other armies like Ultras or Templars, but instead, they are each individuals, forging their own Sagas. I model each and every model individually, according to a particular bit of "Fluff" I have in mind for those models. That said, if a model performs admirably, I am not above completely remodeling him, or tacking on bits and pieces to represent his great deeds; I've had a Long Fang Meltagunner remodeled three times; From Meltagunner to Powerfist Storm Claw, from Powerfist Storm Claw to Lightning Claw Wolf Guard in Terminator armor. Lord Clinto
I'm not going so far as to have every model look unique but I do have a few specifics planned. 1. Every model will have a helmet, usually not wearing it but they will be equiped with one. The only exception will be my Wulfen models (13th company & 2 custom) only becuase of the impracticality of them actually fitting their distended faces into them. 2. As per the King novels, most of my Blood Claws will have the "initiate" shaven head with braid. A few of the more experienced Blood Claws may have a top-knot head or the "scared stiff" hair for diversity. 3. Depending on their seniority/age/status, my models will be equiped in different stages of wolfy-ness. For example: Blood Claws equiped with their newly fit armor will basically be "Codex" close combat equiped marines with a very few space wolf breastplates/runes/icons/etc.. for the older Claws. The Grey Hunters will be a mix of "Codex" & the Space Wolf Pack frames. And the Long Fangs & power armored Wolf Guard will be exclusively from the Space Wolf Pack frames. 4. I'm not a fan of the standard Chainsword, though I do like the double-bladed ones from the new SW frames. So alot of my figures will be using regular hand weapons, mostly from the new Chaos Warrior frames. Additionally I like the barbarity of Chain Axes so have a few of them thrown in. 5. Everyone of my Wolf Guard models will have his own unique shoulder pad, they've earned the right for their own heraldry.
