Tactical Squad with a few death company bits

Recommended Posts

After (just) completing my vow I took a break from painting as the last push getting the Ironclad and 5 Space hulk terminators wiped me out.

Ive decided to do something simple but use the skills I picked up doing the terminators so I thought about doing a squad of Tactical marines.

There are some great pieces in the new death company set so Im going to use bits of them on this squad.

First test mini is about done. This is the standard I want to take all the squad to.

And the rest of the squad

Ive managed to get some time in the last week so Ive built and cleaned a couple of minis.

I scored 10 used tactical marines off ebay and after a couple of weeks in a vat of Flash Ive cleaned them up and started rebuilding

Im going to apply the final blue highlights in one go so they are all tied together.

Heres one for those who where collecting when it all started. I enjoyed painting this one.

One thing I cant remember though is about the pad studs.

Are the studs on the pad white or Gold??

Pointy 1 - You there, tie my shoes.

Pointy 2 - because you can never have too many people giving orders

I had a spare SH flamer. So heres my take on a super heavy flamer. Im going to change the hand handle though as it looks odd.

This is one of the best head in the death company box

Very nice painting :jaw:

I don't quite like the "shoe order" guy... I thinks its the head, the jaw doesn't look quite right.

Flamer... I'd have him look to his left shoulder ;)

Thanks for the replies.

And Ive still got the highlights to do before Im done so things should get better. The problem is its soooooo slow to knock out a squad. (Ive got 20 good to go)

The shoe guy has the head of the Baal Predator driver. Its blue tacked in place so it probably looks high.

the flamer guy is the same. Its not stuck on yet so I'll probably do as you suggest. That would help with the uniformity as most are looking left.

I thought Id try something different on this powerfist. I normally just paint them blue but this time Ive tried to give the whole fist a "charged" look.

I wasnt sure if its just the fingers or the whole glove that gets the power so I went for the whole thing.

Let me know what you think.

Highlights, seals, base, pistol still to do.

I also think that is the best head in the Death Company Box. Dose Pointy 1 have 2 powerfists? If he dose that is pure awesome. I think the charged powerfist looks a bit weird, but thats just me. Good looking minis can't wait to see them painted up.

Pretty sharp marines. I love seeing the classical 3rd edition Ultras look. Also a big kudos to shaving off those dumb rivets on that last marine's helmet.

Interesting approach to the heavy flamer. What became of the terminator? Did you use a tactical hand or terminator hand for the handle? Also, do you have plans for a propellant tank or some such thing?

I missed the Space Hulk boxed sets so I ended up buying them individually off Ebay. One of the figures had the wrong arm when it came so I ended up with 2 flamer arms.

The terminators can be found HERE

I used a tactical hand for the flamer. Ive seen it before where people have just chopped the arms at the elbow but it throws the forearm out of proportion as its way longer on terminators and the hands too big too. I completely cut out the arm and hand of the terminator and then put a tactical arm and elbow on. Im in two minds on the propellant. I like the Imperial Guard flamer tanks but I dont know if this will make the figure look too odd.

Thanks guys

With it been bank holiday I managed to get a couple of late nights in and crack through another 2 marines.

This ones about done except for icons and armour highlights.

After previous comments I wasnt sure about the head on this one. With him having 2 power fists and a death company body I wanted him to be a walking tank so I though it was fitting for him to have a Baal Predator's head. I think painting it red works.

What do you think?

Heres with the arms (only first colour wash)

Ive been working through the squad and finished another couple of minis.

I wanted a central figure for the squad so I looked at my AOBR commander but he looked odd so I kitbashed this from bits in my bits box. Its mostly the commander kit but I'll probably add a tabbard or sword later. The white is blutak just holding him together until Ive painted him.

I know the nid armour is a bit overused but I wanted it to have some interest on the base too.

If hes ultra I wasnt sure about the cape. Im thinking deep red outer with white inner and red line trim? Alternatively what about a purple cape? Ive looked online but not found many images of this mini that arent the GW standard paint job.

My commander is about done with the exception of highlights, chapter sign and power claw.

My question is what colour do I do the helmet? Im liking bright red.

Let me know what you think.

That last guy.... I dunno, he looks too skinny. I think it's the lack of the Pack. Try putting the vents from the marine backpack on the sides of the Comms box.

Evening

Ive started another couple for the squad.

I really need some encouragement to do the back packs though. I just cant get motivated to do them.

Here is the latest two. I thought Id have a go at a shaved head and it turned out better than I thought

When the squads finished they may as well ride in style. Ive still got some of the extra armour to add

Ive also won a Land Raider on Ebay so that will be next.

I really like your blue, what did you use for it?

Thanks

Its pretty simple.

Undercoat spray black

Really thin base coat of Ultramarine blue leaving black in the deepest recesses

Black line the armour with .05 marker

Wash with Azurman blue ink

Its then a case of adding ultramarine blue with increasing amounts of white up to the edge of the armour.

What Ive found though is using a wet pallet and blending on the mini works loads better than the days I used to drybrush armour.
