DV8's Project Log

DV8

Recommended Posts

Over the past few months, I find myself undertaking several new projects, and a decent number of them are power-armored. As I am fairly unproductive and lethargic without motivation from the community, this Project Log gives me the perfect opportunity for me to document my work (and actually get stuff done).

Insofar as projects to begin with, here's a brief overview for now:

Legion of the Damned

I began this commission a few months ago and have been working on it off and on in between other projects. I am nearing completion of this project and will post pictures within the next few days.

Logan Grimnar

This is a paintjob commission of the Great Wolf (original Games Workshop model). Quick turn-around on this one, I'm just putting the finishing touches on this bad boy and will get pictures ASAP.

Wolves of Fenris - Display Board

Partially because I have a tournament coming up on May 23rd (but mainly because it's cool and I want one) I am in the works of painting up a display board for my Space Wolves. I stared this thing a while back, but never got around to finishing it until now. I've airbrushed the basecoat colors and have started painting detail.

Wolves of Fenris - "Wolfwing"

Using the prizes from the Golden Bolter competition (Wayland Games and Dragonforge) along with a tournament I won a few weeks back (which netted me a free Space Wolf battleforce), I have built this army pretty much at zero cost (in fact about the only things I have paid for are superglue and sandpaper). It's based around Logan Grimnar and a core of Wolf Guard, but they're not all in Terminator Armor, so I hesitate to consider it a true Wolfwing army.

Angels of Sanguinius

I have purchased Sanguinor, and have 5 boxes of Sanguinary Guard in the mail and en route to me. When the arrive, I will be building and documenting my Sanguinary Guard army here.

Non-Power Armored

Alas I cannot keep track of these here, but I have several other projects in progress that are non-power armored that I will be working on in between everything documented here:

Vampire Counts - I have 20 Skeletons, a Varghulf, Corpse Cart, and about 30 Zombies to finish

Warriors of Chaos - Building a 2000 pt Throgg + Troll list for GW STC's Mighty Empires campaign. A whopping 27 models total.

Imperial Guard - I need to put the finishing touches on 46 Death Korp infantry, and I need to paint 3 Hydras, 2 Chimeras, 1 Demolisher, 2 Valkyries, and 2 Vendettas.

Ragnar's Great Company

Once the above are well underway, I intend to build Ragnar's full Great Company. I already have 60 Astartes and a small core of vehicles finished because of my original Space Wolf army, and with the Wolfwing list will be able to bring that number up close to 100. This brings me about halfway to my goal, plus the addition of armored support. This'll be long-term, probably over the next year or two, and I plan on expanding my army by building various "lists" using the codices to figure out what units I'll add. After I finish my Wolfwing and Sanguinary Guard armies, I will be building a biker-heavy/themed force using Codex: Space Marines, and represented as Space Wolves, and I already have 12 Bikes, 3 Attack Bikes, and 2 Land Speeder Storms set aside for that. Benefit too is that I can recycle a great number of my existing units and reuse across my various armies. But I'll expand on this down the road.

For now, to whet your appetite.

Loving the display board, with the drop pod at an angle, brilliant addition.

I have to say I love your painting.

Also, I second the knowledge of the manufacturer of those dice. (Shame they're in breach of IP :() So mods will probably say "No"

Yea the Drop Pod is featured in all my lists, so I definitely wanted it on my display board. I have it at an angle on the far left to balance out the slant of the roof on the opposite far right, and at equal heights the board is actually quite balanced, regardless of where I put my models. The building on the far left has been assembled, "damaged", and will be painted as if a Drop Pod has literally just smashed right into it and disgorged it's contents as the rest of my army rolls up in style.

I've just finished Logan Grimnar. Client wanted him done in the "traditional" blue-grey scheme favored by 'Eavy Metal. An interesting one for me since it's my first time painting a Space Wolf in blue-grey armor, and I must say it looks rather catching. It's a brave man who takes to the field in baby-blue power armor...

Saying that Logan Grimnar (or indeed any Space Wolf) is brave is like saying Khorne like's to occasionally hit people.

That is one awesome paint scheme my friend, especially since it was your first go at that colour.

I thought Khorne was quite the lounging couch-pig, spending all his time on that comfy throne of his? So by that rationale... all Space Wolves are cowards? :P

Great job as always, DV, my only suggestion would be to perhaps darken either the hair or the face? Though it may be the lighting, I think the face, hair and wolfhide-cloak are melding into each other a bit too much. Crispness and detail is stellar though!

@Rorschach: I take it you haven't reead the background on that bloodthirster special character in the Daemons Codex.

DV8: Just noticed this at a glance (I may be wrong cause i cant be bothered to check) but I think that you have painted on the Great Wolf symbol backwards, as I said I might be wrong, also whats that star for on his left shoulder, front corner

Finished the Legion of the Damned.

Shown beside the Techmarines are the plates for their Thunderfire Cannons (the client elected to paint the cannons themselves on his own.

@Bloodhowl - It may very well be. I just applied them as they were printed on the transfer sheet. I'll have to confirm when I start working on my own Wolfwing army. As it is, Logan is off to the client now.

Up next is the display board!

I got my boxes of Sanguinary Guard in the mail last week, and went on a bit of an assembly frenzy on Thursday and Friday. Weekend has kept me busy with birthdays and baptisms galore. But that's another story for another day.

Commander Dante, 4 units of Sanguinary Guard, 3 Sanguinary Priests, a Rune Priest, and 23 pairs of wings (Dante will be receiving custom sculpted wings.

So much to look at! Love the recent additions, especially the rune priest. Really looking forward to seeing the rune priest come along and shots of the other details on him. Is he mostly bits from the wolf pack box ? Love the feel you have given him with the pose and his staff and book.

It's one of the generic Space Marine Librarian models. I simply replaced the staff head with one from Njal to "wolf" it up a bit. I am working on a bit of a deadline, otherwise I would plan a more elaborate conversion to make him more "barbaric" akin to my existing Space Wolf characters.

This is the progress made on the Rune Priest after about 2 hours painting last night:

I brought the model to work on at work during my lunch break, and after another hour:

Stupid Alex (Starks333) keeping me up and distracting me. Ended up staying up late to make up the lost hours (lol).

Started weathering the display base for my Wolves:

Wow...that Rune Priest is smashing! And the display base is great too!

Logan Grimnar is looking amazing too, an immense amount of detail, I love it!

And I am speechless when I look at the LotD army...godly, that's what it is. :D

Can't wait for the next update and your painted BA's!

Okay this is a big update. I got home and powered through the entire Matrix Trilogy and managed to finish my display base. There's a lot of pictures, but hopefully they're worth it. Apologies if some are a little blurry, I only have two lamps and it was tricky maneouvering them around to light it well.

I had one of my brother's ferrets with me, and this little guy decided it would be a good idea to clamber onto my desk and inspect the workmanship of my display base. Thankfully at this point the sucker (the base, not the ferret  ) was varnished (otherwise his grubby little paws would have rubbed cute little footprints into the base)

The finished base without my army on it.

And with. I am very pleased with how the concept of the Speeders hovering/flying over the buildings turned out. Pretty simple to pull off too, I just drilled appropriately sized holes and glued extra clear rods in place to support them. Clever positioning with some of the terrain elements to "wedge" the speeders at certain points keeps them from spinning around like little tops when I go to pick up the base.

This is the army I will be taking with me to the doubles tournament this coming Sunday with my friend (Tau).

From the top. You can see where I sprayed brown/black for where the Drop Pod lands and burns the ground/walls around it with its exhaust/re-entry flames/whatever.

Some more close ups of some of the walls. This was a huge experiment for me, and I definitely learned a lot that I want to apply for my terrain whenever I get around to painting it all.

The piece de resistance! I did stained glass on the windows, using artwork from the cover of Codex Space Wolves (3rd Edition and 5th Edition). The glass has been cut up and glued in position so to mimic the shattering of the glass as the windows blow out from the inside because of the concussive force of the Drop Pod's impact. This took me the better part of 2 hours but it was totally worth it.
