@Commander Alex - naw the ferret would never hold still long enough. He's as ADD as I am.

Yes bike lanes. :whistling: This display base will actually work on multiple levels, since when all is said and done, I will have 3 different Space Wolf armies, one of which is a biker force. Space Marine Bikers...bike lanes? eh eh? get it? Maybe those sneaky Wolf Scouts got ahead with buckets of paint and decided to pave the way for the bikers :D

At any rate, yes I was masking off for the lane lines in the center, and realized that it would look a little "bland" with just those and nothing else on the ground, so I added the bike lanes as a sort of "frame" and to create more "linear" movement on the ground. Plus with the snow and weathering, they're barely noticable.

@Yogi - I am not recording my other non-PA projects anywhere. I left the mess that is Warseer several years ago and do not browse any other forums. At present, I have no intention of recording the rest of them.

With the display base finished, that finishes the current chapter on my Wolves. I am now moving on to the Sanguinary Guard and my Throgg + Troll army.

11:00 am

With today off, I'm looking to see just how much I can get done on my Sanguinary Guard. Here they are, resplendent in their grey plastic glory. Dante will be converted and painted on his own, as I want to lavish the most time on him (although in an army of 24 models each one is pretty much a character in its own right).

Man the weather is gorgeous today. Grabbed my can of Krylon Camo Brown spray paint and went at it. Primed my 4 units of 5 SG, and my 3 Sanguinary Priests. Here they are drying while I prep all my airbrushing equipment and start mixing my colors.

http://www.spacewithinspace.net/images/projectlog/may24_2.jpg

The colors I ended up using:

  • Krylon Camo Brown basecoat/primer
  • Iyanden Darksun (as an initial zenithal highlight/basecoat to give the other colors something a little brighter to adhere to, without losing the brown primer I wanted to help create the initial shadows).
  • Burnished Gold (as the basecoat for my Sanguinary Guard)
  • Vallejo Air Chrome (mixed with Burnished Gold as the highlight for my Sanguinary Guard)
  • Sanguine Highlight (as the basecoat for my Priests)
  • Khador Red Highlight (mixed with Sanguine Highlight as the first highlight for my Priests)
  • Skull White (mixed with Sanguine and Khador as the second highlight for my Priests)

A word to the wise. Metallic paints gunk up faster in the airbrush, requiring you to clean it much more often. Also, ensure you clean the airbrush thoroughly afterwards, or else you'll get metallic flecks in any other colors you use afterwards (and you don't want that metallic paint drying inside your airbrush).

12:30 pm

Present status. Colors have all been laid down, and I'm just updating this project log. Gonna grab some lunch, and then it's down to work.

Whew I have been painting for almost 10 hours straight now, but I've made some great progress on the Sanguinary Guard. The gold is pretty much done, although I may go back after I finish everything just to touch up a few problem spots. I've also started laying down some of the red (playing with some new recipes). Will probably move on to start doing the white eagles tomorrow before I go back and finish up the gems on top.

I must say that I'm blown away by your Space Wolves and the amount of detail on them... ;) truely epic win!

Oh, and could I request to get some close-ups of that converted Sicarius model please? :)

Again, epic work! :)

I'm actually in a bit of a pickle, as I have less than a week and a bit to paint at least 7 Trolls and a Doombull for the Mighty Empires campaign starting the 13th (opening with a mini battalion painting competition, as it were) so that has pretty much consumed my time.

I will, however, try and sneak in some time to photograph my Sanguinary Guard if I get a chance. Rest assured, this log has not been forgotten! I simply have other non-PA things to paint at present.

this stuff is fantastic. I can't help but wonder where you learned how to make a display piece like that. I'm very interested in making my own and I'm blown away at just how much work you put into yours.

Do you have any helpful tutorials or links you can point me towards?

Dan

Love the Wolf Lord! :P I would like to know where you got the bionic arm as I've got the same one, but I can't recall where I got it! :)

Ludovic

It from the Space Marine captain set.

Also really nice log with the Wolves & Sanguinary Guards armies ;) Can't wait to see the finish Sanguinary force.

Thanks IP!

Btw, would you mind sharing you SW armour recipe or not? (I know some artists prefer not to, so if you don't want to, no worries ;) )

Cheers,

The Space Wolves armor is (from Black primer) Codex Grey worked up through Fortress Grey. Washes done with Leviathan Purple, Asurmen Blue, and Devlan Mud to shade, and then touching up the highlights again with Codex Grey and Fortress Grey.

If you actually go to my Youtube account here, I've uploaded a video tutorial on how I paint a marine from start to finish. It's about 2...2 and a half hours in length?

Apologies for not updating this log in over a month (although it seemed like forever). I have been caught up with Fantasy since they've re(released) it, and have been working furiously on my Trolls + Vampire Counts army. I will be busy over the next few weeks with what they tell me is "life". I've been informed it's rather important and shouldn't be neglected, but I have my reservations...

So that being said I'm slowly wrapping up work on my Sanguinary Guard. Hopefully I should be able to start getting pictures up of finished units soon.

Wow it's been so long since I've updated. I apologize, but a variety of things the past few months have kept me away from the painting table. Not to worry though, for I have set myself to a goal: 1 model a day, until I finish my 40k armies. On the table:

Space Wolves Great Company

Blood Angels Sanguinary Guard

Death Korps of Krieg

I have collected just over a battle company in size of Space Wolves (all told about 130 marines and 15 vehicles), plus my small Sanguinary Guard force and my Death Korps force. My Great Company is actually made up of several smaller lists, specifically:

Mechanized, using Codex: Space Wolves

Wolfwing, using Codex: Space Wolves

Biker force, using Codex: Space Marines

Miscellaneous units

The mechanized aspect is already finished, and once I finish my Sanguinary Guard, it's on to the Guard, and then the Biker force. Afterwards I'll just finish up whatever miscellaneous units I happen to have assembled (like my pack of Blood Claws).

I've arrayed the "to do" models on my dresser. Not shown are about another 30 marines, plus 2 Land Speeder Storms. The completed models aren't shown either (sort of a motivational thing, the more I complete, the less and less cluttered that dresser will look). Logan has also since been assembled.

I will grab some better shots tonight.

Hey hey! Fantastic log you got going on here and your work is incredible. I think I saw your Vampire Counts army featured in one of MWG videos on youtube awhile back. I recognize the display base you have in one of your first posts.

I see you airbrush your minis which I've started doing as well. Do you just do a basecoat with the airbrush or do you do your main shadows/highlights with it as well?
