DV8's Project Log

So I primed my Wolf Guard Terminators, but my brother and my friend (zeroeightfive on BnC) bought me a little present:

I give you, the Krakenhold.

I am now morally obligated to devote every hour of the next month on this bad boy:

Progress so far (pistons as yet not attached):

I have a plan for how I want the Warhound to be posed, but I'll save that as a surprise for later.

I have a plan for how I want the Warhound to be posed, but I'll save that as a surprise for later.

Will it be striking a disco pose?

I like Warhounds, and one day I intend to get one.

Also, well done on everything else. Sanguinary Guard are looking spiffy.

Do you have any guidance for building speeders as I see you've built and painted several now? I've got a few to build but am wondering how far to go with sub assemblies before painting? I'm guessing you leave the figures out to allow for painting?

The new Land Speeders fit very snugly in assembly (for which I am ever grateful to whoever decided to redesign them), so putting them together should be of little difficulty. You are correct in assuming that I leave the crew unattached and paint them separately. The gunner's weapon is also attached to them (so dry fit and glue to pose the weapon to the gunner, but don't glue the gunner in himself until you've painted every part of the model).

I actually prefer Reavers, I've never like Warhounds, too square in my opinion.

Ludovic

I prefer the boxier look of the Warhounds, as it fits in so well from an aesthetic standpoint with the majority (re: all) of the Space Marine Vehicles. The head of the Wolf and Lucius Warhounds reminds me very much of a Land Speeder.

That being said, I intend to get my hands on a Mars Pattern Warhound, and if I can find the rules for it, a Reaver as well.

@Metal Apostle: The cape is P3 Beasthide Flesh blended up through Bleached Bone and Skull White. Washes of Devlan Mud are used to shade.

Apologies for slowness or lack of posts. My compressor had decided about a week ago it would be a great time to go poops on me (although a new one I had ordered several days ago arrived last night) so I haven't done much (if any) painting.

I have been assembling the Warhound though, and have gotten quite a bit done. I will snap some pictures tonight to show the progress. Once I finish the base I should be able to start assembling the legs. The issue I'm still having trouble with is balance, especially with the particular pose I have in mind (as it puts a fair bulk of the Titan's weight on one foot).

I'm also keeping a tally of the number of pins I've had to use so far:

Feet (both): 55 pins

Torso (just the shoulder pieces and back plate): 28 pins

Thanks for the reply DV8 :)

That was my thoughts but I thought it worth asking somebody with experience of building speeders first. I feel you're pain with all the pins I'm mixing and matching the new ForgeWorld resin marines with plastic for my wolves...

Any update on the Titan build?

Do you use any kind of varnish coat to finish your minis or are you happy to use them without a final hardcoat? Any prefrence on finish - matt, satin or even gloss?

The Titan has been pinned together, although there is still a lot of Green Stuff work to be done before I can even think about painting it. I've also been working furiously on finishing my Death Korp (should be done by end of next week), which has been taking a lot of my time away from other projects.

I'll snap pics of the Warhound when I get home.

The models are matte varnished with Games Workshop purity seal. And I prefer matte.

Once I finish the Death Korp, it'll be a mixed log of both my Blood Angels, Wolfwing, and my gaming table. I've been in a painting groove lately and the past few weeks have been really productive. Alas most of the work for those past few weeks I can't show on here :tu:

First off, workspace has been re-arranged, cleaned and re-organized.

An idea of the kind of ridiculous pinning I've gone through:

http://www.spacewithinspace.net/images/projectlog/September29_1.jpg

Krakenhold as it stands:

The cockpit:

Yes, these hatches are hinged:

Interior:

http://www.spacewithinspace.net/images/projectlog/November9_7.jpg

Minus the top and armor plates (which are blue-tacked for now...they'll be pinned and glued on after painting:

http://www.spacewithinspace.net/images/projectlog/November9_8.jpg

The weapons are unattached, and are held on by elastic bands for now (so I can use the sucker in Apocalypse games)

Take THAT Leman Russ Punisher!

http://www.spacewithinspace.net/images/projectlog/November9_10.jpg

So at present, I have a grand total of 139 pins in this bad boy:

Head - 4

Torso - 37

Arms - 12

Crotch - 2

Legs - 24

Feet - 60

The head also has 6 magnets so the covering can be removed for showing the Princeps and Moderati.

I'm expecting another 15 to 20 pins at least when I factor in the armor plates and weapon arms.

So I have been busy since the last update. Literally locked myself away for a month painting non-stop to finish my Death Korps. I can't post them here, but I can post a link and suggest that people check them out :woot:

Shameless link!

In power armored note, I have finished Dante and my Sanguinary Guard (pictures to come tonight), but for now, something to whet your appetite:

Apologies for the low res photos, but they were just WIP photos snapped from my iPhone.

Hey hey! Fantastic log you got going on here and your work is incredible. I think I saw your Vampire Counts army featured in one of MWG videos on youtube awhile back. I recognize the display base you have in one of your first posts.

I see you airbrush your minis which I've started doing as well. Do you just do a basecoat with the airbrush or do you do your main shadows/highlights with it as well?

Apologies for never having answered your question Eggroll. I just basecoat with my airbrush, doing some zenithal highlights with it, but beyond that, not much. I'm experimenting with doing shadows and highlights on larger objects (like vehicles, terrain, etc.) but because my airbrush doesn't have a very fine tip, I don't have too much control with it to do anything more refined.

Which works better for me on the infantry anyways since I prefer a brush approach.

@Bloodhowl and Atin

The Warhound Titan is assembled and set aside until my Sanguinary Guard, Wolfwing, Table and Dark Eldar are finished. I want to spend lots of time on it, and it'll be a lot easier on me mentally if I have all my projects finished and out of the way.

DV8

Well it is very beginning stages WIP, so when finished, will be completely sanded out and smoothed, and sculpted on top of. I want to retain in as many elements of the original Mephiston model as possible, but with artistic tweaks (no dress, the cloak will be tattered, no sculpted skill trim on said cloak, etc.)

DV8

Just more quick WIP pictures snapped from my iPhone.

With only Mephiston left, my Sanguinary Guard army is pretty much finished (hereby dubbed "Nipple Wing"), and I'll be (hopefully) playing my first game with them tonight. That means there's only 2 projects between me and reaching my goal of finishing the bulk of my stuff by Christmas.

My gaming table almost ready for paint:

http://www.spacewithinspace.net/images/projectlog/December2_1.JPG

I don't know why I'd never thought of it (as I'd used it for school all the time), but spray adhesive is a thousand times more effective than using super glue, white glue, or even woodland falls scenic cement for afixing sand and flock to terrain bases. Textured spraypaint is also amazingly handy and great for adding another layer of texture without much additional cost. I should be able to jump into priming my table this weekend.

I've also brought my Wolfwing to work and just paint during my lunch breaks:

http://www.spacewithinspace.net/images/projectlog/December2_2.JPG

http://www.spacewithinspace.net/images/projectlog/December2_3.JPG

I've already started doing the purple washes on 8 of the Terminators, and will hopefully be able to finish the armor on these guys by Friday.

PS. I was coerced by coworkers last night into going out for KBBQ, so I didn't get a chance to snap any good pictures of my Nipple Wing. I'll try tonight or tomorrow.

No worries. Fantastic looking projects you got going on. Really looking forward to seeing the table and terrain finished up!
