RogueTrooper
Well i've asked around here at the B&C and seen many of the topics on true scale stuff, so thought i'd atleast try a test marine. And so, i started working on one using reclaimed parts from my bitz collection (tried the nail polish remover to strip the parts aswell - another first) Pics so far - http://i1023.photobucket.com/albums/af358/Mantis_War_1/TSMW1.jpg http://i1023.photobucket.com/albums/af358/Mantis_War_1/SDC11653.jpg http://i1023.photobucket.com/albums/af358/Mantis_War_1/SDC11656.jpg I know i still have alot to do, especially to the legs - (working on the arms just now) Got abit to do getting things smooth and such aswell. I have the idea of doing a Mantis Warrior force, in the subtle Samurai theme that is displayed on the BoLS Badab artwork. So any ideas/suggestions/comments will be welcomed. ;) Thanks Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/200919-true-scale-mantis-warriors/ Share on other sites

RogueTrooper
Cheers, you are one of the masters doghouse. I havent used GS before for anything other than basic filling, so the sculpting side is quite difficult for me. Some more pics of how i think this guy will look in the end. http://i1023.photobucket.com/albums/af358/Mantis_War_1/SDC11658.jpg http://i1023.photobucket.com/albums/af358/Mantis_War_1/SDC11659.jpg http://i1023.photobucket.com/albums/af358/Mantis_War_1/SDC11660.jpg http://i1023.photobucket.com/albums/af358/Mantis_War_1/SDC11662.jpg Looks like this marine will be a Sgt or Captain, i've added a small armour flap over the groin area (just as an example for now). The power sword is suposed to look like a katana but appear more like a rapier type blade atm :P Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/200919-true-scale-mantis-warriors/#findComment-2393792 Share on other sites
ephrael
That is a fantastic example of true scale you have. I would like to know what you used for the chest piece. It looks like a terminator bit blended in to a power armor back. Am I correct? Keep posting pics and keep sculpting, you have a knack for it. RogueTrooper
I took a size comparison pic as it is the main reason for me trying to upscale marines. Having bulky marines makes them look like the titans they are IMO. - http://i1023.photobucket.com/albums/af358/Mantis_War_1/SDC11663.jpg mikhail - Yeah, i thought thats how it was done. Ilined up the collar areas on the torso parts, glued them and then fillied in with GS. For the sword, you should bare in mind that iam using what i have to hand atm. If this guy turns out well then i will invest in some kits. :D I dont think it looks xeno but maybe a little thin, then again it could just be an elegant weapon. Thanks for the input. WingsOfTheFalcon
Normally I don't like TS models as they just look like badly trimmed terminators, this however is a really great effort. Can't wait to see it finished. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/200919-true-scale-mantis-warriors/#findComment-2394619 Share on other sites
RogueTrooper
I guess i know what you mean, i get that when looking at this miniature sometimes. Maybe its just the recognition of what parts have been used? More pics, i've chunked out the legs and am waiting for the green to set before trying to smooth out. http://i1023.photobucket.com/albums/af358/Mantis_War_1/rd1.jpg http://i1023.photobucket.com/albums/af358/Mantis_War_1/rd3.jpg Here are some alternate heads - Captain http://i1023.photobucket.com/albums/af358/Mantis_War_1/rd4.jpg Sniper Squad Sgt http://i1023.photobucket.com/albums/af358/Mantis_War_1/rd2.jpg There could be a case for interchangable heads maybe? I plan to give him a Samurai styled back banner aswell. Let me know what you think Thanks Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/200919-true-scale-mantis-warriors/#findComment-2394687 Share on other sites
Bigger-than-Jesus
I'd say move the hilt so it's touching the top of his hand, that way the sword will look a lot more like a katana. RogueTrooper
I'll have a go at adjusting the sword. thanks will likely update with more pics at the weekend. nurgling6688
i like it a lot. i would stick with a helmeted head as it makes him look more massive and Bad A*%. One thing though, please clean up the huge mold line on his plasma gun, its bringing down an otherwise awesome model. Jellitin
I'm going to second everything nurgling just said. :D Also I have to say having him hold the sword closer to the edge of the grip. That's how a samurai holds it. At least in Rurouni Kenshin... Not the American version though. The manga, where they use the pictures drawn by the author. It's also how one is supposed to hold a katana. Kind of rambling now... RogueTrooper
I'm going to keep it as in the original pics with a few changes. I thought of trying to change the laurels on the chest emblem into mandibles (sp?) might be worth a try atleast. :P thanks guys. RogueTrooper
i should say that plasma pistol is there as an example of weapon choices, of course i will clear mould lines from all components. RogueTrooper
Another update, i think i'm close to calling it a day with the converting stage here. I can only think of filling in the gaps of the arm pits once the arms are attached. Perhaps i could add details to the back of the legs to make them look more power armour than termie. Things done since last - Cleaned up and smoothed the GS work abit. Found a back banner. (needs torn up abit i think) Adjusted the sword. Added Mantidae blades to the fore arms (tell me what you think.) Made new armour flap for groin area. Removed mould lines from the plasma pistol :) Pics - http://i1023.photobucket.com/albums/af358/Mantis_War_1/mw2.jpg http://i1023.photobucket.com/albums/af358/Mantis_War_1/mw4.jpg http://i1023.photobucket.com/albums/af358/Mantis_War_1/mw3.jpg http://i1023.photobucket.com/albums/af358/Mantis_War_1/mw1.jpg Now for the big clean up. Cant wait to start painting, I think i'll go for the green/yellow look that seems quite common with MW's but thats something to consider. Anything i've missed, let me know. Cheers. :D Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/200919-true-scale-mantis-warriors/#findComment-2398530 Share on other sites
Brother Masariel
I like it.. I think there's some helmet more suitable for a samurai look.. at least for a seargent.. http://www.elvenforge.com/images/helm_PC-2082.jpg think about those chaos one with the mouth open..maybe the best would be berzerkers from FW.. RogueTrooper
I have thought about the Samurai theme alot, though i did say it would be subtle. To me he is a space marine first and adding extras is a bonus. Lost track of the armies i've seen that go over board with themed miniatures - space wolves for example. For the helmet i think that if you look at it, the cables around the breath grill actually look like pincers/mandibles. Dont know if its just me though haha. Brother Masariel
twice right mate! they must be space marines..and that mandible recall helmet is a very good detail to achieve that target.. I've just been thinkin about veterans or seargents for a more evident twist of samurai aesthetic.. Let us see more please.. <3 Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/200919-true-scale-mantis-warriors/#findComment-2399926 Share on other sites

RogueTrooper
Well thanks guys, i understand what you mean about getting the theme right, and when making characters in future i'll be looking to go the extra mile. as for this guy, i think he has shaped up well. The only thing that i'm not sure about now are the sabatons (boots) which still look termie. I may work on that before i start painting which i plan to start tonight at some point - still feeling rough from last nite though lol. cheers for the support!
