Heavy Armor..

RIGHT-Titan

Recommended Posts

Soo.. I'm looking over my list.. and I'm planning on taking it to tourny soon (an 1850 singles and 1000 each doubles) and looking over my options.

I'm not a fan of Dev squads.. and I'm torn between using the 3 Vindicators I own, or buying Predators lol.

I love my templates.. but 24" range is sometimes a little harsh on me, and I'd love to be able to use that 48" lascannon range.

What are other people's thoughts on the big tanks out there?

I would say that the best overall choice for SM army is the Combi-Predator.

Autocannon/Lascannons for 120 points each. Provides 4 shots @ 48" that will knock out most light/medium armor/transports/walkers and put wounds on MCs.

The only thing it can't do well is horde (which SM can handle pretty well with Bolters and Flamers) and AV14 (MM Land Speeders work well for that).

Why not mix. 2 Vindicators with a combi-pred. The 2 vindi's can forge ahead of with the rest of your army(if thats how you play) while the Pred takes up a stable firing position and takes out targets at range. Best of both worlds.

As for best position of Chronus. Honestly i wouldnt take him. If you have 70 points spare to use him thats a Multi-Melta Attack Bike plus 20 points spare. Or depending on your point availability for an extra 35 you get a dread plus MM. Having one of those walk up with your Vindi's......

Combi-Predator with Chronus

You used this? Would you say it's worth the 190 pts?

To me, it just feels like a better idea to dish out another 50 points and buy two combipreds, rather then spend points on chronus.

BS5 and immunity to Shaken and Stunned is great. I use it a lot. Opponents frequently don't even both targeting it unless they have Melta in range, as glances are no longer a worry really. Guard its flank with a Rhino (or Razorback) and otherwise just turn it on the spot.

Even most Melta doesn't go for my Predator when it has Vindicators to deal with.

A Predator is always good value for points. I favour an all round variant, twin Lascannon turret and heavy bolter sponsons. Little less dedicated at taking on enemy armour but still packs an accurate punch against tanks at range, plus is a dab hand at hurting infantry with 6 heavy bolter shots.

If you have 2 Vindicators then a Combi-Predator would go well though. The Vindicators have sufficient anti-infantry capacity and you can do with the extra 2 Lascannons at range.

Would you consider Landspeeders in addition to your heavy armour? They are lower in AV, but they will suck enemy anti-armour as much as anything else. Also, they are cheap and great force multipliers. Consider an army with 2 Vindicators, a Combi-Predator (or Lascannon/Heavy Bolters variant) and also 2 Typhoons deployed across the table that you will soon have to run the gauntlet of their guns!

I personally don't like Chronus, if he was 20pts cheaper then maybe he would be a good choice, but like people have said already 70pts gets you a whole lot extra in a list. If it works for you thade then it is all good, my luck just screams to me that it would die first shot of the game!

i hear an echo

anyhoo i agre that combi-pred is the way to go, not a big fan of tanks myself, but numbers of shots often counts

You're more of a Scouts guy right GC? So I'm guessing you field Speeders?

I'm thinking of maybe rolling 2 Vindis and Pred of some variation.

I'm not a huge speeder fan personally.. they seem to die on me too fast lol..But I'm always willing to try other stuff.

Try a pair of Typhoons, trust me if you use them correctly you will not be disappointed!

Just try to keep at least 24" distance and the Typhoon will be safe.

Remember you can move 6" and fire the vindi's cannon, 12" if your BA.

Seriosuly GW, why?

Anyway, landspeeders work well in conjunction with vindicators as the vindicators tend to draw a lot of that long range anti-tank stuff that would normally be going after the speeders. If you keep the distance open you shouldn't even be taking any small arms fire. My speeders got a lot more resilient once I added pair of vindicators to the army. People just aren't prepared to ignore charging vindicators to go shoot at some typhoons lurking along the back of the board.

The overall metagame with experienced playes seems to be to rapidly close the distance, so long-distance firepower is not as critical as it once was.

2 vindies plus a third unit as your heavy armor is a good choice. The combipred is definitely the favorite. Too bad you cannot get a tri-melta pred...

I disagree. The fact everyone want's to close the distance so fast means long range firepower becomes more important. After all, if you interfere with their plan to close the distance then you have the upper hand.

I have witnessed and been on the receiving end of a player with long range superiority and it becomes a chore trying to weather that firepower each turn until you can retaliate.

FA is where C:SM anti-tank is at. Specifically, MM attack bikes.

Yeah. Like in the fake BA 'dex. Would have been nice...
