So I've decided to have Kill-Teams, Combat Patrols or full blown armies based off successors of each of the 9 original Loyalist Legions. First up appropriately is the the 1st Legion. I present the beginnings of my Dark Angels Kill Team.

The whole crew

Firing poses. It feels like these guys were told "Cover me!"

Ok these were the guys who said "Cover me!"

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v120/trex238/DarkAngels03.jpg
These guys have a sentry feel to them

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v120/trex238/DarkAngels05.jpg
OVERKILL! Seriously, with the new Kill Team Rules they are complete overkill.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v120/trex238/BloodAngels01.jpg
Ok this guy isn't a Dark Angel. He's a representation of 2 storm bolters on a Blood Angels Rhino. I originally was going to base a Pedro Kantor conversion on this but scrapped the idea. I wanted to do it so much though so when I needed 2 storm bolters I couldn't resist.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v120/trex238/BloodAngels02.jpg
I like to think he's yelling "Surprise! Eat explosive death!"

Ok these guys are unfortunately sidelined for now as the white primer I used was "fuzzy" so until I get some simple green they're on the bench. Oh well. On to the White Scars!

I think these guys are brill!!!

I can only think of one thing to make them better (other than paint!): Give the Tank guy belt feeds, it would make him look so awesome!!!! He could then be shouting "Surprise! Eat continuous explosive death! I never need to reload! Muwhahahahahahaha!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1"

He has McBain feeling to boot...

Hehe, your goggles, they'll do nothing!

Ok, while that's an awesome idea I haven't the slightest clue how to make ammo belts.

The rhino guy looks hilarious, gives me an idea for my next rhino.

Also, did you use a chaos space marine head for the sergeant? Nice little conversion there.

Yeah its the terminator lord with horns replaced with wings.

Alright White Scars are the Imperium's Speed Freak & few things say speed like Land Speeders!

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v120/trex238/WhiteScars01.jpg

Meet Steve. Steve loves 2 things. Speed & fire.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v120/trex238/WhiteScars02.jpg

So Steve bolted a heavy flamer to the bottom of his Storm. Time to bring the heat.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v120/trex238/WhiteScars03.jpg

Haha... wait. What's that in the background?

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v120/trex238/WhiteScars05.jpg

Tempest! The answer to all of your combat patrol's problems.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v120/trex238/WhiteScars04.jpg

Six-barreled rotary cannon capable of solving 6,000 problems per minute. I love assault cannons.

As you can see I've still got some decisions to make on the Tempest. I haven't decided whether or not to add the antennae to the wings. Looks nicer but I hate how easily they break. Also I love the engine detail in the hatch but I like the look with it closed. I'll have to decide later. Where's my Space Wolf?

I love the models almost as much as I love your RA2 references, you're making me nostalgic!

you got a marine Duel Wielding Storm Bolters and you think the Plasma Gun and Cannon are overkill?! that's kinda like being executed by firing squad, then followed up with a 105 Sabot rounds, then followed up by artillery fire and then just for good measure a little saturation bombing and saying the Saturation bombing wasn't really needed.

It may not have been needed... but it's still great to see happen. I like the Duel wielding marine though.

I'm a huge C&C fan. I don't have access to a good PC yet so I haven't tried the 4th Tiberian game but I've got high hopes. Hmm, I wonder if I can run RA2 on this one...

Hey I LIKE overkill. If it takes the wrath of the sun to knock some sense into the Fallen so be it :) Also if you like guns akimbo then what else I'm working on might interest you too. Need to finish them first though.

Alrighty on to the Space Wolves.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v120/trex238/SpaceWolf06.jpg

I know what you're thinking. "Did he fire six shots or only five?" Well, to tell you the truth, in all this excitement I kind of lost track myself. But being as this is a Mk.3 Sunwolf's Fang, the most powerful handgun on Fernis, and would blow your head clean off, you've got to ask yourself one question: "Do I feel lucky?" Well, do ya, pup?

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v120/trex238/SpaceWolf01.jpg

This is my Lone Wolf. If I end up doing an actual army he'll be upgraded to a Wolf Guard Battle leader.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v120/trex238/SpaceWolf03.jpg

Its hard to tell but there's a plastic gem on the backpack. I like the look of it so I think I'll put a drop of Elmer's glue on it before I prime. I wanted to cut off the candles but plastic glue melted the heads a bit. If the candles didn't mask that they'd be gone. Guess that's what I get for using an old back.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v120/trex238/SpaceWolf07.jpg

For Russ! This is going to be my reference pic for painting.

I don't kno if it is or not, but your primer looks really grainy, especially on the storm bolteroverkill marine. Either way, I am yet to play any kill team, so in that area I know even less than everything else, but for one hing u have great poses on your marines, that fro sure

They are indeed grainy as my primer wasn't shaken up enough. I'm planning to simple green them later & reprime before painting.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

And now for the Imperial Fists... This guy was originally supposed to be a walking Marine with one fist pointing & the finger was a grenade launcher but someone suggested he fly instead & the clenched fists worked a lot better than a pointing one. Oh & I was trying to figure out how to make a banner with enough room to write "My fists never run out of ammo!"

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v120/trex238/Punchtime2.jpg

The base is neither intended for him nor is he got a hole drilled for it. I just thought he looked cooler flying & didn't have a small one handy at the time.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v120/trex238/Punchtime1.jpg

Falcon PUUUUUNCH! I'm really proud how well he turned out as this was an at a whim conversion.

And cause I couldn't resist...

He was really easy to make. The hardest part was just waiting for the glue to dry & it only took a few seconds of holding it in place. I'm actually working on some other conversions that involve wings & was thinking of doing a conversion guide on making 3 different winged back packs.

  • 2 weeks later...

I think its time for some painted pics or at least some with some paint on them but first an unfinished model and some background.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v120/trex238/Ultramarines01.jpg

This was formerly my Blood Angels Captain but back then he was very different. Back with the WD BA dex you could arm your Captains with a plasma pistol, storm bolter, meltabombs and a pair of lightning claws. Unfortunately for him I ran Chaplains as HQ so he got sidelined until he got demoted to being Sgt Strabo of the 2nd Company of Ultramarines. He still has glue on his left claw but other than that he's pretty much set for his new role. Just needs one more shoulder pad. Oh & some cabling for the right claw.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v120/trex238/Ultramarines02.jpg

The whole squad. As you can see by "painted" I mean primed & base coated. These were older models I had when I started the hobby. As such I keep finding a ton of mold lines. I may end up redoing the paint after scouring all traces of the lines.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v120/trex238/Ultramarines03.jpg

Brothers Markus & Dominus show off their Calth Pattern flamers. The sleaker "carbine" design is better suited for use in highly mobile assault squads but still doesn't allow a battle-brother to use the weapon in the chaotic melee of close combat.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v120/trex238/Ultramarines04.jpg

A close up of Sgt. Strabo with different light. Since he has a bolt pistol still I may end up putting it over the left claw to hide the glue still present.

So time for some actual painting. These were test models for the scheme I wanted. I did these guys last night & as they are the first minis I've actually painted in a year (the Smurfs don't count as it was just thin paint slathered on) I found my skills had ATROPHIED. I started to get better as I got closer to finishing but I was not happy with a lot of it & there's still stuff that jumps at me but I can take comfort in they're at least TT quality. Hopefully the later guys will be much improved. This marks the first time I've used transfers. The first & third ones tore but hopefully they'll be easier with time. Also this is the first time I've used the new GW washes. I don't know if its the fact I haven't painted in so long or the washes themselves but I'm still not sure what to make of them. Eh, time will tell. Sooner or later, time will tell. So without further ado, back to the Fists!

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v120/trex238/ImperialFist01.jpg

Here we have 2 Imperial Fists. Remember camouflage is the color of cowards ;)

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v120/trex238/ImperialFist02.jpg

Ok so 12 paces then turn & fire. Brother Janus lost when Brother Faust dropped his launcher & quick drew his pistol.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v120/trex238/ImperialFist03.jpg

Fire down range! On a second glance I should've gotten the missile rack in the pic. A fair amount of time went into it.

  • 7 months later...

Well after some time away from 40k I've finally got some time to work on my armies again. To show a hint of what I've got to share in the near future, a Flamestorm Baal Predator!

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v120/trex238/Baal1.jpg

Seems I forgot to drill holes for the heavy bolter... this explains the numerous weapon destroyed rolls.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v120/trex238/Baal2.jpg

You can see a line near the end of the turret by the fuel tanks. This is cause I had to saw off the lascannon batteries of a repurposed turret & I slipped up.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v120/trex238/Baal3.jpg

I love the flamestorm cannon but this is the only one I have in my list. Asscans are just too useful.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v120/trex238/Baal4.jpg

Definetly need more BA symbols for my entire tank force but otherwise I'm pretty happy with it.

This was actually quickly painted for a Heavy Support contest. I don't have much time to paint at home & I do most of it at my LGS while waiting for a game so I was kinda pressed for time to get it in before the deadline. Unfortunately when I got home I realized Baal Preds are Fast Attack. There was much facepalming at that point. Still I like it & even though it needs highlights it gives a standard on which to base the rest of my tanks.

One thing I wanna do when I'm done is go over this with old style inks to give it a glossy look. Reason is they're BA tanks which makes them fast vehicles & I really want them in race car red.

Well expect more from the First Founding chapters in the future! I have White Scars Scout, Ultramarine Devastator & Blood Angels Assault squads in the works.

Ooh, Scarface is definitely the better subtitle. That guy is my favorite tank hatch & I think I've got a good paint job on him. I'll post that after the squads from Ultramarines, Blood Angels & White Scars.

--

Devastator Squad Tirian. These guys were the ones that broke the parade look first. I wanted to have the entire army set like they were standing at attention. The Sicarius model looked especially static so I decided to pick up a bunch of AoBR & BfM minis & thus my SMurf army was put in the works. About half way through someone dared me to make Sicarius more like the book art & at that point I gave up on the theme & pointed the heads on heavy bolter marines in the proper direction. As for the rest, well can't do too much without decapitating them first & that's way too much effort for little payoff. As is they're the first fully painted squad in my 2nd company. They still need basing, transfers & the sarge needs eyes but they're good to go otherwise. Maybe toss in a wash later.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v120/trex238/Dev1.jpg

Devastator Squad Tirian stands for a photo op. I like to think of myself as a solid painter. I'm not good but I don't think I'm horrible either. I can get it at or beyond TT quality & that's good enough for me.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v120/trex238/Dev2.jpg

A somewhat closer shot of the squad. Hmm, seems Brother Cetus is having an argument with Brother Titus. Well like the title says, the best way to win an argument is to be the loudest. I'm sure heavy bolters are quite loud.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v120/trex238/Dev3.jpg

The Expendables! Be honest, that's how every player thinks of them.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v120/trex238/Dev4.jpg

I still don't know why this is the GW recommended combat squad loadout. I like to think this is what the guy in the middle thinks. Either that or how did he end up as squad leader.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v120/trex238/Dev5.jpg

The squad erasers. These guys are great! Unfortunately I missed a ton of mold lines on them.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v120/trex238/Dev6.jpg

Sargent Tirian directing the symphony of destruction. This guy is a prime example of why I hate helmetless Marines. Helmets on & all I have to do is put 2 drops on the lens (I'm very happy with how it came out in this squad), helmet off I have to give him eyes. Gah! I've got the whites of his eyes in place but I cannot get the pupils in. Well I'll get to that right before basing.

Alrighty. So for my White Scars Combat Patrol I've got 2 Speeders, a trio of bikes & SCOUTS. I got a can of paint from a friend saying it'll do better than the one I had so these guys were test subjects. Building them I wanted to equip them for a fight but not weigh them down as much as my Dark Angels. The DA are on foot while these guys have a transport which they can store additional equipment. Also as they are White Scars so they shouldn't carry too much or it slows them down. In the end they have a pouch on them already so I just added grenades.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v120/trex238/WhiteScars06.jpg

Here's the setup 2 blades, & 2 swords plus the Sarge.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v120/trex238/WhiteScars07.jpg

Sargent Ash. Armed with boomstick & power gauntlet. Groovy.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v120/trex238/DarkAngels07.jpg

In honor of the new FAQ, the return of my Dark Angels Kill-Team, now primed black. Unfortunately even with a week soaked in Simple Green some of the old, grainy paint remains but hopefully the new paint job in the future will mask that.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v120/trex238/DarkAngels08.jpg

I won't be using the DA codex as they were built using C:SM costs & go over when using C:DA. This also allows me to use them outside Kill-Team by simply adding them as an allied squad for a codex, BA or even Templar Marine army.

I'll be painting both squads over the weekend/whole week so should have some more shots of them soon. Next... Blood Angels!

Hmm, didn't think about the can distance. Thanks for the tip. Also the weapons do need a wash. They've been bad, really bad. Er I mean rolling wise. Its not like they've been doing wrong things. My Sisters of Battle handle those weapons all the time and there's no complaints... um moving along.

--

Alrighty then. Blood Angels time. I've been working on these guys for a while & they're still not finished because I had the brilliant idea of using Death Company models & using them as RAS Marines. Seemed like a good idea at the time & they do look good. It wasn't until I started painting that I realized the huge level of detail needed paint too. Cue facepalm. Oh well. I do like how they are progressing & they're not too far from what the final product will be.

You might wonder why I have blue helmets instead of yellow. Well I play 9th Company & the guys that get heavy weapons drive the Predators & Vindicators (hey if RAS get bikes & speeders it only seems fair). Also if you're wondering why the guys without guns get swords instead of bolters, they're Blood Angels. They're not going to turn down a sword. A boltgun doesn't have the range of a sword. Wait...

Anyways there are 3 squads:

Green Squad. They're mean.

Orange Squad. Yeah, I need to put another coat on the base.

Purple Squad. When picking colors, they lost the game of Rock-Paper-Scissors-Lizard-Spock.

Oh & the background is from the old WD Blood Angels PDF codex. Oh those were dark days.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v120/trex238/BloodAngels03.jpg

Left Marine: I'll go this way.

Right Marine: I'll go that way.

Middle Marine: And I'll stay here. Bring me back something.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v120/trex238/BloodAngels04.jpg

LM: Dude what the hell?

RM: Yeah you almost hit us.

MM: Oh shut up & charge!

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v120/trex238/BloodAngels05.jpg

When I built these guys I ran out of plastic shoulder pads. The left & middle guy are missing theirs. I eventually got some metal ones & just need to remember to prime them. I love how varied the chainsword poses are. So much better than the rather static regular arms & so much freedom.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v120/trex238/BloodAngels06.jpg

Ah, special weapons. I swear these are the only guys in my army with BS2.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v120/trex238/BloodAngels07.jpg

Sarges. One thing I like about taking pics is I notice things I don't normally. Like how the hell did I miss that skull on the shin of the Marine on the right?

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v120/trex238/BloodAngels11.jpg

"The Company that fights together, wins together"

"But mainly loses together"

"Shut it Cooper"

Like I said far from finished. For example I thought I was done with the helmets... Well that was wrong. I'll revisit these guys when I'm done. Probably along with their rides.
