Volgon's Tabletop Workshop

Hey folks, this is my first WiP thread. I've lurked this board for ages but only yesterday began painting (I've done lots of converting though). I'm hoping you guys can give me some C&C to help me improve my technique. Anyway here they are:

First I've got my Night Lords captain.

I really love the Raptor champion lightning claws, I just had to have them for this guy. Took me a good 15 minutes to get the left arm off the champ's body! But I think it was worth the effort.

Second I've got what I like to call a death knight. I really tried to make him very "martial" looking. The character concept is that of a D&D style death knight, aka honorbound, a duelist and proficient with big weapons! He's really my pride and joy because he exemplifies everything I think is really cool.

I mostly like the way the skull came out, it looks very dirty and battered which is what I was going for but something about it seems off and I can't put my finger on it. Ignore the skull on the knee, I was testing paint consistently there and will fix it as soon as I get back to him. I really like the color scheme so far but I'm not sure where else to incorporate the blue, possible on his arm armor and leave the greaves black.

C&C is appreciated and thanks!

I like the conversion work on them and the paint looks smooth and crisp. I think the blue would look good either on the upper arms or the shoulders, but I'll be the first to admit that I'm not one to go to for advice for color matching/coordinating.

As for the skull... it looks great paint wise, but yeah.. there does seem to be something 'off' on it.

Maybe it's because the jawbone isn't painted yet?

To me, it seems like it ends prematurely, so after the lower jaw portion is painted it'll look better maybe.

And welcome to the posting portion of the B&C populace!

It's actually not a jaw at all, it's a greenstuffed "neck" I suppose you could say. I agree the skull might sit a little high and expose it too much but it seems the paint looks off. Maybe it's just me :P

Hello again folks, back with some updates. First I've continued painting my death knight:

The paint on the chest looks a little thick to me, does anyone else agree?

Also I have a WiP conversion for a World Eaters captain. Really, really dig this guy's pose and it was influenced by Dezertfox's Kharne conversion.

C&C appreciated :)

That's really all I have so far. I think I'm going to go with a pointing plasma pistol arm for his other but don't currently have one but I'll be sure to put up some pics when I do.

EDIT: It's really been nagging me but my WiP painted mini seems to be missing...something. The chestpiece just looks really off to me. I'm thinking I need to go a different route color-wise, the mini feels a bit saturated with blue. Does anyone else feel this way? I was thinking going with a white or black chestpiece instead of blue and hit the shoulderpad rims with white as well. Perhaps once I add paint to the chest tubing and rivets it'll look fine. Any thoughts?

your death knight is really looking like a space age duelist. But his head needs something, maybe tubing down the sides up to the ear port. It looks to small for him to challenge other ic's out there. For you question about chest piece id put a ring of skull even thou he's not a khoneate looking model, he would still proudly wear the slain about his neck for shock and awe. ie, just like the night lords would have intended.

Yeah I was considering adding skulls somewhere to spice it up a little bit. As for the head, I actually like the size. The model itself is truescaled using Doghouse's Gothic method and I think a smaller head makes him look a little bulkier which is what I was going for.
