I think this discussion is starting to head towards diversion and bad areas. Lets sum it up shall we?

Dark Apostle Thirst's character is might to be scary, really scary. How scary is immaterial, lets just focus on the rules for once. However scary he is, the last version of the rules were over-the-top and it needs to be massively toned down. Whilst we might say a massive alien beast may be scarier, it is this character's thing to be scary so it can have a special rule but it needs to be balanced. I still thinkg Fantasy Fear would work well.

Will do then. Will post updated rules in a minute.

This is for the Wraiths of Darkness, the Spectre of Death who terrorizes the enemy. Chaos Marine Codex.

Spectre of Death

Unit Comp. - 1 (unique).

Wargear - Artificer armour, Twisted Crozius, Dark Aquila

Artificer Armour - This is armour stolen from the greatest heros that have been killed by the Spectre of Death. This confers a 2+ armour save.

Twisted Crozius - Power Weapon that reduces the WS of an attacking squad/model by 1.

Perverted Aquila - A horrifying meld of the Imperial Aquila and the Star of Chaos, this forces any units wishing to charge the Spectre if Death to take a Leadership test.

Special Rules - Fearless, Feel no Pain, Independent Character, Gateway of Infinity (from Codex - Space Marines Librarian entry).

Again, looking for a point cost.

Feel no Pain and Gateway of Infinity are both having to do with his behind the scenes job of 1) being where he needs to be, when he needs to be, and 2) appearing to be beyond death when he's busy scaring people.

Lords of Shadow first character, for SM codex (not BA or SW).

The Forgiven

Stats - same as a Wolf Lord.

Wargear - Artificer Armour, Hands of the Forgiven

Hands of the Forgiven - By earning his place as Chapter Master, he has been forgiven of his father's sins without having died for it. The symbol of this is the Hands of the Forgiven, which count as Master Crafted Lightning Claws.

Special Rules - Orbital Bombardment, Emperor's Blessing, Forgiven, Master of Stealth

Emperor's Blessing - By earning his place as Chapter Master, the Forgiven has shown clear proof that the Emperor is protecting him. The Forgiven has a 4+ invulnerable save.

Forgiven - Having been Forgiven in life, not death, the Forgiven is an inspiration to all Lords of Shadow, a symbol of what they could be in life and what they will be in death. All friendly units within 12 inches of the Forgiven are Fearless.

Toned him down a bit.

Mage-Smith Preyen

Armorer, Smith, and Keeper of Techno-Lore for the Reckoners 8th Company

A warrior, a sage, and an incessant tinkerer, Aybara Preyen embodies his chapters disregard for Imperial strictures and limitations. Though his inventions are innovative and undoubtedly effective, if word of his tech-heresy should ever reach the ears of Mars the Reckoners would find themselves facing more than just Inquisitorial suspicion for their already deviant practices. Nonetheless, the eccentric Mage-Smith continues to fill the armories of the chapter, especially 8th Companies, with weapons and armor of awe-inspiring artistry and destruction.

  • Infantry

  • 1 (Unique)

  • Artificer Armor

  • Bolt Pistol
  • Iron Halo
  • Frag, Krak and Melta Grenades
  • Limbless, Predator Pattern Chainblade Mk.1

  • And They Shall No Know Fear
  • Walking Arsenal
  • Combat Tactics

Special Rules:

And They Shall No Know Fear, Walking Arsenal, Combat Tactics

Walking Arsenal: Any close combat weapon in your army may be upgraded to a Predator Pattern Chainblade Mk.II at 5 points a weapon, bestowing the Rending special rule on their close combat attacks. Any Thunderhammer, Chainfist, or Powerfist in your army may be upgraded with Miniature Fusion Cells at 10 points a weapon, enabling them to strike at Initiative 2.

Wargear:

Limbless, Predator Pattern Chainblade Mk.1: The prototype for the widely utilized Mk.II chainblades, Limbless is Preyen's pride and joy. Having tinkered with his prized invention for close on two centuries it no longer resembles the Predator Pattern Chainblade so much as it does a vaguely sword shaped creation of screaming teeth and smoke. Limbless grants Mage-Smith Preyen +1 Strength, has the Rending special rule and is a power weapon.

Wait...I'm confused. I wanted Kronos to be a normal Company Master with a better power weapon as my Chapter's 3rd Company are the highest non-1st company in terms of rank. I didn't want to make him better than belial or sammael but still a better captain. What do I change to reflect this?
Shambling Horde: Purah is surrounded by a shambling horde of the undead who respond to his every will. Armed with a variety of crude weapons they've managed to keep their dying hands clasped around. Count as Auxiliary Grenade Launcher, Defensive Grenades, Digital Weapons and Artificer Armour.

Flail of the Keeper: Like all Wings of Death brothers, Purah is a master of the weapon he has decided to devote his life to; his flail. The Flail of the Keeper counts as a Power Weapon that for each model removed due to its last wound being cause by the flail, Purah may make one more attack that also is subject to this rule.

My suggestion would be, give Purah the Digitial Weapons, Artificer Armor, Auxiliary Grenade Launcher and Defensive Grenades as standard.

My own version of Purah would look like this:

Flail of the Keeper:

Like all Wings of death brothers, Purah is a master of the weapon he has decided to devote his life to; his flail. The Flail of the Keeper counts as a Power Weapon. Any attack from the Flail of the Keeper that would remove a model from play spawns a wretched shambling undead servant,

Shambling Horde:

Whenever Purah slays a model with his flail put a zombie into play, there are no limits to how many zombies Purah can spawn. They join any squad that Purah is already a member of. If Purah is not in a squad then they form a retinue for him.

Zombies use plague zombie rules.

Poorly worded rules but something like that.

I was considering having additional models used for the zombies, but I was thinking along these lines.

No other character in the SM codex does anything that massive to the army

It would throw in a massive amount of complications with transports etc.

It would require a stat line for the zombies (nothing akin to them in the SM codex)

It gets quite complicated in the movement of them.

It would make him very expensive.

I thought my current rules removed all the idea of additional models, making it simple. Plus, the flail doesn't do the raising it is Purah ;)

More sensible than the previous submissions, but I have a feeling that this time the character was over-priced. The only Force Organization change he does, after all, is make Deathwing a Troops choice (which Belial does too). I assume he keeps his Iron Halo?

He cant have an iron halo, he is in TDA. But if can any C&C that might be helpfull is always welcome.

Thanks

Master Gabriel

Well to be fair you would probably only ever manage to raise a maximum of twenty zombies in a game which aren't all that effective if you used Plague Zombie (or even Guardsmen) rules. Agreed on complications in transport and movement though.

@ DAT: Your Forgiven looks fine. Other then the somewhat presumptuous wording nothing seems all that troublesome. I can't comment on the cost of such a unit though. I don't see much in the way of special rules that are going to cause problems. Fearlessness isn't much of a strength in my eyes though...

People are largely going to be looking for problems not simply giving out good jobs. The Liber isn't the PCA, we're more about problem identification and correction, not praise of already acceptable idea's.

We do however sometimes gloss over posts though...

So, no comments on my characters? I do want to make them viable but fair.

For the fear thing, why not use the old Daemonic Visage rule? Seems to fit your guy fine.

I don't know what the Daemonic Visage rule is, care to explain it?

Melta Bombs

The Mauler

Scalar Field

Special Rules:

Combat Tactics

Independent Character

Bolster Defences

Blessing of the Omnissiah

Nikoli’s Cannon:

This heavily modified Conversion Beamer is Nikoli’s pride and joy. He has spent the last 75 years perfecting the weapon. He rarely goes to battle without his custom weapon ever eager to test his most recent modifications. Nikoli’s Cannon fires with the following profile.

Range Strength AP Type

Up to 36” 8 4 Heavy 1 D3+1 Hits.

36” to 72” 10 1 Heavy 1 D6+1 Hits

The Mauler:

Nikoli’s personal power is believed to have been crafted by Ferrus Mannus himself. The axe is a relic of the chapter and Nikoli wields it with deadly skill cleaving the enemies of the Imperium apart. The mauler is a master crafted Relic blade that allows it’s wielder to re roll 1 failed to wound roll per close combat phase.

Scalar Field:

This small extremely potent device is fired from a wrist launcher in Nikoli’s armor. Upon landing the disc like projectiles emit a Scalar Field that nearly instantaneously vaporizes everything within its perimeter. It fires with the following profile.

Range Strength AP Type

Unlimited 10 1 Ordnance 1

Barrage

Basically what I have going on here is a MotF and Chapter Master hybrid. A few tweaks and re-names to already existing rules (Scalar Field = Orbital Bombardment). Points wise I think I will charge around 200, I want to play test him once or twice to see how he holds up. I may create a special honor guard as well, depending on if time permits and I feel like it is needed/beneficial.

So, no comments on my characters? I do want to make them viable but fair.

I don't know how powerful that would make him if I added it instead of exchanging it for the current rule. It would be -2, simply because this guy's whole purpose is to scare the dying saints of them. As explained.

Hmmm... Still looking for current point cost though.

  • 3 weeks later...

Ok, character no. 2 for thoughts and suggestions. Some actual rules changes here!

Brother Degier 110pts

http://i225.photobucket.com/albums/dd11/simoncherylm/Iron%20Gods/Degier1.jpg

In Brother Degier's former Chapter, few things were as hated as the uncanny powers of the psyker and the witch. Degier's self-imposed exile led him across dozens of worlds, vilified by frightened Imperial citizens and pursued by fanatical witch hunters. Talek Varn found Degier in a slum tavern deep in one of the Hives of Armis, attempting to overcome his enhanced constitution with massive amounts of the local rotgut. The Iron Gods leader spoke to the troubled psyker and helped him find peace within himself and with his strange new abilities, and gave him new equipment, a new home, and a new purpose in life. Though Degier has since had little or no formal training in his new role as Varn’s personal sorcerer, his inexperience is more than compensated for by his raw, unadulterated power.

Brother Degier

Degier5444242103+

Composition:

1 (Unique)

Unit type/Wargear/Special Rules:

Brother Degier counts-as a Rune Priest (see C:SW) equipped with a Chooser of the Slain (his servo skull)

Psychic Powers:

Degier has had little instruction in the use of his new abilities and is therefore limited to one psychic power, Living Lightning. However, while inexperienced, he is very powerful and therefore the Type profile of this power is changed from Assault D6 to Assault 3+D3.

Further due to his lack of training, Degier is less able to detect the changes in the warp created by the presence of another psyker. Therefore his ability to nullify an enemy psychic power is reduced from a 4+ to a 5+ on a D6.

N.B. So, mostly as per C:SW with a few little rules changes, trying to keep things fairly simple. I've left the pts value as equal to a regular RP with a CotS (110 pts) as hopefully the things I've changed are reasonably balanced? Also, it means if someone doesn't want to play using these rules I can just make him a normal RP without having to totally change whatever list I'm using!

Thoughts/suggestions would be very welcome!

Lysimachus

Here's four characters of the Oblivion Knights. I know I said I'd do three, but I felt like doing one more because I like you guys.

CAPTAIN ARATON....170 Points

Araton6544353103+

Fluff incoming

Wargear

  • Power Armour
  • M36 "Mentor" Combi-Plasma
  • Power weapon (scimitar)
  • Melta Bombs
  • Personal Icon

Special Rules:

  • Fearless
  • Independant Character
  • 5+ Invulnerable Save
  • Master of Darkness

M36 "Mentor" Combi-Plasma: This exquisitely well made combi-plasma was given to Araton after his actions during the Kapina Uprising. It is a master-crafted combi-plasma.

Master of Darkness: Araton has mastered the art of stealth and infiltration. He has the Infiltrate and Stealth USRs. In addition, if taken as the army HQ choice any unit not equipped with Terminator Armour or a jump pack may take either Infiltrate or Stealth for +4 points per model.

HIGH SORCEROR ZHURON.....185 points

Zhuron5544343103+

While it may seem that Kyton is the leader of the Oblivion Knights, this is not the truth. In reality, while Kyton may be the war leader of the chapter, Zhuron is the true leader of the Knights. Zhuron, formerly Kratios, is a shrewd, calculating man, more than happy to use others to achive his ends. This is especially true even on the battlefield, where he hides behind his blasphemous Marut and Zelekut and uses his sorcerous magicks to help his battle-brothers fight all the better. This is not to say that Zhuron cannot fight, for he is still a Space Marine, and will glady prove his prowess with his force sword in close combat.

Wargear

  • Plasma Pistol
  • Force weapon (sword)
  • Personal Icon

Special Rules:

  • Fearless
  • 4+ Invulnerable Save
  • Psyker

Psychic Powers:

  • Enchant Weapons
  • Scream of Rage

Enchant Weapons: Zhuron enchants his brothers bolts with baleful warp energies. Anyone hit by these enchanted bolts has little hope of survival. Only the strongest armor can stand against them.

This power is used during the shooting phase. Choose one unit within 12" of Kratios. This unit gains Inferno Bolts for the duration of the shooting phase. This counts as Zhuron's shooting attack for that shooting phase. Note that the effect only applies to bolters and bolt pistols. Special and heavy weapons are unaffected.

Scream of Rage:Zhuron reaches into the warp and infuses his battle-brothers with a fraction of the fury of the gods.

This power is used during the assault phase. Choose one unit within 12" of Krations. This unit gains the Counter Attack and Furious Charge USRs for the remainder of the assault phase. Zhuron cannot assault if this power is used.

CAPTAIN EVROS....185 Points

Evros6544354102+

Fluff incoming

Wargear

  • Terminator Armour
  • Combi-Melta
  • Bulawa
  • Personal Icon

Special Rules:

  • Fearless
  • Independant Character
  • 5+ Invulnerable Save
  • Master Bombardier

Bulawa: This mighty mace is not only Evros' symbol of office, but also a potent weapon. It strikes as a thunder hammer in close combat.

Master Bombardier: Evros prefers to pound his enemies into oblivion with heavy weapons, proving his dominance through overwhelming firepower.

As long as Evros is alive, once per turn you may re-roll the scatter die when firing an Ordinance weapon. In addition, one squad of Chaos Space Marines, Chosen , or Havocs may be given the Tank Hunters USR for +5 points per model.

DOOMBRINGER-SARGEANT RYNGOLD DICEROS ....points TBD

Ryngold5444353102+

Ryngold is one of the Doombringers, the elite cadre of veterans trained in the use of Tactical Dreadnaught Armour. He is one of the best warriors in this elite band, cutting down all in his path with Reaper autocannon and glowing power glaive in the name of his lord. Kyton considers him to be one of his most loyal warriors, and will often dispatch him to ensure his will is carried out. The Oblivion Knights have learned to fight all the harder when Ryngold is near, for it means their lord is watching.

Ryngold may be added to any Chaos Terminators squad in your army for the price given.

Wargear (this may or may not change)

  • Terminator Armour
  • Reaper Autocannon
  • Power weapon (glaive)
  • Personal Icon

Special Rules:

  • Fearless
  • 5+ Invulnerable Save
  • Lieutenant

Fluff incoming

Lieutenant: Ryngold is one of the best warriors in the elite Doombringers, and is often dispached by Kyton to ensure his will is carried out.

If Ryngold is taken, any squad within 12'' of him is Fearless

'scraps the Spectre'

Alright, alright, we have the Cryane! He leads the Third Summoning, and is well known among the Wraiths for his unexpected flank attacks. His rules are thus -

Stats - Chaos Lord's stats

Wargear - Power armour, power weapon, Mark of Tzeentch, plasma pistol

Special rules

Independent Character, 5++ (increased to a 4++ by Mark of Tzeentch), Flank Attack

Flank Attack - The controlling player may designate one Chaos Space Marine squad as Wraiths. They, and Crayne, are automaticcly kept in reserve, and have the Outflank special rule.

Not sure if it's called Flank March or the Outflank special rule (I don't play 40k myself). If someone could tell me that, and a good points cost, I would be appreciative.

Brother Degier 110pts

Hey I really like your character, well painted, well fluffed out and very well balanced. If anything I believe he could use a slight points decrease seeing as he has no access to any of the really beefy Rune Priest powers. For what its worth Brother Degier has the official Hasoroth Stamp of Approval

Thanks Hasoroth! Funny though, I'd always thought of LL as being one of the better RP powers, especially for Degier with a guaranteed minimum 4 shots a turn :D Still, glad you think it's balanced ok! On pts, perhaps it could do with a drop, but I always think homegrown SC's need to be over- rather than under- priced so opponents are willing to play against them, plus if I keep it the same as a regular RP with CotS, I can just switch it out without having to rearrange my whole list if playing someone that doesn't want to use my rules...

Must try to have a proper look at everyone else's characters, will try to this week sometime!

I've posted 4 characters of the Oblivion Knights for you guys to rip apart critique and comment on. My vow was for three, but I decided I like you guys and posted one more. That, and this is actually kinda fun.

Fluff for all four will come eventually.
